Find out moreSince 2020, a volunteer movement focused on the restoration and preservation of the region's architectural heritage has been actively operating in the Kaliningrad Region. Participants in this movement are engaged in the improvement of abandoned churches and castles, and also popularize the concept of ruin aesthetics, which remains little known in the Russian hinterland. These initiatives not only promote the preservation of historical monuments but also draw attention to cultural heritage, encouraging locals and tourists to appreciate the region's unique architecture. Using rakes, shovels, and trimmers, "Ruin Guardians" transform abandoned spaces into landscaped areas. They not only green the area but also attract patrons and users willing to develop new functions for these aesthetically designed ruins. This movement not only restores nature but also inspires the creation of unique public spaces where everyone can feel part of the change. Subbotniks and voskrupniks (clean-up days) are held in Kaliningrad every week, attracting an average of 100 participants per event. Among them are both local residents and tourists from other regions interested in active recreation and seeking a unique experience during their visit. These events not only contribute to improving the urban environment, but also to forming a community of like-minded people, which makes participation in them especially attractive.

Editor-in-chief and coordinator of "Keepers of the Ruins" - a leading volunteer movement in the Kaliningrad region engaged in the preservation of cultural heritage. Our organization actively works on the restoration and protection of historical sites, attracting volunteers to participate in various projects. We strive to preserve unique architectural and historical monuments, contributing to the development of cultural tourism in the region. Join us in our mission to protect the heritage of the Kaliningrad region.
Identity and Affiliation
The "Guardians of the Ruins" logo, a heart on a tower, was created as a symbol of unity and protection. It reflects the main idea of the project—concern for the preservation of historical heritage and cultural values. The heart symbolizes a love of history and respect for the places we strive to preserve. The tower, in turn, represents strength and protection, emphasizing the importance of protecting the ruins and their significance for future generations. This logo has become not only a visual symbol but also a powerful message about the need to treat historical monuments with care.
Our team did not involve many specialists in the naming development. The name was proposed by founder Vasily Plitin in 2020. That same year, we launched a competition, publicly announcing on social media that we were changing our name from Ostpreussen Fans to "Keepers of the Ruins." We were looking for an original and memorable logo that would reflect the essence of our community.
When we received the logo from Kaliningrad designer Olga Dementieva, it became clear that it perfectly matched our concept. This design embodies the essence of our project and fully reflects our goals and values.

An interesting story creates the context for our identity. In the Kaliningrad region, two buildings embody a unique visual element in architecture - a vertical heart. These buildings are the Tarau Church in Vladimirovo and the Böttchersdorf Church in Sevskoye. Their architectural features not only visually unite them but also highlight the historical and cultural value of the region. Researching these sites helps better understand the architectural heritage of the Kaliningrad Region and its influence on its modern identity. Olga was not familiar with Sevskoye or Vladimirovo, but she managed to miraculously incorporate objects directly related to the movement's activities into the logo. It was in Vladimirovo that Vasily Plitin began organizing clean-up days around the church in 2019, and Sevskoye became one of the main objects under the care of the "Guardians" in 2023.

The "Keepers of the Ruins" logo is actively used by participants in the movement, who sticker it on their cars. This creates a sense of unity and belonging to the community. Photos with the caption "I'm driving down the road, and there's a keeper driving in front of me" regularly appear in our volunteer chat. Such moments highlight our shared goal and strengthen the bonds between participants. Having the logo on a car not only demonstrates support for the initiative but also draws attention to the importance of preserving cultural heritage.
Belonging to a community plays a significant role for many people. Regardless of their profession—be they builders, teachers, or representatives of other professions—many of them have a special identity as "keepers of the ruins." This designation emphasizes their connection to history and cultural heritage, as well as their desire to preserve and pass on knowledge of the past. Keepers of the ruins not only protect physical objects but also continue traditions, which makes their contribution to society especially valuable.

We have merch, and we are actively considering its systematic development. We strive to expand our range and improve the quality of our products to meet the needs of our customers. Stay tuned for updates and new arrivals.
We offer T-shirts and sweatshirts for volunteers, as well as branded accessories such as badges, notebooks, pencils, and postcards featuring objects from the "Gothic Ring." We also have a fun game called "Memo," where you can guess our churches, castles, and other famous landmarks. These products will help you become part of our team and support cultural heritage preservation initiatives.
We created a set of postcards called "Portals to Eternity" in collaboration with artist Romanas Borisovas. In the 1970s, he masterfully depicted ruins, and it is difficult to find an artist who so brilliantly conveys the aesthetics of destruction and the beauty of nature growing through the brickwork. His works inspire and make you think about time and eternity, making each postcard a unique work of art.

