What happened in the first part

The 2021 Mortal Kombat film does not depict the actual deadly tournament between Earthrealm and Outworld, but only the preparatory events leading up to it. The main character, Cole Young, a former MMA fighter, was created specifically for this film and is not present in the games in the series.

The film's plot centers on the confrontation between two ninjas, Hanzo Hasashi and Bi Han, representing warring clans. At the beginning of the film, their past is revealed: assassins of the Lin Kuei clan brutally murder Hanzo's family, and then Bi Han himself takes Hanzo's life. As a result, Hanzo is sent to the Netherrealm and becomes known as Scorpion. This story is full of drama and revenge, which makes it attractive to fans of the genre.

The god of thunder Raiden and the champions of Earthrealm prepare for the tenth tournament with Outworld. All previous tournaments ended in defeat for Earthrealm. If Earthrealm fails in this tournament, Outworld will be able to invade and take over the planet. However, a prophecy holds that the blood of Hanzo Hasashi will be the key to winning the tournament and saving Earthrealm. As events unfold, it is revealed that Cole Young is the bearer of Hanzo's blood. This turn of events opens new possibilities in the struggle for the survival of Earth and its defenders. The sorcerer Shang Tsung, who serves Outworld and consumes souls, begins hunting Earth's champions, those marked by the mark of the dragon. This mark, it is later discovered, can be passed from victim to killer. Among those affected by this curse are Sonya Blade and Jax, who eventually join Raiden. Jax, according to the plot, will have his arms torn off, which adds drama to his story.

But don't worry, Jax will get cooler arms very soon. Still: Mortal Kombat movie (2021) / Warner Bros.

All heroes marked by the mark of the dragon possess hidden superpowers that must be unleashed. Cole gains his abilities after Prince Goro of Outworld attacks him and his family. Sony begins to understand his powers after killing the mercenary Kano, who has betrayed Earthrealm. Jax's superpowers manifest as a result of an attack by Shang Tsung's forces on the temple where Earth's champions are trained. In this conflict, Kung Lao and several other famous characters from the Mortal Kombat universe are killed.

As a result, Bi-Han, now calling himself Sub-Zero, wins the opportunity to fight Cole in a one-on-one duel. During the battle, Sub-Zero almost wins, but Cole summons Scorpion from the Netherrealm, who incinerates his longtime enemy.

Shang Tsung vows revenge, while Raiden intends to find and train new champions for the upcoming tournament. The story's conclusion strongly suggests that the first of these new fighters will be Hollywood actor Johnny Cage. This intrigue underscores the importance of choosing new heroes and their impact on the tournament's outcome.

The 2021 Mortal Kombat film earned over $84 million worldwide against a $55 million budget. It became one of the most-watched films on the Max streaming service, as it premiered simultaneously in theaters and online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is known about the sequel and what can be assumed

The sequel was directed by Simon McQuoid, who also worked on the first film. The screenplay was written by Jeremy Slater, known for creating the series "The Exorcist" and "Moon Knight." He also worked on the 2015 film "Fantastic Four" and the American adaptation of "Death Note." Actor Joe Taslim, known for his role as Bi-Han in the first Mortal Kombat film, confirmed in April 2021 that he had signed on to star in four more films in the franchise. This announcement comes in the context of a possible expansion of the Mortal Kombat cinematic universe from Warner Bros. Interestingly, despite the death of his character in the first film, Taslim returns in the Mortal Kombat 2 project. This raises questions about the development of the plot and possible twists in the new part.

The plot of the new Mortal Kombat film remains a secret for now, but it is known that the long-awaited tenth tournament awaits viewers. One of the creators of the game series, Ed Boon, noted that viewers will be able to keep score and follow the development of events, since the score will be visually displayed on the screen. Boon also promises many unexpected plot twists, which will add intrigue to the film. In addition, according to McQuoid, the creators of the film strive to increase the number of female characters, which will make the plot more diverse and interesting. The new film is expected to attract both fans of the game and a new audience, thanks to its dynamics and intriguing development of events.

The film provides a unique opportunity to explore many different worlds, which gives it a special visual style and variety. The creators recognized the need to be bolder and push boundaries to further explore the Mortal Kombat storyline. In this context, it is important not only to follow tradition but also to add new elements to make the story even more gripping and engaging for the audience.

Simon McQuoid is a renowned director who has established himself in the world of cinema. His work is distinguished by a unique style and a deep understanding of storytelling. McQuoid successfully combines elements of drama and comedy, creating memorable films that resonate with audiences. His work spans various genres, and he always strives to bring something new to his films. Simon McQuoid continues to inspire a younger generation of directors and remains a significant figure in the film industry.

The film's story is revealed not only through the work of its creators, but also through the casting and characters. This film places a significant emphasis on female characters: in addition to Sonya Blade, Kitana, Jade, and Sindel will appear on screen. Kitana will likely play a significant role in the plot, as the film features nearly all the key characters associated with her. Viewers will likely witness the fall of Edenia, the world conquered by Shao Kahn after winning ten tournaments. This aspect of the plot will add depth to the film and allow us to better understand the conflicts between the characters.

According to game canon, especially in the remastered version, Sindel's storyline unfolds after the tenth tournament. In this context, Shao Kahn exploits a loophole in the Elder Gods' rules to invade Earthrealm in order to resurrect his wife, Sindel. This turn of events adds depth to the story, highlighting the complex relationships between the characters and their motivations. Sindel, as a key character, plays a significant role in the plot's development, and her return has a significant impact on subsequent events.

