My name is Ksenia Ponomareva, and I'm a game sound designer and composer. My primary focus is creating sound design and music for indie projects. In this essay, I'll share the principles behind game soundtrack creation and illustrate them with an example of my current work on the game "Vasilisa and Baba Yaga" by Baba Yaga Games.
The story and visual style of "Vasilisa and Baba Yaga" draw on a rich heritage of folk culture, including fairy tales, research, songs, and beliefs. Together with my colleague Alexander Yukhnovets, who also trained at Skillbox, we decided to use folk music as a basis and adapt it to create a unique sound design for the game. This allows for a deeper immersion into the atmosphere of Russian folk tales and makes the gameplay more engaging and authentic.
After studying the plot, we selected several folk songs that perfectly match the scenes from the game. We invited the talented actress and singer Ekaterina Ryazhskikh to record them. Ekaterina is the author of unique projects based on Russian culture and has a deep understanding of the folklore genre. Her performance style perfectly meets our requirements.
I had no experience working with folklore material in the gaming industry. One of the main difficulties was the lack of a clear meter in Russian folk songs. During editing, I had to change the rhythmic pattern to adapt the free melodic line to a strict grid. This required a creative approach and a deep understanding of musical structures, which ultimately enriched my experience and expanded my horizons for working with folklore themes in games.
The second unusual aspect is the lack of fixed harmony in folk songs, as this is a heterophonic tradition. This gave us the opportunity not only to incorporate electronic instruments into the arrangement but also to update the harmonization of folk songs, combining traditional elements with modern musical trends. Thus, we were able to create a unique sound that reflects both heritage and innovation in music. When the word "folklore" is mentioned, traditional musical instruments such as the balalaika, accordion, and button accordion come to mind. However, in our interpretation, folklore has a darker connotation, and there is less of a sense of fun. We decided to focus on the winged gusli, whose mysterious and lyrical sound is ideal for creating a dark atmosphere. These instruments help convey the depth and mystery of folk music, enriching our project with a unique sound design. We invited Ekaterina Dolmatova, a well-known member of the ethno group Theodor Bastard, to record the gusli. Ekaterina will bring a unique sound and atmosphere to our work thanks to her experience and talent. Her mastery of the gusli will allow us to create unique musical content and enrich our work with traditional motifs.
With Katya, we created several instrumental versions of songs, adding gusli parts to existing arrangements. We also experimented with various sound production techniques: detuning the strings, using drumsticks with felt, rustling the body, and even shouting into the sound hole. These methods proved useful in further work on the game's sound design, allowing us to achieve a unique sound and atmosphere.
To record the gusli, we used a "dark" microphone, which provides a deep and rich sound transmission. A similarly colored reverb was used during mixing, enhancing the gloomy effect and creating an atmosphere that matches the concept. This approach to equipment selection helps achieve a unique sound that emphasizes the character and mood of the composition.
The game features a comical element, manifested through the doll that helps Vasilisa overcome obstacles and fight various evil spirits. Her amusing movements and interactions with the game world bring a smile to players. It was important to reflect this humor in the soundtrack while maintaining the overall atmosphere of a dark fairy tale. The musical accompaniment should harmonize with the game, emphasizing the comic moments without disrupting immersion in the mysterious and tense world.
We created ditties to accompany scenes of the doll's battle with evil spirits, using a scythe as a musical instrument. This is a tradition common in the Lipetsk region, where a scythe blade or a stove damper were used as percussion. Our ditties emphasize the atmosphere of the struggle and add a unique folklore element to the scenes.
Sasha brought a real scythe to the studio, on which he created a rhythm, and he and Katya performed ditties to it. Ditties are usually associated with cheerful and funny motives, but Katya chose for us eerie options with a frightening subtext. For example:

To effectively integrate a soundtrack into gameplay, it is not enough to simply create music that matches the plot. A game soundtrack differs significantly from the musical accompaniment of films or animations. Unlike cinema, games represent a non-linear form of storytelling, where non-linearity manifests itself in the unpredictable timing of game events and the many possible outcomes. This requires composers to carefully approach the creation of music that should dynamically respond to the player's actions and create a unique experience depending on the choices and style of play.
Simply adding a few linear tracks to a project is impossible due to the specifics of the musical design. For this reason, composers often use a system of loops—short musical fragments that smoothly transition from end to beginning, forming seamless cycles. These loops activate and stop when specific triggers are reached, allowing for a dynamic and interactive soundtrack that adapts to changes in gameplay or a multimedia project.
There are also loop layers that can be randomly combined with one another. They are added and removed at specific moments, preventing monotony within a musical fragment and creating a sense of sonic variety. This ensures a dynamic musical accompaniment that holds the player's attention and enhances the overall experience.
We also applied this approach to the music in Vasilisa: in addition to song loops, we have vocal and instrumental versions with unique layers. The game features layers that activate during minigames, as well as layers that change the mood depending on the dynamics of gameplay. This creates depth to the musical accompaniment and enhances the player's immersion in the game's atmosphere.

