In 1974, director Philip Kaufman, an acquaintance of George Lucas, was looking for a new project. Lucas was inspired by the idea of a charismatic and resourceful university professor named Indiana Smith, who, in his spare time from lecturing and conducting seminars, is engaged in treasure hunting.
Lucas did not know what artifact exactly would be Indiana's goal in the film, but Kaufman had the answer. He had recently heard the story of the lost Ark of the Covenant and came to the conclusion that this artifact was perfect as a MacGuffin. The friends began discussing ideas, but before the project was completed, Kaufman suddenly disappeared: Clint Eastwood had invited him to work on the western "Outlaw Josey Wales." Interestingly, Kaufman was never able to complete the film, as he had a heated argument with Eastwood on set. As a result, Clint, who was starring and producing, fired the conflicted director and took his place himself. Lucas immersed himself in the world of "Star Wars" and remembered Indiana Smith only after the premiere. At that moment, the director was vacationing in Hawaii, realizing that his film had become a box office hit. He was visited by Steven Spielberg, who was also recovering from filming "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." The friends spent time on the beach, building sandcastles and discussing the future. Lucas was preparing for a Star Wars sequel: his contract required him to begin work on the second film within two years of the first film's release. Spielberg dreamed of acquiring the rights to James Bond, to which Lucas responded that he had an idea for a character who might be even more interesting than 007. The idea for a film about Indiana Smith was inspired by classic adventure serials like Don Winslow of the Navy. The main character was conceived as a down-on-his-luck gold prospector, reminiscent of Humphrey Bogart's character in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Spielberg enthusiastically agreed to take over as director, but asked to change the main character's last name.

Both filmmakers first had to settle their current affairs, but George Lucas, in parallel with work on The Empire Strikes Back, began searching for a screenwriter for the Indiana Jones project. Steven Spielberg recommended the young copywriter Lawrence Kasdan. Although Kasdan had only recently begun his screenwriting career, he had already impressed Spielberg with his work on the comedy-drama Continental Divide. This stage became key in the development of the famous franchise, which won the hearts of audiences around the world.
George Lucas invited Kasdan to discuss the project, and after several days of intensive conversations, he began work, armed with a notebook of notes and a 23-page synopsis. Based on this material, the film Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) was created. This iconic film became a defining moment in the adventure genre and continues to captivate audiences with its gripping storyline and charismatic protagonist.
The story unfolds in 1936. Two U.S. military intelligence agents inform archaeology professor Indiana Jones that the Nazis are conducting a massive search for Abner Ravenwood, Indy's friend and mentor, whom he hasn't seen for ten years. Their breakup stemmed from Indy's heartbreak with Ravenwood, who is the father of the brash and charming Marion. Ravenwood is a renowned expert on the ancient Egyptian city of Tanis, recently excavated by the Nazis. Indy believes that Hitler's supporters are searching for a medallion belonging to Ravenwood. According to legend, this artifact is able to indicate the location of the Ark of the Covenant, a mythical object with enormous destructive power.

Indy goes to Nepal in search of his old mentor, Ravenwood, who has long been missing. Upon arrival in Nepal, Jones learns that Abner has already died. Marion, Indy's ex-girlfriend, wants nothing to do with him, but after her tavern, her only source of income, burns down in a skirmish with the Nazis, she is forced to team up with him.
Indiana Jones and Marion travel to Egypt to find the Ark of the Covenant. With the help of their old friend, archaeologist Sallah, they infiltrate the excavation site under Nazi control. However, the Nazis notice their presence, and the Ark falls into their hands. The Nazis decide to transport the artifact to a deserted island in the Mediterranean to test its supernatural properties before handing it over to the Führer. However, when the Ark opens, its powerful forces destroy all the Nazis. Ultimately, Indy and Marion hand the artifact over to American military intelligence, preventing its use for evil purposes.
The second installment of the Indiana Jones franchise was created during a difficult period for both George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. Lucas was suffering from a divorce, and Spielberg was reeling from a tragic accident on the set of The Twilight Zone that killed actor Vic Morrow and two children. Although Spielberg escaped legal consequences related to the incident, his usual cheerfulness disappeared. Consequently, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom turned out to be darker, more violent, and rich with dark humor. This atmosphere made the film unique and different from its predecessors, bringing new, deeper nuances to the adventure genre.
"Temple of Doom" (1984) takes viewers back to 1935, a year before the events of "The Ark." The protagonist, Indiana Jones, fleeing Chinese gangsters, along with new companions—singer Willie Scott and an 11-year-old boy nicknamed Shorty—finds himself in a devastated village in northern India. There, they discover that cultists worshiping the goddess Kali have attacked the village, kidnapping children and a sacred stone. Indiana Jones decides to retrieve both the stone and the children, setting out for the cultists' lair. After many dark and intense adventures, he manages to fulfill his promise, demonstrating his skill and courage. The film combines elements of adventure and mysticism, making it one of the most memorable works of its genre.