Neither Vasily nor I are professional designers, but we We have high standards for the project's visual design. This applies to photography, printed layouts, social media content, and souvenirs. Vasily serves as an intuitive art director, and my experience in the digital field and collaborating with designers gives me a well-developed sense of style and aesthetics. We strive to create attractive and high-quality visual materials that effectively present our project and attract the attention of the target audience.
Most recently, we collaborated with Keramostudio to create a unique souvenir plate depicting the landmarks of our "Gothic Ring" route. The designer went through 20 revisions and took into account all our wishes regarding the appearance of each building. This is a truly heroic effort that captures the beauty and uniqueness of our architectural heritage. This souvenir will be a great reminder of your trip and will help you remember the atmosphere of the "Gothic Ring."

Sweatshirts, plates, sets, postcards and Notebooks can be successfully placed on marketplaces. Proper setup and optimization of the sales process will help ensure a constant flow of orders and maintain curator activity. We have not yet implemented this system, which opens up opportunities for further development and growth.
We design posters and invitations according to established style guidelines and design principles. It is important to consider the target audience and the nature of the event to ensure a harmonious perception of the information. We strive for unity in design, which helps create a memorable visual image. When choosing fonts, color palettes, and graphic elements, we focus on current design trends and client requirements. This helps us create unique and attractive posters and invitations that effectively convey a message and attract attention.
The designer emphasized that a clean and concise design requires only an inner drive to create it. This approach is accessible to companies of any budget. It's important to rely on basic layout principles rather than relying on multiple fonts. Effective design is formed through simplicity and clarity, which ensures user understanding and improves interaction with the content.
Creating one high-quality poster is not a difficult task. However, developing 24 identically styled posters is a more complex process. In this case, a reliable template is needed that will maintain the integrity of the design, regardless of the words used, be it "Arnau" or "Saint Adalbert." The key is to develop a universal graphic solution that will maintain the unity of the visual style and convey the necessary information.
Efficient design creation without significant time investment requires a specialized team. In these cases, references may not be as important, but if you're looking for names of professionals to learn from, consider Gorbunov's Bureau and their "Advice," the early Lebedev Studio and their "Guidance," and Sergey Telidchenko and Zhenya from Uprock. These experts can be a reliable source of inspiration and useful information in the field of design.

Arches, crosses, and stars: creating an identity for a Lutheran church
Creating an identity for a Lutheran church is an important stage that helps express its uniqueness and values. Using symbols such as arches, crosses, and stars can significantly strengthen the visual identity. Arches symbolize openness and welcome, creating an atmosphere of friendliness. The cross, as the main symbol of Christianity, reflects the faith and spirituality of the community. Stars can represent hope and guidance.
When developing an identity, it is important to consider not only the symbolism but also the color palette, fonts, and visual elements that will harmoniously blend with the church architecture. The logo and other graphic materials should reflect the mission and vision of the congregation. An effective identity will not only attract new parishioners but also strengthen ties with existing church members.
Therefore, properly selected symbols and design elements will help create a long-lasting and memorable identity for the Lutheran Church, contributing to its development and strengthening the congregation.
We had no experience in incorporating East Prussian aesthetics, near-Gothic fonts, and yellowish postcard styles into our layouts. The Ruin Keepers project is focused on modern trends, and therefore it is inappropriate to use visual references from the 19th and 20th centuries. We strive to create relevant and modern solutions that meet today's needs.
Our design is characterized by its simplicity, making our direction easy to understand. Each layout includes key elements: the object, its historical name, the name of the settlement, and the date, eliminating unnecessary visual elements. This approach ensures clarity and informativeness, which makes the perception of information more convenient for users.

In some layouts, such as information stands, we draw inspiration from the team "Piktoriki," led by Maxim Popov and his renowned "Max Preuss Manufactures," is a true aesthetic discovery that brings joy to our city. Maxim masterfully creates meanings that reflect both Russian and East Prussian identities. He rethinks and adapts this visual language, which allows him to find new facets of old traditions.

