I decided to study at Skillbox to become a producer because I strive to develop my skills in media production and project management. Since childhood, I was interested in dancing, KVN, and other creative fields, so for a long time I tried to persuade my mother to send me to the acting or directing department. However, she believed that this was not a real profession. In the end, I chose philology at the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia. So, at 17, I was left alone in St. Petersburg and accidentally fell into the circle of filmmakers. As they say, if you don't look for them, they will find you.

They were also students and had their own connections in the industry. Some of them were already working in film, and gradually I began to receive various scripts, ideas, films, and shorts. Eventually, I ended up working with a director friend of mine who had won a grant from the Start program. After visiting the set, I realized that filmmaking is serious work, requiring significant effort and creativity.

I was fascinated by the filmmaking process and thought about what I could contribute to this amazing world. I don't see myself as a screenwriter, as I don't strive to write. Directing isn't really my path either, as every director has their own unique working methods. Ultimately, I came to the idea of ​​producing. I started reading books on the subject, such as "Scriptwriting in Southern California" and "The Producer Steps In," and realized this was exactly what I wanted to do. I enjoy interacting with people, building connections, and achieving goals. I have a passion for coordinating a team, which makes producing the perfect choice for me.

Budgeting and developing a detailed PPC are skills that can be learned from textbooks, but true mastery comes with hands-on experience. When we worked on my first production project "As You Want" in Taganrog, we We urgently needed costumes for five literary classics. However, our budget was limited. I decided to approach a Rostov store specializing in menswear with a proposal for collaboration. The store accepted our proposal, and we ultimately signed a contract, receiving costumes worth approximately 150,000 rubles completely free of charge. This was a great example of how to find solutions on a limited budget using creativity and collaboration. I found the script for my project, "As You Want," on a specialized platform dedicated to drama and screenwriting. It caught my attention with its originality and depth of characters, as well as its timely theme that resonates with modern audiences. I met Sonya in the first stream "Video Workshop" Skillbox. After the first lesson, we were sent a questionnaire asking who we would like to work with. I immediately chose Sonya, as I liked her demeanor and noticed that we shared a lot of interests and views. However, we were assigned to different teams, and mine initially didn't have a producer. Nevertheless, Sonya was interested in our idea and joined my team during the film's production stage.

Did you produce the film entirely in Taganrog, or were you able to organize some of the work remotely, from Moscow?

Here's a helpful tip: if you need something from someone, try to meet them in person. Communicating remotely, for example, via email, often leads to refusals, since it's easy for the other person. However, when you come and share your story face to face, explaining your plans and ideas, your interlocutor is more likely to be interested and support you. That's why I decided to go to Taganrog, and I haven't regretted it.

Taganrog is different from large cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg. When I went to a cafe and asked the owner to feed a film crew of 16 people, he was initially surprised: "I've never ordered something like this, but let's give it a try." In the end, we were able to buy chicken sandwiches at practically cost. This guy was genuinely happy to participate in our project, and such support of local businesses created a special atmosphere during filming. Taganrog, with its friendly people and openness to cooperation, became a great place to realize our ideas.

Residents of provincial towns are always ready to help, unlike Moscow restaurants, where service costs can reach hundreds of thousands of rubles per evening. In the provinces, they value human interaction and a willingness to support, which creates an atmosphere of friendliness and mutual assistance. Unlike large cities, where commerce is sometimes put above personal connections, in small towns, relationships between people remain paramount.

When she joined the project, she immediately made her position clear: we either create a full-length film or stick with a student project. This determined the level of our involvement in the process, establishing a high standard of quality. The result was a full-fledged production with a team of 16 people and clear agreements. She has an excellent understanding of the filmmaking process, knows how a set functions, and how team members should communicate. The project would hardly have been possible without the clear structure Sonya provided.

Unexpectedly finding myself in Taganrog was a real discovery for me. I never imagined that I would end up in this city. It's like a journey into space - full of surprises and new experiences. The main thing is to set goals and persistently move towards achieving them, using all possible means. Taganrog has become for me a symbol of striving for new heights and opportunities.

During the filming of the movie "As You Want" there were indeed difficult moments when the situation seemed critical. In such moments, it's important to remain calm and find a solution. I tried to analyze the problem, discussing ideas with the team and suggesting alternative approaches. Thanks to our joint efforts and creative thinking, we were able to overcome the difficulties and continue working on the project. This experience once again confirmed that in the film industry, it's not only skill that matters, but also the ability to adapt to circumstances.