The synopsis for the third Indiana Jones film was completed by Lucas in September 1984, just a few months after the release of Temple of Doom. The eight-page document, titled "Indiana Jones and the Monkey King," featured the protagonist embarking on a quest for the Fountain of Youth, which ultimately turns out to be the Holy Grail. However, Spielberg disliked the idea. After several script revisions, the filmmakers reached a compromise: the quest for the Grail became a metaphor for Indy's relationship with his father, for which Sean Connery was brought in. As a result, the film's plot not only retained the adventure elements, but also deepened the theme of family ties, making it more multi-layered and appealing to audiences.

The action of the film "The Last Crusade" (1989) takes place in 1938. Indiana Jones receives an appeal from businessman Walter Donovan, who is interested in finding the Holy Grail. Although Indiana shows no interest in this legendary artifact, the situation changes when he learns that his father, Professor Henry Jones Sr., has disappeared while searching for the Grail. This prompts him to immediately set off for Vienna, where his father was last seen.
Indiana Jones, continuing his father's work, discovers that the Holy Grail is most likely located in the ancient city of Alexandretta, located on the territory of the independent state of Hatay. During his research, he also discovers that his father is being held captive by the Nazis at Brunwald Castle, located on the Austro-German border. After overcoming a number of dangers and adventures, Indiana successfully frees his father, and together they set off for Alexandretta. Joining them on their journey are their trusted friends, Sallah, a digger, and Marcus Brody, a university colleague. The search for the Holy Grail is thwarted by the Nazis, among whom are Donovan and his assistant, the charming German Elsa Schneider. The Nazis pursue the protagonists to the steps of the temple that leads to the Grail, forcing Indiana Jones to cooperate with them by threatening his father's life. However, the experienced archaeologist once again finds a way to deceive his enemies. As a result, Elsa, Donovan, and the Nazis are killed, and the Holy Grail is lost forever. Indiana finds reconciliation with his father, after which, together with Professor Jones Sr., Sallah and Marcus Brody, they ride off into the sunset, leaving behind unforgettable adventures and unsolved mysteries.

Ford and Spielberg actively resisted including the alien theme in the new film, but Lucas remained persistent. As a result, the first version of the script, titled Indiana Jones and the Flying Saucer from Mars, was written in 1994 and told the story of Dr. Jones's adventures related to the Roswell incident. However, after the release of Independence Day, Spielberg finally decided to exclude the alien theme from the project.
Several years later, Lucas, Spielberg, and Ford met at an American Film Institute gala and again discussed making a fourth Indiana Jones film. Lucas emphasized that he would not participate in the project unless the plot included aliens. He already had a concept for a new artifact – a crystal skull – that could become the central element of the story. This idea added intrigue and opened up new possibilities for plot development, attracting the attention of many fans of the franchise.
Work on the script for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull dragged on for several years and caused stress for several screenwriters. George Lucas, busy with the Star Wars prequels, nevertheless consistently rejected script versions proposed by Frank Darabont, Jeff Nathanson, and David Koepp. It was only in 2007, after the release of Revenge of the Sith, that production on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull began. This film was a long-awaited continuation of the famous archaeologist's adventures and generated great interest among both audiences and critics.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is set in 1957, at the height of the Cold War. A group of Soviet soldiers, led by the fanatical Irina Spalko, kidnap archaeologist Indiana Jones and his friend Mac. Their goal is to force Indiana to find the mummified remains of an alien discovered during the Roswell incident in Area 51. Indiana Jones manages to escape, surviving the destruction of a warehouse and a nuclear explosion, but the Russians make off with a vital find. The film combines elements of adventure and science fiction, highlighting the tensions of the Cold War and exploring themes of power and hidden knowledge.
FBI agents suspect Jones of communist ties, forcing the veteran of two world wars to leave the job he loved. The former teacher's feelings of worthlessness begin to dissipate thanks to a young man named Dog Williams. Dog turns to Indy for help, as a mutual friend has disappeared in the jungles of Peru.
In the mysterious jungles of Peru, Indy finds a mysterious crystal skull and meets the Russians again, reuniting with his longtime love, Marion, whom he hasn't seen for 20 years. During his adventures, the archaeologist learns that Dog is his son, and the Russians are pursuing the goal of returning the crystal skull to the sanctuary of the ancient city of Akator. According to legend, whoever performs this ritual will gain incredible power. This story immerses the reader in a world of ancient mysteries and treasures, emphasizing the importance of family ties and historical heritage.