Designers can also volunteer, and their contribution to various projects is significant. Volunteer design includes creating graphics, logos, websites, and other visual materials for charities and social initiatives. Designers' participation in such projects not only helps spread important ideas and messages but also allows them to develop their skills, gain experience, and build a portfolio. Volunteering in the design field fosters community development and inspires others to participate in good deeds. Thus, designers play an important role in volunteer movements, using their talents to support significant initiatives.
Our entire organizational team is made up exclusively of volunteers. We have not yet reached the level of financial motivation, as this would require developing, for example, tourist walks or introducing a recurring payment system.
What we manage to do is impossible for people working on a volunteer basis. We recognize that this model will eventually become ineffective, and the "Guardians" will need to move towards monetizing their services. This will ensure the sustainable development of the project and attract more resources to achieve its goals.
Ethics and Aesthetics
The aesthetics of ruins has a significant impact on local residents, shaping their perception of the environment and cultural heritage. It contributes to the creation of a unique atmosphere that attracts tourists and researchers. Such interest can contribute to the economic development of the region, increasing the flow of visitors and creating new jobs in the tourism and service sectors.
Furthermore, the aesthetics of ruins can inspire local residents with a sense of pride in their history and culture, promoting the preservation of traditions and architectural monuments. This can also serve as an impetus for community initiatives to restore and preserve historical sites, which in turn strengthens social ties among residents.
Thus, the aesthetics of ruins not only enrich the cultural landscape but also play an important role in the social and economic life of local communities.
A small number of local residents living in the villages where the churches are located participate in our cleanup days. They are usually surprised that we come without any payment. We explain that our initiative is voluntary and that we do not receive any money for it. We simply want to clean up the area, which for many years was a landfill.
Local residents sometimes share stories about what this place was like and the memories associated with it. They recall how a clubhouse where friends would gather was located here, or point to an old warehouse that once served as an important hub for their community. Particularly vivid memories are associated with the church, which a neighbor dismantled for its bricks. However, in most cases, people simply pass by, not paying attention to the rich history of the space around them.

Churches transformed into aesthetically attractive spaces with Grassy areas have a more positive impact on local residents than abandoned areas and litter. However, it's important to note that excessive attention to a property can evoke negative feelings among local residents. They may feel that life in the area was once more comfortable, but now the increased traffic creates inconvenience and disrupts their usual way of life. It's important to find a balance between developing public spaces and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere for residents.
Currently, our properties show no signs of overtourism, and this will likely remain the case for a long time. Local residents have not yet fully utilized the benefits of landscaped spaces, such as the opportunity to sell honey, apples, and mushrooms to tourists. We are confident that these opportunities will become more relevant and in demand in the future.

The profound impact on the consciousness of local residents is difficult to assess, but there are several sites where they have begun to actively participate in the care of the ruins. Previously, many of them believed they had no influence over these spaces, as they didn't consider them part of their property—they were located outside their homes and yards, belonging to the Russian Orthodox Church or, in the past, to the local administration. The ruins were perceived as a blind spot, and residents didn't feel responsible for clearing weeds or preventing pollution. This situation is gradually changing: an awareness of the importance of shared responsibility for preserving cultural heritage is stimulating new initiatives to improve abandoned sites. It's now clear that these spaces have reentered their lives, and they pass by them with a somewhat changed mood. This change in perception underscores the importance of the environment and its impact on people's emotional well-being. The revival of these spaces may contribute to a more positive backdrop for life and interaction. Local residents often ask, "Have you perhaps come to restore the church?" This is a question we encounter regularly. We explain that restoration requires significant funding, which we don't have and don't anticipate receiving in the near future. Moreover, restoring the church or converting it into a concert hall isn't economically feasible. Instead, we're focused on improving the site and striving for its conservation so it can become a historic park or an open-air cultural venue. This initially causes them disappointment, but they soon seem to accept the new reality.

Volunteer activity, especially in the form of field trips and practical work, brings many benefits to the volunteers themselves. Participation in such projects allows you to develop skills and gain new experience, which can be useful both in your personal and professional life. Volunteers learn to work in a team, develop leadership skills, and learn to accept responsibility.
Furthermore, such activities help broaden their horizons and introduce them to new cultures and people. Volunteers often encounter various life situations, which develops their emotional intelligence and empathy. This is also an excellent opportunity to form new acquaintances and friendships that can become an important part of life.
Participation in volunteer projects strengthens a sense of community and promotes personal growth. Volunteers derive satisfaction from being able to make a positive difference in the lives of others, which often becomes a source of inspiration and motivation. Ultimately, volunteer work not only enriches the lives of others but also transforms the volunteers themselves, making them more responsive and socially responsible.
The basis of motivation lies in the feeling of being involved in the positive changes happening around them. People often remain inactive for long periods of time, worrying about the state of their legacy. However, meeting like-minded people who are ready to take action and contribute to a better world can be a turning point. Their success inspires, and the immediate impact of your hard work brings incredible satisfaction. This feeling of engagement and achievement can be a powerful driver for further achievements and action.