We once filmed at the Southern Federal University, a state educational institution known for its strict bureaucracy. Working with such organizations often requires numerous approvals and documents. Luckily, our director, Ksyusha Puzyrenko, a graduate of this university, helped us find a contact who granted permission to film in the building. However, he initially didn't realize that our team consisted of 16 people and that we had brought lighting equipment, cables, radios, and other film equipment with us. I met with him again to discuss the details and coordinate all the necessary documents so that we could work smoothly at the university. But, unfortunately, our difficulties didn't end there.

Such situations test producers' resilience. Imagine: it's Sunday morning, eight o'clock, with a difficult shift ahead, and suddenly a message comes in: "Filming is prohibited today; the use of a fog machine is prohibited." I turn to the head security guard, who, naturally, is home on the day off. He's uninterested in the fact that we're filming a movie and doesn't care about our strict schedule. I explain that we made a promise to the university rector that we would do the filming at SFedU at the highest level, and without smoke, that would be impossible. The guard says he'll call back in 10 minutes, but two minutes later he tells us that the security guards will open the necessary doors for us. Thus, even in difficult circumstances, it's important to find a solution and maintain professional connections.

A Producer's Strength Test

You became a producer without formal education and the necessary qualifications?

Before joining Skillbox, I already had experience in producing. I understood that to effectively perform my duties, I needed to master the theoretical basis. I was looking for clear and structured information that would be available on paper. That's why I chose Skillbox. A pleasant bonus was that I was one of the first students studying producing. Being a pioneer in this field is always exciting and interesting.

At the moment I am shooting in St. Petersburg. This city is famous for its unique architecture, historical monuments and picturesque canals. I explore its atmosphere by capturing famous landmarks like the Hermitage, the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, and Nevsky Prospect. St. Petersburg offers a variety of exciting locations, and I strive to capture its magic in my work.

In St. Petersburg, we began work on a documentary about a girl who collects videotapes, called "The Last Unicorns." We encountered many challenges during the production of this film. First, we had to find a replacement for the main character, who dropped out of the project due to personal circumstances. Second, although the weather was beautiful during pre-production, it deteriorated sharply once filming began.

We encountered some location-related challenges, but we successfully overcame them. There are many things to collect, but our story focuses on videotapes. Imagine: the girl has about 500 videotapes at home, which take up an entire shelf almost reaching the ceiling. In St. Petersburg, we were fortunate to find a video salon owned by professional filmmakers. They understood our goal and the entire process perfectly and were happy to accommodate us. They'd say, "Need time to film? Come on over. Want to shoot a scene with the heroine? No problem! Need popcorn or tea? We'll arrange it all!" The salon also hosts screenings with live simultaneous translation. Visitors can enjoy the film while a professional actor translates it, and participation in the events is often free or requires a donation. So, we not only collect unique videotapes but also create a fascinating cultural experience for all viewers.

One of the key responsibilities of a film producer is film promotion. How do you promote your film?

We are currently actively preparing the film "As You Want" for festival participation: we are gathering the necessary documents and researching suitable events. We planned to hold a private screening in Taganrog and began negotiations with a local cinema and businesses, but for obvious reasons, this process has been put on hold. We need to carefully consider options for implementing this screening. Regarding the short film "The Last Unicorns," we came up with the idea of ​​presenting it as a film advertisement. We are currently working on preparing a full package of documents, including a high-concept and cost estimate, to propose the creation of similar content to major companies. We have also submitted an application for participation in the Beat Film Festival.

Are you planning on working on TV series in the future?

I haven't had any experience working on TV series yet, and this topic is turning out to be quite complex. I'm not a screenwriter, but to create a truly captivating series, like the Russian "Vampires of the Middle Lane" or foreign projects such as "The Young Pope" and the cult "The Sopranos," it is necessary to carefully develop each character and each plot twist. This requires deep analysis, creativity, and an understanding of viewer expectations, which makes the process of developing a series extremely interesting and responsible.

Creating a web series can be a great experience, but it is important to clearly define your goals and motivations. Currently, I feel more comfortable working in both short and feature film formats. Reflecting on the reasons and goals will help create high-quality content that will attract viewers and ensure a successful project launch.

In St. Petersburg, I gained a unique experience in the field of documentary filmmaking. Previously, I had almost no understanding of the process of its creation. Documentary filmmaking allows for creativity, but everything can change at any moment. Unlike feature films, you can't control every stage of filming, and you won't be able to reshoot a scene. This makes the process more lively and natural, but at the same time, it requires a high degree of adaptability and the ability to work under uncertainty.

In our case, about 15 drafts went from the initial idea to the final version. Sonya, while on set, was well aware of which scenes and dialogue weren't working or didn't flow properly. Thanks to her suggestions, we reworked, for example, the ending of the story.