When we talk about noir, jazz immediately comes to mind. We imagine smoky bars, men in formal suits and fedoras. One of the characters in "Loretta," Detective Frank Chambers, is depicted in this spirit. However, despite the overall atmosphere of American noir, jazz is given only a small place in the project. This pleased me, as it was my first attempt at creating music in this unusual genre, and both I and the developer liked it. The resulting composition is not pure jazz, but nevertheless, it was included in the original soundtrack.
When discussing references, we focused on several composers and films that convey a similar spirit and atmosphere. As a musical guide, we chose Dominik Harlan's work "Musica Ricercata" for Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut," in which minimalist keyboards create a unique mood. We also considered Bernard Herrmann's composition "Vertigo" from Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo," in which tense strings intensify the feeling of unease.
Another important reference was Nick Bicata's "Killer Cadillac" soundtrack to Philip Ridley's "Reflective Skin," known for its drawn-out and dramatic string sections. We also considered the work of Ennio Morricone, in particular the composition "Ladies And Gentlemen Of The Jury" for Adrian Lyne's "Lolita," where an attentive listener might notice parallels between the film's opening credits and the game's main menu score, a kind of homage.
We also turned to the work of Oleg Krysa and Thorleif Thedeen, who created the soundtrack to Yorgos Lanthimos's "The Killing of a Sacred Deer," in which tonal clusters of strings unite various musical ideas. In addition, we researched the soundtracks from the remakes of Suspiria and Midsommar, which also play a significant role in creating the atmospheric sound.
The score for Loretta combines elements of 1920s and 1930s film noir and thrillers from various eras, with an emphasis on string instruments and minimalist keyboards. The main goal was to create an atmosphere of tension and suspense, which helped enhance the emotional impact and the viewer's involvement in the story.
While analyzing the references, we realized that the original music should not take center stage in the gameplay, but rather support and complement the various episodes. In our project, the emphasis is on text and narrative, which allows players to more deeply immerse themselves in the atmosphere and plot. The music acts as a background, enhancing emotional moments without distracting from the main narrative.
Loretta is, first and foremost, a literary and cinematic story. This results in a minimalistic interaction between the soundtrack and the gameplay, which is especially noticeable when choosing references. This limited interaction is necessary to focus the player's attention and clarify the atmosphere of each episode, thereby creating a deeper immersion in the plot.

The soundtrack consists of a chamber composition of instruments, primarily keyboards and strings, with the exception of the main theme with flute and one jazz composition with drums. Our goal was to create a minimalist sound, so we limited ourselves to two or three instruments. In some moments, a sense of scale is achieved, as was done in "The Killing of a Sacred Deer," through the use of tonal clusters of string instruments.
This is my first game project for which the original soundtrack was created primarily in-house, with the exception of a few compositions written by guest musicians. I did not aim to take a place among pioneers such as Yamaoka or Santaolalla, as this is my debut project. The developer defined the required musical concept in advance, which also influenced the approach to creating the music. It's important to note that this project is a thriller, which places specific demands on the musical accompaniment to create an atmosphere of tension and intrigue.
I don't have a musical education and still haven't learned to read music. Nevertheless, I experienced incredible joy while working on the Loretta project. I want to express my gratitude to developer Yakov Butuzov, who made this opportunity possible. Effective music and sound effects enrich the experience of interacting with content, enhancing impressions and audience engagement.

In my projects, I pay special attention to the atmosphere of the scenes to convey the desired mood to the player during the gaming experience. When collaborating with composers, I clearly formulate the emotions that a particular musical fragment should evoke. My main genre is slow, melancholic adventures, which determines the meditative style of the compositions. This is especially evident in the game 35MM, where the slow gameplay of the walking simulator harmoniously combines with a visceral soundtrack. The musical background sets the player to a certain rhythm and helps them understand current tasks, as well as warns of threats or informs them that they can calmly explore the surrounding world. Thus, the visuals and musical accompaniment create a unified atmosphere and enhance the player's interaction with the game space.
In large projects, slight discrepancies between the soundtrack and in-game events sometimes arise. For example, intense and tense music may not end after a combat segment, leading to player confusion. They can't figure out whether a new challenge awaits them or if they can relax. This can be considered a "feature, not a bug," and such moments can truly add intrigue to gameplay. However, in some cases, such nuances can negatively impact the player's experience, creating discomfort and distracting from the main plot.
One interesting theme in audio design is the formation of reflexes in players through associations with certain sounds and musical motifs. In the 7th Sector project, I used a dark, rhythmic motif, reminiscent of a trombone, that played when enemies appeared. This composition served as a signal of impending danger, prompting the player to be ready to fight or flee. Thus, sound design not only enhances the game's atmosphere but also influences player behavior, making it an essential element of gameplay.
Over time, these reflexes become ingrained, and the composition begins to serve as a beacon, associating with certain events. This process is similar to the effect of color triggers: for example, red evokes associations with danger, while green or blue are perceived as symbols of safety or a comfort zone. Thus, the formation of associations between sound and color signals plays an important role in the perception of the surrounding world and can be used in various fields, such as marketing, psychology, and even art.

In The Light Remake, I used a similar effect, despite the lack of enemies and obvious threats. In the underground section of the game, there is a scene where the player finds themselves in a labyrinth of basement rooms, and finding the exit proves challenging. The player is also hinted at the potential danger, and tense, rhythmic music heightens this tension. Repetitive musical motifs are actively used to create an oppressive atmosphere. A striking example is the tracks from the classic horror game Silent Hill, where many background themes consist of repeating metallic sounds, grinding, and other unmelodic effects. Monotonous rhythms evoke associations with the sound of a heartbeat and the ticking of a clock, evoking feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, and time constraints. The use of such musical elements helps enhance the player's immersion in the game's atmosphere and create the necessary tension.
In my new project, Hail to the Rainbow, I actively use sound triggers. The game's core concept centers on robots, and players will encounter dangerous and sometimes terrifying enemies. Each enemy encounter will be accompanied by unique musical themes, combining electronic and mechanical sound effects. Sound cues will also alert the player when they are detected by enemies, building tension and anticipation of what's to come. These elements will help create an immersive atmosphere and enhance the gameplay.
