I often passed by the sign of a medical clinic named "Eden." As someone interested in vocabulary, I was amazed how the brand's owners could choose such a beautiful word without considering its meaning. At first glance, "Eden" evokes something pleasant and attractive. However, in reality, Eden is the Garden of Eden from which the first humans were expelled, and only the righteous can return there after death, according to various religious interpretations. This raises questions about the appropriateness of using such a name for a medical institution whose primary goal is prolonging life and caring for health. Such a name could create the wrong impression about the clinic's philosophy and approach to treating patients.
Today, we won't delve into a discussion of logos and other elements of identity, but we will still touch on an important aspect of this issue. A logo consists of a graphic element and text, sometimes represented only by letters. These letters form words, or, as they are commonly called, brand names. It is brand names that we will focus on. A brand name plays a key role in the perception of a company and its products, as it serves as an identifier and helps create a unique image in the marketplace. Choosing the right brand name can significantly impact a business's success, as it must be memorable, easy to pronounce, and reflect the company's essence.
There are brand names that have a clear meaning to the educated consumer. For example, Coca-Cola, which can be deciphered as a combination of coca leaves and kola nuts with added water. Volkswagen, which literally means "people's car," is also a prime example. Skillbox can be interpreted as "skill box" or "skill set." Such names not only reflect the essence of the product, but also help create a connection with the target audience, making the brand more memorable and understandable.

There are brand names that have hidden meaning, sometimes even for educated people. For example, Pepsi was originally marketed as a remedy for dyspepsia, or indigestion. LEGO means "play well" in Danish. Adidas got its name from the company's founder, Adolf Dassler, shortened to Adi Dassler. These examples demonstrate how a brand name can reflect its history and concept, creating additional value for the consumer.

There are many acronyms that can be difficult to decipher, although they have clear meanings. For example, BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke, which translates as "Bavarian Motor Works." KFC stands for Kentucky Fried Chicken. Also worth mentioning is TSUM, which is an abbreviation for Central Department Store. Such abbreviations are widely used in various fields, including business and culture, and knowing their meanings can be useful in everyday life.

Brand names often need to reflect their essence and field of activity, meeting consumer expectations. Examples of such names might include "World of Fasteners" or "Planet of Plumbing," which seem to meet semantic requirements but sometimes prove overly banal. At the same time, there are names that not only fail to convey the essence of the business but also sound ridiculous, such as "Kirieshek" or "Putinki." It's important for a brand name to not only be memorable but also accurately reflect its specifics, helping to establish a connection with the target audience and increase market recognition. There are three key rules of brand building that are generally accepted. These principles help create a strong and memorable brand. Following these rules helps build trust and loyalty with consumers and improves market positioning. By applying these rules, companies can effectively develop their image and attract their target audience.
- It needs to be easy to read (preferably without any differences in meaning in different languages).
- It needs to be written beautifully (try to fit the letters Ы or Щ beautifully into a logo, and you'll be irresistibly tempted to switch to the Latin alphabet).
- And, as a result, it needs to be easy to remember.
Branding rules are not absolute, and this raises questions, especially regarding rule number "zero". There is an opinion that a brand name must have a certain meaning, otherwise it risks not living up to expectations and failing to achieve success in the market. However, meaningfulness does not always guarantee successful promotion. It is important to keep in mind that the perception of a brand name can vary depending on the target audience and cultural characteristics. Therefore, when choosing a name, you should focus not only on its meaning, but also on the emotional reaction it evokes in consumers.
This is a common misconception. Let me give you examples of three different types.
- The name makes sense, but the meaning is irrelevant to the company's business, the brand's essence and mission, and has nothing to do with it at all.
- The name makes sense, but it's somehow negative and nasty.
- The name has no meaning at all.
Apple, of course! Interestingly, the company's logo was originally not just an apple, but a specific Macintosh variety. The name Apple arose spontaneously because there were no other ideas that could better reflect the company's essence.
Starbucks is a coffee company named after Starbuck, a character in Herman Melville's novel Moby-Dick. The brand has become a symbol of coffee culture and cozy coffee shops, offering a wide range of drinks and treats. Starbucks not only popularizes coffee, but also creates a unique atmosphere for its customers, which makes it one of the most recognizable brands in the world.