The second important area is traveling and actively spending time with friends in exciting places. We prefer not just cleanup days, but real performances that make every meeting unforgettable and rich.
According to our data, about 60% of our community members are people who moved to Kaliningrad some time ago. These people join us to connect with a new place, find like-minded people, travel, and integrate into the local culture. They strive not only to develop the territory, but also to create their own network of acquaintances, which contributes to a deeper understanding and sense of connection with Kaliningrad.

The aesthetics of ruins attract attention with their mystery and depth. Destroyed buildings and abandoned places evoke feelings of nostalgia and admiration. They remind us of the past, of a time when these places were full of life and energy. Visually, ruins create a contrast between nature and art, showing how time affects human construction. This aesthetic piques the interest of artists, photographers, and architects, inspiring them to create new works. Furthermore, ruins often become places for exploration and self-reflection, allowing us to reflect on the cycles of life, time, and the changes that inevitably occur in our world. The aesthetics of ruins are also reflected in contemporary art and design, emphasizing the importance of preserving historical heritage and the memory of the past. The value of both the old and the new plays a significant role in the perception of cultural heritage. Ruins attract attention with their authenticity and genuineness, clearly revealing the layers of time. These historical monuments not only preserve traces of the past but also spark interest in how the world has changed over the centuries. Authentic ruins become a kind of bridge between the past and the present, allowing us to deeper understand history and culture.

A ruin is a significant element of the natural landscape. A once grand and beautiful building is now in ruins, but its centuries-old history lives on in our hearts. There's no magic here; rather, there's a sense of sadness, especially when compared to photographs taken before the destruction. This also engenders a sense of responsibility for the future of the structure. Our community recognizes this responsibility and strives to preserve this dominant feature to prevent its further deterioration. Preserving such cultural and historical sites is of great importance for future generations, and each of us can contribute to this important mission.

In recent years, many churches, castles, and ancient estates, including their ruins, have found new tenants or owners. These properties are becoming public spaces, cultural venues, and attractive areas. Such changes indicate positive trends that help prevent decline and recognize that we are in an era of historical heritage revival. We are active participants in this process, promoting its development and the preservation of cultural assets.
By continuing to engage in heritage preservation, we can significantly influence public opinion and draw attention to this important topic. Active public participation in the protection of cultural assets will help preserve them for future generations and ensure their protection. Heritage preservation is not only caring for the past but also an investment in the future, which requires joint efforts and active dialogue between all stakeholders.
Stories and People
During our visits to ruins, we often come across amazing finds. Each such investigation opens new horizons and allows us to understand history in a deeper way. We discover unique artifacts that shed light on the lives of people in the past, their culture and customs. These finds are not only impressive but also serve as important evidence of how civilization developed. Each discovery is a step towards unraveling the mysteries hidden in ancient walls and forgotten places.
We do not study the cultural layer of monuments or conduct excavations. Our main task is to collect surface materials, such as bricks and debris. The most interesting objects in our work are the shaped bricks used to create ribbed vaults, as well as bricks with characteristic markings. These finds allow us to better understand the architectural features and construction technologies of the past.
During the Order's rule, bricks were made and dried in the sun, resulting in the characteristic paw prints of animals and children's feet appearing on their surface. These unique traces provide historical evidence that provides a deeper understanding of the construction technologies of that time.

The activist movements that inspire the keepers of the ruins include many initiatives focused on preserving cultural heritage and protecting historical sites. One prominent example is the movement for the preservation of architectural heritage, which draws attention to the importance of protecting ancient buildings and monuments from destruction and inappropriate reconstruction.
Also worth mentioning are environmental activisms, which emphasize the importance of preserving not only cultural but also natural resources. These movements often join forces with the keepers of the ruins, striving to create sustainable and harmonious spaces where history and nature coexist.
Equally important is the movement for the rights of local communities who fight to preserve their historical territories and traditions. Inspired by these activist approaches, ruin guardians become not only protectors of architectural sites but also active participants in creating a more conscious and responsible society.
We are delighted to recognize the work of Uralruin from Yekaterinburg. Interestingly, our initiatives emerged almost simultaneously. Across the country, remarkable people have chosen their own paths to preserving and caring for ruins, underscoring the importance of cultural heritage and its protection.
Uralruin is actively involved in socio-cultural activities, organizing festivals and various events. Their visual language is impressive, which is not surprising, as the team consists of talented architects and designers. This combination allows them to create unique concepts and promote cultural initiatives, making their projects stand out from the crowd.

