Complexities associated with copyright compliance

Famous street artist Shepard Fairey designed a poster called "Hope" during Barack Obama's first presidential campaign in 2008. The design quickly gained popularity and became the Obama campaign's emblem, gaining widespread recognition internationally. However, there was one important caveat.

In January 2009, the Associated Press reported that the image on which Fairey's design was based was shot by freelance photographer Manny Garcia. The agency subsequently demanded compensation for the use of the photo in Fairey's work. As a result, the artist was forced to share his income with the photographer.

Attractive, but risky: the dangers of bright design

The John Hancock Tower in Boston presented numerous difficulties from the very beginning. Designed by Henry Cobb, the 60-story structure initially clashed with the surrounding architecture. Particularly worrying was the possibility of it overshadowing the historic Trinity Church. The church subsequently filed a lawsuit, claiming that construction work had caused damage.

However, the real difficulties arose during the building's construction. High winds caused the glass window panels, each weighing 500 pounds (226 kg), to fall. Their absence was temporarily replaced with plywood sheets, leading to the building being nicknamed the "Plywood Palace." Ultimately, all 10,344 windows were replaced.

These measures led to the installation of an inertial damper, as it became clear that the building was experiencing excessive vibrations, which were noticeable to residents on the upper floors. However, the most shocking conclusion was the conclusion of Swiss engineer Bruno Turliman, who warned that the building could collapse in strong wind conditions.

As a result, additional steel supports were installed around the structure, which cost 5 million dollars.

The design and construction solutions embodied in this tower serve as a clear example of how not to approach design.

Design flaws led to the completion of the project

There are many initiatives that become the subject of discussion, but every now and then a project appears that causes a real wave of outrage. In 2011, the Dutch architecture firm MVRDV presented the concept of two residential complexes, dubbed "Cloud", located in South Korea.

The square towers were connected using the so-called "pixel cloud", which created an association with the famous Twin Towers during the tragic events of September 11th. The designers from the Netherlands insisted that the presented images were completely unrelated to the debris that flew from the two World Trade Center buildings, and claimed that their inspiration came from the cloud...

However, it was too late. The architectural firm apologized and the project was closed.

Designers accused of racial discrimination

In 2019, a new Gucci sweater, notable for its high price, became the subject of heated debate due to its resemblance to blackface. The design featured a flap covering the mouth and was decorated with bright red lipstick. While the designer likely intended it to reference BDSM culture, many interpreted it as racial slurs. To avoid possible legal action, the fashion house decided to remove the sweater from sale and apologized, noting that the incident had taught them an "important lesson."

Street artists receive payment for their graffiti

Abandoned manufacturing complex in New York has been transformed into an iconic A space for graffiti artists and street culture enthusiasts, called 5 Pointz, was created. Developer Jerry Wolkoff acquired the property in the early 1970s. His initial intention was to develop the buildings and surrounding areas, but something went wrong, and the landscaping project was completed prematurely. In the 1990s, Wolkoff decided to lease out the space, offering artists studio space. Ultimately, the developer decided to demolish the building to make way for a new residential complex surrounded by beautiful, well-maintained grounds. 5 Pointz was finally demolished in 2014. Graffiti artists sued for the illegal destruction of their work and won. The judge ordered Wolkoff to pay the maximum damages allowed by law: $150,000 for each of the 45 works, for a total of $6.7 million in damages to 21 artists. However, the gentrification project was still carried out, and an upscale residential complex was built in its place.