The takeover of Edenia will likely be depicted in a flashback. Characters include the realm's king, Jerrod, along with Edenians and a young Kitana. This will showcase Shao Kahn's brutality and deepen Kitana's personal drama. Sindel's role remains uncertain, but the filmmakers may leave her alive, under Shao's control.

The new film will feature key characters, including the sorcerer Quan Chi and the deceased heroes of the first game, Kung Lao and Kano. According to video game canon, Quan Chi enters the story after the tenth tournament, as well as after Shao Kahn's attack on Earth to resurrect Sindel. The sorcerer is linked to the fallen god Shinnok, though his absence from the film's roster raises questions. Quan Chi has the ability to resurrect the dead, which will likely be used to transform Kung Lao and Kano into hellish revenants. Their return as revenants will be a real sensation and will shock all viewers, adding depth and tension to the plot.

Quan Chi may be connected to Bi-Han, known as Sub-Zero, who died in the first film. According to game canon, after his death, he became a revived shadow - Noob Saibot. Fans are confident that actor Joe Taslim will appear in this role in the second part; we remind you that he signed a contract to participate in three more Mortal Kombat parts, in addition to the second. This opens up possibilities for further plot development and character development in future films.

It should be noted that these are just speculations, as the filmmakers may not strictly adhere to the original source material. This is especially true considering that Mileena, who plays an important role in Kitana's storyline, was already killed in the first film.

Which characters will appear?

Johnny Cage. The eccentric action star who joins the Earthrealm fighters is played by Karl Urban (The Boys). Mortal Kombat series co-creator Ed Boon notes that Urban's performance creates a new take on the character. Cage will be a significant part of the film, and Johnny brings humor to the action. It's unlikely the filmmakers will miss an opportunity to show Cage punching someone in the crotch—the fighter's signature move is definitely something to look forward to. If it doesn’t exist, we will be upset.

  • Quan Chi. The cunning and dangerous sorcerer from the Netherrealm was played by Damon Herriman ("Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood," "The Fixer"). It is not yet clear what role the sorcerer will play in the plot: in the games, he worked for the fallen Elder God Shinnok, who is not stated in the film, and he appears after the tenth tournament. However, Kung Lao and Kano will return in the film, and they died in the plot of the first part. So, Quan Chi will probably bring them back as revenants.
  • Jerrod. The king of the world of Edenia, submitted to Shao Kahn, was played by Desmond Chime ("Bones"). It is unlikely that his role will be big: according to canon, Shao killed him, taking his family. We expect him to appear in a flashback.
  • Sindel. The Queen of Edenia is played by Ana Thu Nguyen (Suka). Canonically, after the fall of Edenia and the death of King Jerrod, Shao took her as his wife, but she could no longer live that way and committed suicide. Her story arc takes place after the tenth tournament, so Sindel's role in the events of the films is unclear.
  • Kitana. The Princess of Edenia, the daughter of Sindel and Jerrod, is played by Adeline Rudolph (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina). Apparently, she will have a significant role in the film. According to the canon of the games, she did not know for a long time what happened to Edenia and her parents, and when she found out, she turned against her adoptive father, Shao Kahn.

  • Jade. Kitana's childhood friend was played by Tati Gabrielle ("You," "The Last of Us"). In the games, she was sent to stop Kitana, who had turned against Shao Kahn, but she chose to stand by her friend.
  • Baraka. He was played by CJ Bloomfield ("Furiosa: The Mad Max Chronicles"). Baraka is a representative of the nomadic Tarkatan people, distinguished by their particular rage and huge fanged mouths. In the games, he was just, well... a monster. He will probably be the same in the film.
  • Shao Kahn. The Emperor of Outworld was played by Martin Ford ("Destined for Glory"). He will obviously be the film's main villain and the final boss (or one of them).
  • Cole Young. A former MMA fighter and the protagonist of the previous film, he was created specifically for the movie; such a character did not appear in the games. During the events of Mortal Kombat (2021), it is revealed that he is a descendant of Hanzo Hasashi, who became Scorpion after his death.
  • Scorpion. Ed Boon has said that Hanzo Hasashi will return in the second film "in a different capacity" and does not appear to be part of the Earthrealm team. What this means is unknown, but in the game canon, he has a grudge against Quan Chi, so perhaps he will confront him.

  • Sonya Blade and Jax. Two key characters from the first film will appear in the second.
  • Raiden. The God of Thunder, in charge of Earthrealm, will continue to guide Earth's champions.
  • Liu Kang. Having given way to the role of the main character in this story to newcomer Cole Young, Liu Kang, Raiden's protégé, will likely take part in the tenth tournament.
  • Kung Lao and Kano. Both of them died in the first film, but, as Ed Boon says, "there are ways to bring back dead characters." Considering that the plot includes the Netherrealm sorcerer Quan Chi, we can expect these heroes to return as revenants.
  • Shang Tsung. The trickster sorcerer and main villain of the first film will return in the second. It's safe to assume he'll be in the service of Emperor Shao Kahn, serving as Raiden's antagonist on the Outworld side. However, Quan Chi's appearance in the plot hints that things aren't quite so simple. In the games, they once had an alliance (a tenuous one, it must be said), thanks to which they even managed to kill Liu Kang. Perhaps something similar will happen in the film.
  • Bi Han. Joe Taslim is listed in the cast, which means Sub-Zero is returning. But he died in the first game, right? No problem, there's still the dark spirit Noob Saibot! It was into him that the dead Sub-Zero was transformed in the games thanks to Quan Chi's sorcery. We can expect this to happen in the movies too.