The "Protected Quarters" project in Nizhny Novgorod arose from the initiative of the regional branch of the Tom Sawyer Fest and is currently actively developing a block of historic houses in the city center. This is no longer just a grassroots initiative, but a full-fledged trilateral collaboration between business, the public, and government agencies. The project aims to preserve historical heritage and improve the urban environment, making it an important step in developing the cultural image of Nizhny Novgorod.
We closely follow the Tom Sawyer Fest community and the Conservation project, which aims to preserve Russian churches in rural communities and small towns. These initiatives play an important role in restoring cultural heritage and maintaining historic architecture, which contributes to the development of local communities and attracting interest in their unique history.

Antique doors are not just interior elements, but real works of art that can tell about the past and add uniqueness to any room. Restoring such doors is a process that requires professionalism and attention to detail. The craftsmen who perform this work possess in-depth knowledge of architectural history and materials science, which allows them to preserve the authenticity and character of the original.
Restoring antique doors is necessary not only for aesthetic pleasure but also for the preservation of cultural heritage. Each door has its own history, and restoration helps preserve it for future generations. Moreover, such doors can become a central element of the interior, giving the room a special atmosphere.
The restoration process includes several stages: stripping old paint, repairing damage, replacing fittings and, if necessary, restoring decorative elements. Using high-quality materials and technologies allows us not only to bring the doors back to life but also to extend their service life.
In conclusion, restoring antique doors is an important task that not only upholds tradition and history but also allows us to enjoy the unique beauty and functionality of these interior elements.
The main ambition of the guardians of the ruins is to preserve historical heritage and protect cultural artifacts. They strive not only to preserve but also to research ancient structures to understand their significance and impact on modern society. Ruin custodians work to pass on knowledge of the past to future generations, thereby providing a link between history and the present. An important aspect of their work is also raising public awareness of the protection of monuments and the need for their restoration.
We strive to create a large national fund that will focus on the preservation of neglected monuments and their restoration. Our goal is to attract resources to find investors and finance the conservation of historic sites. We are inspired by the example of the National Trust in England, which successfully carries out similar tasks. Our fund will contribute not only to the preservation of cultural heritage but also to drawing attention to the importance of protecting monuments, which will allow them to gain new life and become a valuable resource for society.
The initiative to create the fund was put forward by the famous philanthropist of Victorian England, Octavia Hill. Financial support for this endeavor was provided by the 1st Duke of Westminster. Most of the properties were transferred to the foundation not through purchase, but through the wills of their owners. This occurred because, during the 20th century, many aristocratic families lost their traditional sources of income and, unable to maintain their country estates in proper condition, decided to transfer their family estates to the National Trust. Thus, the foundation became an important institution promoting the preservation of historical heritage and architectural monuments, which is of great importance for the cultural development of society.

We strive to maintain the status of a social movement, as volunteerism and the involvement of ordinary people in heritage protection are key factors in our success. Public activism and citizen participation in the preservation of cultural heritage play a crucial role in achieving our goals.
The movement can develop internal expertise in monument management or collaborate with licensed restoration firms. We also strive to improve our skills in event management, tourism, and sociocultural activities, which will contribute to the continued attention paid to the ruins. This will not only preserve the cultural heritage, but also create new opportunities to attract tourists and increase interest in historical sites.

We regularly receive inquiries about the possibility of opening a franchise in other cities. At this time, we do not plan to expand our activities to the territory of "greater Russia." However, we are open to consultations, ready to share our experience, and organize collaborations with other projects with similar goals and values.
The Kaliningrad region represents a unique platform for our activities. Even the ruins, which we plan to leave in their natural state, may become the object of our attention decades from now. Unlike remote regions of Russia, where many objects are left unmaintained, in the Kaliningrad region we can see how the aesthetics of ruins interact with nature. Cleaning up abandoned places, creating lawns and landscaping may be relevant, but it is important to take into account that the support of such landscaping requires constant care, especially if these places are remote from large settlements.