This was likely Indy's final big-screen adventure. Wheel of Destiny underperformed at the box office, owing to its inflated production budget. Harrison Ford is already over 80, and he's unlikely to be dreaming of donning a fedora and wielding a whip again. Lucasfilm currently has no plans to recast the role, but time will tell what decisions studio executives make in the future. The possibility of updating the franchise or the appearance of a new hero in the world of Indiana Jones remains open.

Who's Who in Films
Indiana Jones, whose real name was Henry Walton Jones Jr., is an iconic character in the world of adventure cinema. He is not only an archaeologist, but also a doctor of science, a teacher, and a veteran of two world wars. Throughout his fascinating life, he experienced many thrilling adventures, exploring legendary artifacts such as the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenants. His quest also included mythical places such as Atlantis, as well as encounters with dinosaurs, Noah's Ark, and a unicorn's horn. Indiana Jones became a symbol of the pursuit of knowledge and adventure, inspiring generations of viewers to explore history and culture.
Marion Ravenwood is the daughter of Abner Ravenwood, Indiana Jones's close friend and mentor. She is not only his longtime love but also a key character in his life. Their relationship was complex and tangled: Indy twice abandoned Marion, disappearing for years at a time. However, on the threshold of old age, after learning he had a son with Marion, Indy finally decided to take responsibility and marry her. Their story reflects not only the romantic but also the dramatic aspects of relationships typical of the adventure genre, and emphasizes the importance of family in the life of Indiana Jones.

Salah Mohammed Faisel el-Qahir is one of Indiana Jones's closest and most devoted friends. This versatile and erudite individual primarily specializes in archaeological excavations. However, when the need arises, and such situations often occur in Indiana's adventures, he can also demonstrate his skills in martial arts. Sallah is not only a valuable researcher but also a reliable partner, ready to support a friend in any trials.
Marcus Brodie is a renowned British archaeologist, historian, and professor, serving as Dean of Marshall College. For many years, he taught students in the field of Indian studies. A distinguished theorist and expert in several languages, Marcus faces challenges leaving the university and is unprepared for fieldwork.
Henry Walton Jones Sr., Indiana Jones's father, is a professor of medieval literature and an expert on the history of the Holy Grail. He dedicated his life to researching this mythical artifact. After the tragic death of his wife, Henry became estranged from his son and immersed himself in scientific research. However, after the events of The Last Crusade, they managed to mend their relationship and find common ground, which became an important moment in their lives.
Henry Williams, known by the nickname Dog, also goes by the name Henry Jones III. He was the only son of Indiana and Marion. From childhood, he showed independence and stubbornness, qualities inherited from his father. Dog's stubbornness ultimately played a decisive role in his fate: after a conflict with his father, he decided to enlist in the army and tragically died during the Vietnam War.

