Font designer on the essence of trends

Font designer at NT Type studio. An active member of the Play Faces, typofriends, and "Making Letters" communities. A speaker at the Yo-fest and Design Weekend festivals. A co-author of projects shortlisted for the Sreda-2023 festival. In my work, I strive to create unique fonts that harmoniously combine aesthetics and functionality. My experience and participation in various projects help me develop my skills and share my knowledge with colleagues and like-minded people in the field of typography. In the past, creating fonts was a complex and labor-intensive process, requiring significant effort from artisans. They used physical tools and methods: initially, fonts were created using brushes and pens, then artisans moved on to punch engraving, matrix embossing, and type foundry. With the advent of phototypesetting, some stages of font production have become faster, and the precision and detail of outlines have improved significantly. This transition opened up new opportunities for designers and simplified the process of creating unique fonts, which contributed to their popularity in various fields.
In modern design, letterforms are created using a mouse or a pen on a graphics tablet. This allows designers to make numerous adjustments and achieve high precision and accuracy in their work. Using graphics tablets significantly simplifies the font creation process and improves the quality of the final product.
Digital tools allow for precise adjustment of desired outlines at high speed, which allows for flexible experimentation with font shapes and motifs. This also allows for quick changes to the results. As a result, there is a trend toward using thin styles with hair-thin strokes, as well as the creation of distinct, clear lines and maximum contrast. These features make digital typography more expressive and relevant in modern designs.

New Gothic
A trend in contemporary design is the revival of ornamented fonts and lettering, characterized by contrasting strokes, sharp angles, and decorative elements. These visual features are reminiscent of traditional styles such as Fraktur and Schwabacher, as well as other blackletter fonts. The popularity of such fonts is explained by their ability to attract attention and add uniqueness to projects. Incorporating ornamental typefaces into design creates an atmosphere of historical depth and artistic expressiveness, making them ideal for a variety of applications, from printed materials to digital content.
Modern digital technologies have significantly improved the quality of blackletter typefaces, ensuring their clean and clear lines. This allows designers to use blackletter typography not only for historical projects but also for contemporary digital designs. Pairing blackletter typefaces with neutral sans-serifs, such as Inter, opens up new creative possibilities. This approach allows you to create stylish and modern visual compositions that attract attention and emphasize the uniqueness of the brand.

Gothic fonts, as a historical heritage, have deep roots dating back to the Middle Ages. These typefaces were originally used in manuscripts and ecclesiastical texts, featuring expressive forms and complex lines. Modern blackletter fonts draw inspiration from these traditions, preserving their distinctive features while adapting to modern design requirements.
Historical blackletter fonts, such as Textura and Fraktur, are distinguished by their decorative nature and unique style, making them popular for use in headlines and artistic projects. Modern interpretations of these fonts retain their aesthetics but offer more legible options suitable for a variety of media formats, including web design and print.
Blackletter fonts are widely used in a variety of fields, from logo design to book design and advertising. Their ability to attract attention and impart a distinctive character to text makes them sought after by designers and marketers. It is important to choose a suitable blackletter font that will correspond to the overall concept of the project, emphasizing its individuality and style.
Antique Fonts with Filigree Details
The Quiet Luxury trend, also known as "old money," has a significant influence on modern visual communications, including typography. In this context, a style characterized by restrained luxury and elegant antique fonts stands out. This approach emphasizes sophistication and quality, which is especially relevant in the world of fashion and design. As a result, typography becomes not just a means of conveying information, but an important element reflecting status and taste.
The current fonts are modern interpretations of the classic Garamond. In these new fonts, serifs have become thinner, strokes are clearer, and the number of decorative elements has increased. The characters in such fonts are executed with jewelry precision, which gives them the appearance of true calligraphic art. These features make fonts not only aesthetically pleasing but also easy to read, which is especially important for web design and printed materials.

Planned Chaos
2024 is seeing a new trend in font design. Modern designers are actively experimenting with combining serif and grotesque typefaces, as well as combining display and neutral fonts. This opens up opportunities for creating unique and expressive typographic solutions. Various styles and sizes can be used within a single set, which helps achieve modularity and humanism in text design. Each element, each word in the composition can become an independent work of art, rich in details and eccentric forms. This approach to typography creates dynamic visual images and attracts attention.
Modern typographic trends showcase an interesting combination of italics and regular typefaces, as well as elegant calligraphy with geometrically precise letterforms. This new direction is very different from the punk design that preceded it. In contemporary typography, this visual chaos of characters is organized into clean lines against a minimalist background, creating a unified "spot" that attracts attention. These elements combine harmoniously to form a unique style that emphasizes content and aesthetics.

