This spring, the Garage Museum launched the exhibition "Choosing Distance: Speculation, Fakes, and Forecasts in the Age of Corona." It was conceived last year during self-isolation, when the museum invited artists to rethink the experience of lockdown. Participants presented their predictions about possible versions of the future, past, and present, using the concept of speculation. This event highlights the relevance of artistic reflection on events related to the pandemic and invites viewers to reflect on the impact of the crisis on society and culture.

One of the 33 participants in the exhibition was the hybrid self-organization NONSNS. Maria Cheloyants, Gosha Golitsyn, and Ruslan Polanin have reimagined and remade four well-known television programs, bringing a unique artistic approach to them. Their work demonstrates creativity and originality, allowing viewers to see familiar formats in a new light. The first ironic show, "Let's Jam!", has been released. In it, a curator searches for the ideal artist for collaborative creative projects. He is assisted in this process by friends, matchmakers, and an astrologer. The show combines elements of humor and art, offering viewers a unique perspective on the creative process and artistic collaboration. This is an interesting project that will attract the attention of not only art lovers but also a wider audience seeking entertainment and inspiration.

“We “disenchant” familiar formats”

The idea of ​​creating the show occurred to us even before NONSNS appeared. However, when we decided to participate in the exhibition, we didn’t immediately think of it. At first, we offered “Garage” We were planning a large installation, but the museum curators, after reviewing our old videos, expressed a desire to see something performative to add a lively energy to our work. At that moment, we realized that our long-standing idea for the show fit perfectly with the concept. Moreover, Garage expressed their willingness to assist with production.

We could have staged a similar show in our studio, but at the Garage venue, the program looks more professional and engaging. This creates the effect of a television show, making it more compelling for viewers.

The show begins to reveal its essence through the text, the hosts, and the guests, who behave in an unconventional manner. At this point, it becomes obvious that this is the result of an artistic approach. Such an effect is only possible with a precise conveyance of the format. The level of production is critical for television, and it was thanks to the Garage that this was achieved.

To prepare for filming the show, we developed a script that could be called a "choreography of events." This script included elements of improvisation, as we defined the basic structure based on the key moments that needed to be voiced in the frame, but at the same time, we did not limit ourselves to strict frameworks. This approach allowed us to create a dynamic and lively show that holds the audience's attention and allows the artists to express their creativity.

During preparation, I repeatedly watched the program "Let's Get Married!" Although I sometimes watch it without preparation, it brings me a certain joy. I spent a full 40 minutes watching on the phrase "An expensive diamond requires an expensive setting." I was very excited, as I got the role of Guzeeva.

Thanks to her talent and perseverance, Maria has been able to gain recognition both in the professional community and among the general public. More than 30 people took part in the filming. The entire process took one day, lasting 15 hours.

Director of the show "Let's Jam!" has extensive experience working at the Rossiya TV channel, where he created popular programs such as "Blue Light" and "Saturday Night." He actively uses a creative approach and original ideas in his work, which allows him to attract and retain viewers' attention. The director's professionalism and creativity contribute to the successful development of entertainment content on Russian television.

I found myself in this project by chance. At a mutual friend's birthday party, I met the artists who told me about their plans to create a show. However, they had not yet decided on a format. When they learned that I worked as a director on television, they invited me to join the filming process.

What I observed on set was radically different from the intended script. This is what made the show unique and memorable.

In traditional television, any deviation from the predetermined plan often leads to negative consequences. However, in our case, the result was positive. We shattered traditional notions of television shows and, in fact, reimagined the very concept of television. As director, I departed from the usual working principles, and the artists participating in the project were free from established norms. As a result of this experiment, we created a unique work of contemporary art that opens up new horizons in television and artistic expression.

The first show received amazingly positive reviews. Viewers expressed a desire to see formats like "Fort Boyard," where participants can climb installations, and also to revisit popular programs such as "Guess the Melody" and "The Weakest Link." This demonstrates the audience's high interest in interactive and dynamic programming.

The second show, called "Let Them Create," will air in July. This event promises to be vibrant and memorable, captivating viewers. Don't miss the opportunity to be part of this creative process.

We create artistic projects based on the established languages ​​of popular culture, but our works often have an absurdist edge. We choose unconventional formats such as shows, reportages, commercials, and parties. Our approach involves thoroughly dissecting these formats and then reassembling them with distortions. Imagine reassembling an iron by adding spikes to its surface. Although it has lost its original functionality, in this new context it acquires unique meanings, revealing new ideas and perspectives. Our projects challenge viewers to rethink familiar things and see the world from a different perspective.

In the program "Let's Jam!" we explore the concept of interaction in art, emphasizing that everything is based on various connections. Curators and artists communicate not only professionally but also on a personal level. This human component often goes unnoticed in the art world. At the same time, formats like "Let's Get Married!" emphasize human relationships. By combining these two approaches, we create a unique effect that allows for a deeper understanding of the nature of interactions in art and life.

Understanding how these performances are created allows for a deeper appreciation of the work of artists and producers, as well as the distinction between reality and fiction on stage. It's important to remember that even the most believable shows can contain scripted elements, making them even more captivating and engaging.

Junior Curator of the Research Department of the Garage Museum and Co-curator of the exhibition. In this role, he/she is responsible for developing and implementing research programs aimed at deepening the understanding of contemporary art and cultural practices. He/she participates in the organization of exhibitions, oversees research projects, and collaborates with artists and researchers. The Junior Curator's work includes analyzing current trends in art and exploring new approaches to exhibition activities.

The "Choosing Distance" project began in the spring of 2020, when the world faced uncertainty and instability. With every day bringing new challenges and changing our familiar reality, we began our work recognizing the importance of adapting to new conditions. This project responded to the needs of the times, giving people the opportunity to find their way and adapt to changing circumstances.

In this situation, it was logical to turn to the unique resource and power of imagination inherent in art. This formed the basis for the open call for the exhibition and the selection of its participants. We sought to emphasize the importance of creativity and an experimental approach, which is reflected in the selection of works capable of evoking deep reflection and emotion in viewers.

The exhibition includes projects that present alternative versions of the world and explore the various structures and systems that exist within it.

NONSNS's work reflects a speculative and ironic attitude toward the surrounding world, including the professional environment of contemporary art and the criteria for success. This is expressed in their approach to content creation, which highlights the absurdity and contradictions inherent in contemporary artistic trends. NONSNS strives to provoke viewers to reflect on and rethink conventional ideas about significance and value in art, making their work relevant and memorable.

Masha, Gosha, and Ruslan create unique pirate interviews, film creative commercials, and organize disguised happenings. They also produce their own souvenir products. The NONSNS SHOW project, presented at the exhibition, exemplifies all these interesting initiatives. This creative approach allows them to stand out from the crowd, drawing attention to their unusual ideas and projects.

The NONSNS exhibition creates and publishes a YouTube show inspired by well-known television formats, featuring contemporary artists. Artists are placed in paradoxical situations that connect various cultural contexts, allowing them to explore and reveal the hidden mechanisms of these interactions. This approach opens new horizons for understanding art and its role in contemporary society, and also promotes dialogue between different cultures.

The space of the fantasy television studio, where NONSNS SHOW participants find themselves, is an arena for speculation. Media researcher Maeve Connelly emphasizes that contemporary artists often use the concept of the television studio as a platform for simulating predetermined behavioral norms and created media representations of relationships. This space becomes not only a stage for entertainment, but also a critical field for the analysis of social interaction and the representation of reality in the modern media context.