Helena Shaw is Indy's goddaughter, inheriting from him and her father a love of exciting adventures and exploring unknown territories. Her passion for adventure manifests itself in a desire to uncover the secrets of ancient civilizations and search for artifacts that can change our understanding of the world. Helena is ready for any challenge and boldly steps towards the unknown, following in the footsteps of her famous godfather.
Willie Scott is an American singer and actress who became Indiana Jones's temporary love interest in the film Temple of Doom. Her character is characterized by capriciousness and eccentricity, which adds interest to the plot. Willie plays a key role in Indiana's adventures, helping him cope with dangers and overcome difficulties. Her musical numbers also infuse the film with vivid emotion, emphasizing the atmosphere of time and place. Willie Scott remains a memorable character, bringing a unique dynamic and romance to the story.
Shorty is a small Chinese street kid who becomes Indiana Jones's faithful sidekick in Temple of Doom. His image adds vivid colors to the adventurous atmosphere of the plot, emphasizing the spirit of friendship and loyalty. Shorty embodies courage and resourcefulness, which helps the protagonist overcome difficult trials on the path to finding ancient artifacts.
René Belloq is a French archaeologist and Indiana Jones's main rival. Unlike Indiana, he always put personal interests above public ones, which was demonstrated in his tendency to sell the artifacts he found at auction instead of donating them to museums. Belloq was no stranger to collaborating with the Nazis, assisting them in their search for the Ark of the Covenant. His life ended tragically during a field test of the capabilities of this ancient artifact.
What was in the series "The Chronicles of Young Indiana Jones"

In school, George Lucas showed little interest in studying. He found English, chemistry, and math classes boring, and he often dreamed of something more exciting. These dreams eventually led him to a career as a prominent director who changed the world of cinema.
Thirty years after becoming a single father of many children, Lucas looked back on his school days and thought about how to make the educational process more engaging for children. He founded his own educational foundation, and Lucasfilm, in collaboration with Apple, National Geographic, and the Smithsonian Institution, developed several innovative interactive learning programs for middle schools. However, George felt this wasn't enough: he sought to integrate storytelling into the educational process to make learning more engaging and effective. Lucas had always admired the prologue to The Last Crusade, in which River Phoenix played a young Indiana Jones. Inspired by this idea, the filmmaker developed a concept for a television series in which the young hero embarks on exciting journeys, witnesses or participates in significant historical events, and meets real-life figures who influenced the course of history. Each episode would include documentary and educational materials that would provide context for the events and introduce young viewers to the biographies of the historical figures featured in the series. This approach would not only captivate the audience, but would also contribute to the educational process, deepening the understanding of history in the younger generation.

The series covers two time periods: from 1908 to 1910 and from 1916 to 1920. In 1908, Professor Henry Jones Sr. receives an invitation to lecture at prestigious educational institutions around the world. This opens up the opportunity for him to travel around the world with his wife, son, and his teacher. Over the course of two years, the Joneses visited Egypt, France, Austria, Italy, Greece, Russia, and China, where they met such illustrious figures as Sigmund Freud, Theodore Roosevelt, Leo Tolstoy, and Lawrence of Arabia. The series not only explores the historical events of the time but also immerses viewers in an atmosphere of cultural exchange and personal encounters, making it engaging for all lovers of history and adventure.
The period from 1916 to 1920 was pivotal in Indy's life. In 1916, he was an ordinary high school student, but a spring break trip to Mexico with friends radically changed his destiny. First, Indy was kidnapped by guerrillas, after which he joined the Mexican Revolution. However, he soon became disillusioned with its ideals and decided to leave the country. A trip to Europe led him to join the Belgian army, where he used forged documents under the name Henri La Defense. This name symbolized his desire to defend the Entente countries from German aggression. These events not only shaped his personality but also determined his future path in the turbulent history of the early 20th century.
World War I radically changed Indiana, turning a naive youth into a seasoned veteran. Jones witnessed the horrors of the battles of the Somme and Verdun, survived captivity in Germany, and lost many friends and comrades. At some point, the command recognized the abilities of the young corporal, and Henri La Defense, previously a simple trench soldier, was appointed an intelligence officer and later became a spy. These events not only shaped his character but also determined his future destiny.
After the war, Indy returned to the United States. Seeking to adapt to civilian life, he first became interested in blues and cinema, and then discovered his passion for archeology. The final episodes of the series depict the conflict that arises between Indiana and his father shortly after Jones Jr. returns to his homeland. These events highlight the complex relationships between generations and show how personal trials shape Indy's character.