Reading is an important aspect of our lives. It not only develops thinking but also enriches our inner world. Books, articles, and blogs provide us with the opportunity to expand our horizons, gain new knowledge and inspiration. It is important to devote time to reading to develop your skills and enrich your vocabulary. Regardless of the genre, reading helps improve concentration and attention. Research shows that regular reading has a positive effect on emotional well-being and helps reduce stress. The choice of literature depends on personal preferences, but it is worth paying attention to works that can bring benefits and new ideas. Read to develop and find new horizons.
Typography without rules: Swiss punk
Swiss punk in typography is a bold and unusual direction, where traditional rules of text formatting are pushed into the background. This style combines elements of chaos and freedom, allowing designers to experiment with form and content. Unlike classic Swiss typography, which relies on strict principles such as the grid and symmetry, Swiss punk blurs boundaries, creating unique visual solutions.
This style emphasizes vibrant contrasts, unconventional fonts, and unexpected compositions. The use of varying font sizes and their combination with graphic elements helps convey emotional weight and draw attention to key messages. Swiss punk often incorporates elements of street culture and DIY aesthetics, making it particularly relevant to a younger audience.
It's also worth noting that Swiss punk allows for the creation of unique branding solutions that stand out from traditional design approaches. This style is suitable for those who want to convey their ideas in an unconventional and vibrant way, attracting attention and generating interest. As a result, Swiss punk is becoming an important element of contemporary visual culture, opening up new horizons in the world of typography.
Dots, Pixels, and Edges
A trend in typography is the use of elements that create a digital retro effect. These include visual characteristics such as "lost" pixels, distortions reminiscent of dot matrix printer ribbons, and microserifs similar to light catchers in phototypesetting. These elements bring uniqueness and a nostalgic mood to designs, making them popular in contemporary projects. The use of such styles helps create an atmosphere that attracts attention and piques the interest of viewers.
What's new in the world of fonts? Contemporary trends in font and character design are not direct copies of artifacts from the early computer era. Rather, they are an interpretation and subtle integration of random elements and retro forms that do not occupy a dominant place in the visualization. Instead, they create unique looks by combining old and new styles, allowing designers to experiment and find new solutions. These trends reflect a desire for originality and creativity in graphic design, which makes them relevant for contemporary visual art.

Moderate experiments in sans-serifs
Trends in font design continue to evolve. There may never come a time when designers will be satisfied with universal sans-serif fonts, especially when it comes to high-quality Cyrillic. Such fonts are rare, and much work remains to be done in this area. However, there is a growing trend for both mass-produced and custom grotesques with unique character. This creates new opportunities for designers seeking originality and expressiveness in their projects.
The visual character of fonts is shaped by micro-details, such as the connection of strokes in individual characters or the unique shape of diacritics. These small graphic experiments create interesting accents, making grotesque fonts more expressive without turning them into display fonts. This approach allows fonts to retain their individuality and harmony, which is especially important in contemporary design.

Smooth Plasticity
In recent years, decorative fonts have seen a strong trend toward using curves, waves, and curves in strokes. These elements give fonts a natural and botanical visual character, making them more appealing and organic. This typeface style creates a sense of warmth and naturalness, which is especially relevant in designs that strive for harmony and comfort. Using such fonts can significantly improve information comprehension and draw attention to visual content.
Current font trends emphasize the simplicity and lightness of modern display typefaces. These fonts contrast with more complex and rich styles such as Art Nouveau or Hippie, making them ideal for use in design. The simplicity of display fonts attracts attention and creates a pleasing visual experience, which is especially important in a highly competitive market. Incorporating such fonts into projects allows you to effectively convey ideas and moods that correspond to modern trends.