Virgin, which means "maiden" or "virgin", appeared thanks to A certain girl's advice to Richard Branson. Interestingly, it doesn't specify what this has to do with the music industry and record labels. Branson, the founder of the Virgin Group, managed to create a successful brand that has become synonymous with innovation and quality in various fields, including music, aviation, and entertainment. Xiaomi is a name that raises questions about the correct pronunciation and spelling. When this brand first launched, I wondered how to pronounce and spell it correctly. Translated from Chinese, the name means "rice grain," which, at first glance, has no direct connection with electronics. However, this brand has become a symbol of innovative technology and affordable electronics on the global market. Xiaomi offers a wide range of products, including smartphones, smart devices, and accessories, making it one of the leading players in the industry.

Adobe is a name that is familiar to many, but it should be pronounced as "uh dow bee," not "adobe." Interestingly, the company's name comes from a stream that ran near the house of its founder. Translated, the word means "unbaked brick," which might seem an unusual choice for a body of water. However, the name has become a symbol of software innovation, including popular products like Photoshop and Illustrator. Burda is a magazine that has managed to win the hearts of Russian female consumers despite its unusual name. Many might think it's unintelligible, but it's actually just the surname of the German publisher, with the stress on the first syllable. Over time, readers have grown accustomed to the brand and appreciated its unique content. The magazine offers interesting materials on fashion, cooking and handicrafts, which makes it popular among women seeking self-expression and improving their lives.

Kodak is a brand that was founded by George Eastman, who had a particular fondness for the letter "K," coined the word, which hadn't existed before. Some commentators have claimed the name mimics the sound of a camera shutter, but in my opinion, it's more reminiscent of "click" or "zipper" than "Kodak." The brand has become synonymous with photography and innovation, leaving a significant mark on history.
Oreo is a word that has been given various unofficial interpretations, but it doesn't actually have a specific meaning. However, its sound and spelling are eye-catching and memorable, contributing to the brand's popularity.

Häagen-Dazs is a name that is difficult to pronounce, remember, and read the first time. This pseudo-Danish name, created by a Polish immigrant, has no connection to Denmark, as the Danish language does not contain the letter ä. The brand has become a symbol of premium ice cream, offering unique flavors and high-quality products.
There is a belief that some brand names, created in a creative impulse or without much thought, cannot be successful. However, this is far from the truth. Many such names become iconic and recognizable, demonstrating that uniqueness and originality can lead to success. Brands that seem random or do not follow generally accepted rules often stand out from the competition and attract consumer attention. The ability to create a memorable name, even if it is not carefully thought out, can play a key role in shaping a company's image and popularity. Ultimately, a brand's success depends not only on its name but also on the quality of its product and marketing strategies.
While individual names don't provide significant benefits for building a positive brand reputation, they also don't cause any noticeable harm. Over time, the word will become familiar to the audience, and the quality of the brand itself will remain the most important factor. If a product or service doesn't meet consumer expectations, neither naming nor design will save the situation. The key to a successful brand lies in its ability to meet customer needs and deliver a high level of quality.
Rules don't always work as we expect. This applies not only to general norms but also to specific rules, such as brand name creation. The only exception is the laws of physics, which are unchangeable. A socio-psychological rule states that people are able to adapt to various conditions, including "incorrect" brand names. This ability to adapt can have a significant impact on brand perception and popularity.
I open the newspaper and begin to read.
Yesterday, an accident occurred at the start of a round-the-world voyage, which perfectly illustrates the original name Captain Vrungel chose for his vessel. This situation highlights the unpredictability of sea voyages and the importance of preparation for them. The incident was an unexpected reminder that even the most carefully planned expeditions can face difficulties at the initial stage. Captain Vrungel and his crew will now have to overcome not only physical obstacles but also mental tests to continue their journey around the world.
I was a little confused and didn’t quite understand what was going on. Glancing at another newspaper and then at a third, I noticed a photograph. In the left corner is me, in the right is my first mate Lom, and in the middle is our magnificent yacht. Underneath was the caption: "Captain Vrungel and the yacht 'Trouble,' on which he is departing..."
I realized what had happened. I quickly headed to the stern and saw that two letters had indeed been knocked off—'P' and 'O'.
Scandal! Irreparable scandal! Nothing can be changed now, because journalists have long tongues. Nobody knows the captain of the 'Pobeda,' Vrungel, but the whole world already knew about my 'Trouble.' This event attracted attention and became a topic of discussion, emphasizing how quickly information spreads and how easy it is to become an object of public interest.
Soon, sad thoughts faded into the background. A light wind began to blow from the shore, the sails began to flutter, and I woke Lom to raise the anchor.
During our journey along the sea channel, shouts were heard from various ships.
I send you my greetings: "Have a safe voyage on the Beda!"
Unfortunately, the beautiful name had to be left in the past. We decided to move forward and use the name "Trouble".