George Lucas envisioned the series as a deeper exploration of Indiana Jones's character and answering a number of key questions. The project would not only deepen our understanding of the protagonist's personality but also illuminate his motivations, past, and relationships. Viewers would learn about what motivated Indy throughout his adventures and how his experiences shaped his character. Thus, the series promised to be an important complement to the existing films, expanding the Indiana Jones universe and deepening its mythology.
- What made him become an archaeologist?
- How did he learn to rely so much on his own wits?
- When did he first fall in love, and with whom?
- Who taught Henry Jr. sensitivity and compassion?
The scenes with an older Indy take place in the modern world and open and close each episode. These moments follow a certain pattern: an event triggers memories of the past, and the 94-year-old man immerses himself in his adventures.
These scenes provided viewers with important information about the hero's fate. Indiana Jones lived to the age of 94, maintaining clarity of mind and health, with the exception of one missing eye, which he covered with a patch. Old Indiana Jones had a family: daughter Sophie, grandchildren Spike, Lucy, and Caroline, and great-grandchildren Annie and Harry. This version of the character's fate remained canon until the release of the film "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." For George Lucas, "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" became a true passion. He devoted approximately 50 hours a week to the series, sparing no time, effort, or expense. Each episode had a budget exceeding $1.5 million, a significant sum in the early 1990s. Many renowned filmmakers participated in the series' creation. The scripts were developed by such talented writers as future "Shawshank Redemption" director Frank Darabont and "Star Wars" star Carrie Fisher, who expressed interest in the script. Individual episodes were directed by renowned directors, including Terry Jones, Joe Johnston, Nicolas Roeg, and Mike Newell, who contributed significantly to the creation of unique and captivating content. The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles marked a milestone in television and film history, combining adventure, historical events, and vibrant characters. Filming for The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles began in 1991 and continued for three years, spanning numerous countries around the world. Led by producer Rick McCallum, the crew visited 100 cities in 20 countries, including Egypt, India, England, France, the Czech Republic, Spain, Ireland, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Russia, and China. The project employed over 50,000 extras, with approximately 1,500 people performing speaking roles. Many well-known actors, such as Christopher Lee, Ian McDiarmid, Max von Sydow, Daniel Craig and Catherine Zeta-Jones, made cameo appearances, adding to the project's appeal. This large-scale project became a significant event in the world of television and cinema, bringing together diverse cultures and talents.

The Chronicles set played a key role for George Lucas in preparing for the Star Wars prequel trilogy. While working on the series, he became convinced of the advantages of technology, such as adding sets and creating crowds using computer graphics. Most of the crew, led by Gary McCallum, followed Lucas to The Phantom Menace, and later to Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. These innovations, introduced during the creation of the Chronicles, became the basis for the visual style and scale of the prequels.

Indiana Jones and the Lost Kingdom («Индиана Джонс и потерянное королевство»), который стал значительным шагом в развитии игровой франшизы. Игры о «Индиане Джонсе» продолжают привлекать внимание игроков благодаря увлекательным сюжетам и захватывающему игровому процессу, сочетая элементы приключений и головоломок.
The game had a unique tagline: "Nobody told Indiana Jones the rules. And nobody will tell you either." This means that the developers decided not to reveal the rules to players, allowing them to independently find solutions to each of the ten puzzles. Without solving these puzzles, it was impossible to complete the level. This approach creates an atmosphere of mystery and encourages players to use their analytical skills to achieve the goal.
The heyday of the original Indiana Jones games came in the 1990s, beginning with the ambitious project "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis." This project became an important milestone in the history of video games, receiving its own comic book adaptation and introducing new elements to the gaming industry. Indiana Jones games of the 1990s stood out not only for their captivating plots but also for their innovative approach to gameplay, which contributed to the franchise's growing popularity and strengthening its market position.