Rework the text, Maintaining the main theme and avoiding unnecessary details. Optimize it for SEO by adding keywords and phrases that relate to the topic. Avoid emojis and unnecessary symbols, and do not use sections or numbers. Your text should be clear and direct, without excess.
Art Nouveau Style: Fonts of the Past and Present
The Art Nouveau style, which emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, had a significant influence on the development of graphic design and typography. Characterized by smooth lines, asymmetrical shapes, and decorative elements, Art Nouveau brought new aesthetic qualities to fonts.
Modern fonts inspired by Art Nouveau continue to evolve while maintaining the core principles: elegance and expressiveness. Today, designers use hybrid fonts that combine classic Art Nouveau elements with modern trends such as minimalism and functionality.
The key aspects of Art Nouveau fonts are their decorativeness and attention to detail. This leads to the creation of unique fonts that are not only legible but also eye-catching. It is important to note that Art Nouveau fonts remain relevant in web design, as they help create visually appealing and harmonious interfaces.
Interest in Art Nouveau-inspired fonts is growing every year, indicating that their influence on modern design remains undiminished. Incorporating such fonts into projects allows you to create a unique style and emphasize your brand's individuality.
Text Design
The trend in modern graphic and web design is minimalism: the use of pure text without illustrations or decorative elements. Landing pages and presentations can resemble traditional books, where the focus is on the text content. This approach involves using a single font and structuring information into clearly formatted blocks. This allows for a focus on the essence of the message and improves user perception. Minimalistic design promotes faster page loading and improves navigation ease, which is an important factor for SEO. Grids used to organize text play a key role in the visual structure of content. They help highlight important elements by establishing clear boundaries and sections. Negative space filled with color facilitates better information retrieval and makes the text more engaging for the reader. Proper use of grids and color schemes can significantly improve the readability and perception of text, which is important for SEO. Effective structure and visual hierarchy attract attention and retain user interest, which in turn contributes to higher search engine rankings.

Studying current information and news is an important aspect of the modern world. Follow the latest events to stay up to date. Regularly reading the news helps you stay informed and make informed decisions. Use a variety of sources to gain a comprehensive understanding of current events. Consider specialized resources that offer in-depth analysis and expert opinions. This will not only broaden your horizons but also improve your critical thinking skills. Be an active consumer of information and share it with others.
A grid system is a structured approach to organizing visual content on pages. It is a system of horizontal and vertical lines that help designers align elements, creating a harmonious and balanced design. Using a grid system in design ensures uniformity and consistency, making it easier for users to perceive information.
Designers use grid systems to simplify the process of arranging elements such as text, images, and graphics. This allows for better organization of space, avoiding clutter and chaos. A modular grid also facilitates responsive design, ensuring content displays correctly across different devices and screen sizes.
Furthermore, modular grids help improve user experience by making it easier to navigate a page. A grid-based visual structure makes information more accessible and understandable, which in turn can lead to increased time spent on the site and higher conversion rates.
In conclusion, a modular grid is not just a tool for designers, but a key element in creating effective and engaging visual content that supports business goals.
Kinetic Typography
Animation in digital design is becoming increasingly accessible and popular. One of the most prominent trends is the use of moving letters and text that respond to user actions. This effect, although not new, continues to attract attention due to its ability to improve interaction and engage the audience. For example, text can change graphics when hovered over, creating a dynamic and interactive perception of the content. This technique not only makes the interface more lively but also helps retain users on the page, which has a positive impact on SEO. The use of animation helps highlight important elements and improve the overall user experience.
Trendy typography is trending towards combining 3D letters and animation. The mechanics of movement are ironically reminiscent of WordArt, popular in the early 2000s. This style creates unique visual solutions, drawing attention to the text and expanding the possibilities of design. Using such elements allows designers to experiment with form and dynamics, which makes typography more expressive and modern.

This method is used to convey information more expressively and effectively. Kinetic typography is used in various fields, such as commercials, music videos, educational videos, and social media. It helps attract viewers' attention, improving information comprehension and creating an emotional connection with the audience. Using kinetic typography in content increases its interactivity and memorability, making this tool especially valuable in modern digital marketing.
AI Morphism
Trend in font design: neural networks and artificial intelligence. Although neural networks cannot yet create legible character systems or lettering, AI technologies are increasingly penetrating the world of fonts. Designers use prompts to generate references, which allows them to find unexpected forms and transform them into unique typographic elements. This process opens up new possibilities for creative expression and expands the boundaries of contemporary design.
Neural networks open up new horizons in design, allowing us to move beyond traditional solutions. Their ability to combine form, texture, and color creates a high level of surrealism. This allows us to view text not simply as information, but as a physical object with which to experiment. The integration of neural network technologies into design opens up new avenues for creative expression and expands the boundaries of visual perception.