The plot of the game "The Fate of Atlantis" takes place in 1939, after the events of all three Indiana Jones films. On the eve of World War II, Indiana Jones, along with his old friend Sophie Hapgood, who left archeology for a career as a psychic, tries to stop a group of Nazis. Their goal is to find Atlantis and use its unique technology to achieve godlike power. The game received critical acclaim and was awarded "Game of the Year" by several publications, and its sales exceeded one million copies. This makes it one of the most popular and successful games in the action-adventure genre.
The success of The Fate of Atlantis led to the development of a sequel at LucasArts, titled Indiana Jones and the Iron Phoenix. The game's plot takes place after the end of World War II. In it, the surviving Nazis seek to find the Philosopher's Stone to resurrect Hitler and their other leaders. The only one who can thwart their plans is Indiana Jones, this time assisted by a Soviet major named Nadezhda. This game promised a mixture of adventure and historical events, making it attractive to fans of the series and lovers of intriguing stories.
The game's development lasted about a year and a half, when LucasArts decided to share the news with its international partners. At that point, German colleagues warned the developers about possible difficulties with the release of Iron Phoenix in Germany due to the emphasis on the actions of neo-Nazis. Since Germany is an important market for adventure games, LucasArts management decided it would be more practical to cancel development entirely.
The plot of the second planned sequel, Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny, centers on the Spear of Longinus, one of the most significant relics of Christianity. It is the spear with which the Roman legionary Longinus ended Christ's suffering on the cross. This time, LucasArts decided to outsource the game's development to a smaller studio. However, the LucasArts management's lack of experience in managing such projects led to the game's eventual cancellation.
In the late 1990s, at the height of Lara Croft's popularity, LucasArts decided to update the Indiana Jones series by transforming the classic adventure games into 3D action games inspired by Tomb Raider. This approach resulted in games such as Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine (1999), in which the protagonist, Indy, fights Soviet agents in 1947 for an ancient artifact that opens a portal to another dimension. Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb (2003) takes place in 1935, with Indy searching for the final resting place of China's last emperor. In Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings (2009), Indy searches for the legendary Staff of Moses in 1939. Interestingly, in these games, the hero exhibits signs of amnesia, as in previous books, Indy had already searched for both the Philosopher's Stone and the Staff of Moses. This evolution of the character and his adventures highlights the fluidity of gameplay and the desire for new challenges in the world of video games.

Despite LucasArts' efforts to create an Indiana Jones game in the style of Lara Croft, these attempts were unsuccessful. The most popular games of the time were the two LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures games, which retold the stories of the first four films in LEGO format. With the release of The Staff of Kings and the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney, further development of Indiana Jones games, as well as books and comics, was suspended. The new license holders sat idle for a decade before finally launching new projects, including the film Wheel of Destiny and the video game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

They are now part of the Microsoft Gaming division, and the company's management has clearly stated that the new indie game will not be released on the PlayStation platform. This decision underlines Microsoft's strategy of content exclusivity for its gaming systems.

The game's plot takes place in Set in 1937, between the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, the protagonist, Indy, begins his adventure after stealing a mysterious artifact that seems to have no particular value. This artifact was stolen from the Marshall College Museum, and Indy decides to discover how this theft is connected to one of history's greatest mysteries. During his search, he encounters numerous architectural monuments and historically significant sites. His journey will take him to the Vatican and Rome, as well as the deserts of Egypt and the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas. This adventure is filled with excitement, mystery, and historical discoveries, which make it even more captivating.
The game will feature many interesting characters. Along with Indy, two central characters will be key players, each of whom will bring unique contributions to the story and gameplay. Indiana Jones Comics
Following the success of Star Wars comics, which saved Marvel from bankruptcy in the early 1980s, the publishing house obtained the license for another of George Lucas's universes. First, Marvel released an adaptation of the film Raiders of the Lost Ark, and then launched a comic book series called The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones. The story and illustrations for this series were created by John Byrne, one of the leading artists and screenwriters of his time. Indiana Jones comics have become an important part of culture and continue to attract the attention of adventure fans.
The events of the series take place after the events of The Ark, and familiar characters such as Marion and Marcus Brody appear in the narrative. Sallah and Shorty, who appeared after the release of Temple of Doom, also have their cameo roles. Author Byrne actively develops his own canon, introducing new storylines that continue from issue to issue. Particular attention is paid to original characters, among whom stand out Indy's rival, archaeologist Ian McIver, and wealthy Mediterranean oligarch Ali Ben Ayoub. The latter often turns to the services of assassins from the Ismaili order, which, like their counterparts from Assassin’s Creed, existed at least until the middle of the 20th century.

In 1991, Dark Horse acquired the rights to publish comics based on the Indiana Jones series. This happened almost simultaneously with the acquisition of the license to create comics based on Star Wars. Dark Horse became a key player in the comic book market, offering unique stories and expanding the universe of popular franchises.
From 1992 to 1996, Dark Horse published seven limited series comics. These were mainly adaptations of video games that were released concurrently, but there were also original stories. For example, in the stories "Thunder in the East" and "The Sargasso Sea," Indiana Jones faced various adventures: he saved the secret scrolls of Buddha from Japanese invaders and fought modern-day pirates in the mysterious Sargasso Sea. These comics not only expanded the Indiana Jones universe, but also brought new elements to the familiar story, attracting the attention of both video game fans and comic book lovers.

The initial issues of the comics were in good demand, but after a few years, their sales dropped significantly. Because of this, Dark Horse decided to suspend the publication of new comics. Not only were all planned projects canceled, but also the announced, partially completed limited series "Indiana Jones and the Lost Horizon." The plot of this series took place in 1926 and focused on Indiana Jones's friendship with Abner Ravenwood. Once again, Marion's father was overlooked within the franchise.
In 2008, Dark Horse revisited the iconic Indiana Jones character with two miniseries. The first was an adaptation of the film Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, directed by John Jackson Miller, known for his work on the comic book series Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The second miniseries is an original story titled Indiana Jones and the Tomb of the Gods, written by Rob Williams and illustrated by Steve Scott. These comics not only revived interest in the adventures of Indiana Jones, but also expanded his universe, attracting both long-time fans and new readers.

The novel "Tomb of the Gods" takes place in 1931 in Norilsk, where a group of three archaeologists discovers the key to a mysterious tomb of the gods. This artifact is divided between them. Five years later, the Nazis seize one of the parts of the key and begin an active hunt for the remaining two fragments. The key to the tomb becomes an object of greed and the desire for power, which leads to exciting events full of tension and surprises. The story immerses the reader in a world of archaeological discoveries and dangerous adventures associated with ancient secrets and modern threats.
The archaeologist gives his part of the key to Indiana Jones, but soon dies. Indy and Marcus Brody find themselves caught in a thrilling race across the globe, including stops in Tibet, Shanghai, Japan, and the Siberian tundra. Along the way, they compete with Nazis and the charming adventurer Janice Le Roy, who is acting in the interests of the highest bidder. This gripping story combines elements of adventure, historical mysteries, and intriguing encounters, creating a unique atmosphere of searching and fighting for ancient artifacts.

The comics "The Kingdom" and "Tomb of the Gods" are the latest in the Dr. Jones series of adventures. No further announcements about a continuation of this popular story are expected at this time.

McGregor was an excellent choice to create sequels to the Indiana Jones adventures. A keen archaeologist, he traveled extensively around the world in the 1980s, visiting virtually every location featured in the Indy books. He even organized extreme tours deep into the Amazon, demonstrating his deep connection with the subject. Although his collaboration with Lucasfilm could have continued longer, after writing six books in two years, the writer needed a break to recharge his creative juices.
According to McGregor, Lucas's involvement in the project was limited. He only allowed the use of Marcus Brody, forbade the inclusion of other characters from the films, and insisted on the creation of prequels. He also insisted that the stories be based on real myths, legends, and histories. In one case, he even demanded the removal of a sexual scene.
All of McGregor's novels are set in the 1920s. Over the course of six books, Indy encounters unique events: he investigates the Oracle of Delphi, searches for Noah's Ark, and attempts to find evidence of Merlin's existence, as well as a lost city in the Amazon jungle and a unicorn's horn. He also finds himself in a mysterious "inner world" connected to the Easter Island statues. However, McGregor's most significant achievement is the introduction of Deirdre Campbell, Indy's first wife, who adds depth and emotional richness to the entire plot.
Deirdre, one of Indy's first students, played a key role in helping her professor with a case involving Merlin and ultimately won his heart. However, their happiness was short-lived and ended tragically. Indy's next adventure, a journey into the Amazon jungle in search of the lost expedition of British explorer Percy Fawcett, proved fatal for Deirdre. On the way back, Mr. and Mrs. Jones were involved in a plane crash, from which only Mr. Jones emerged alive. This story highlights the dangers explorers face and reminds us how quickly fortunes can change.

Connor McGregor's hiatus was used to replace him with Martin Caidin, an American author and screenwriter who had established himself as an authority on aeronautics and aviation. By the time he was replaced, Caidin had considerable experience and numerous achievements under his belt—over 50 fiction books, most notably the novel Cyborg. This novel became the literary basis for the popular 1970s television series The Six Million Dollar Man, confirming its influence on culture and the development of the science fiction genre.
Caidin did a significant amount of research, researching all six previous books, but his personal interests influenced the content of his own novels. In one of them, the protagonist, Indiana, embarks on a thrilling journey around the world in search of a gang of air pirates, completely abandoning archaeology. Nevertheless, publishers were pleased with the sales of Caidin's books. Unfortunately, the writer's illness, when he was diagnosed with cancer, prevented him from continuing to work on the adventures of Dr. Jones.

The third and final author of Indiana Jones books for adults was Max McCoy, a former investigative journalist and writer known for his Westerns. He wrote four novels, each with an original plot. In these stories, Dr. Jones faces incredible challenges: he must delve into the underworld, find the Philosopher's Stone, Aaron's Rod, and the mysterious Book of Omega, which contains the entire history of mankind - past, present, and future. In addition, he discovers a Cretaceous island inhabited by the last dinosaurs - Triceratops. Throughout all four novels, McCoy shares a central plot line related to the curse of the crystal skull found by Indy during one of his expeditions. These works offer readers thrilling adventures and profound reflections on destiny and legacy.
In 1999, Indiana Jones and the Secret of the Sphinx was published, which was the last in the Bantam Books series. By the end of the decade, the franchise's popularity had declined significantly, and sales of the later books failed to meet expectations. However, ten years later, amid the interest in the film "The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull", the publishing house Del Rey decided to release a new original work about the adventures of Indiana Jones.

Steve Perry's novel Indiana Jones and the Army of the Dead takes the reader to 1943, during World War II. The protagonist, Indiana Jones, is in military service and, together with his trusted friend George McHale, known as Mac, seeks to stop the Nazis and the Japanese from obtaining the Heart of Darkness, a mythical artifact with the ability to resurrect the dead. This gripping story combines elements of adventure and historical fiction, immersing the reader in a world of danger and intense battles.
In 2009, Rob McGregor planned to return to the legendary Indiana Jones and create a novelization of the video game Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings. McGregor successfully completed work on the book, but the release was canceled due to problems with the game's production. The author noted that the insufficient number of Indiana Jones fans was the reason for the decision to terminate the project.

Children's books about the adventures of Indy have their own unique history. The first original editions appeared in the eighties, when the Find Your Fate gamebook series gained popularity. In these books, readers were given the opportunity to independently choose the direction of the plot, which made reading interactive and exciting. This series is also notable in that several of its parts were written by the famous author R.L. Stine, who is the creator of the cult Goosebumps and Fear Street cycles. His work is deservedly called the Stephen King of children's literature, which emphasizes the significance and influence of his works on a young audience. In this context, Indy becomes not only a hero, but also a symbol of adventure and creativity, inspiring a new generation of readers.
In the nineties, novelizations of various episodes of The Indiana Jones Chronicles were released for children. In the 2000s, Scholastic released two original young adult novels by veteran Lucasfilm writers Ryder Windham and Jonathan William Rinzler. These works proved popular with young adult audiences and expanded the Indiana Jones universe, offering new adventures and engaging stories.
In 1992, Ballantine Books launched the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles series of novelizations aimed at an adult audience. The first book, The Case of Mata Hari, was written by James Luceno, a renowned author who later became one of the most renowned authors of the Star Wars expanded universe. This book series attracted the attention of Indiana Jones fans and deepened their understanding of the character and his adventures.

Indiana Jones and the Army of the Dead and two books from Scholastic are the latest literary adventures of Indiana Jones. Even the release of the fifth film in 2023 has not led to the creation of a novelization, which emphasizes the uniqueness and completeness of the current publications about the famous archaeologist.
