At the end of September 2024, the electronic group "Laud" presented their new album, "DanceVoiceSound 4," which was a continuation of the third part, released six years ago. The Ufa musicians delighted listeners with collaborations with Tosya Chaikina, Antokha MC, Cream Soda, as well as several fresh talents.

In honor of the release of the new release, the audio streaming service "Zvuk" introduced a Telegram bot that offers a test of knowledge of the "Laud" universe and holds a raffle for branded products. In addition, designer Artem Veretenko and calligrapher Dinara Tuysina created a unique font that combines dance, voice, and sound, especially for this project.

Lettering Basics: A Primer on the Art of Letter Combination

As I studied the project details, I immediately realized the task would be challenging. The client requested a font for use in a Telegram bot, which was intended to create individual user covers for participants, and the deadline was only one week.

In most cases, creating a full-fledged font takes several months, but in this case, the work had to be completed in just a few days.

The customer provided me with lettering and set the task of developing a full-fledged Cyrillic font based on this graphics. This work was too complex to be done alone; I needed an experienced colleague who could quickly grasp the characteristic features and style peculiarities of the font.

As a result, I decided to involve calligrapher Dinara Tuysin in cooperation.

We We started creating sketches for the keyword "NOBELFIK", drawing the letters by hand with a brush. This approach helped to preserve the natural contrasts and dynamics of the original lettering.

The initial version turned out to be quite bright and varied, but I came to the conclusion that it could be improved in the future.

Initial sketches and the first Layout

The next step was to create all the Cyrillic letters. We chose the Unicase approach, which means using the same forms for both uppercase and lowercase letters.

This allowed us to create a more universal font and save time. Image: Artem Veretenko

When creating each letter, we aimed to preserve the style and flexibility established by the lettering. Some letters were successfully executed on the first try, while others required additional refinement.

The main goal was to find a balance between the artistic style of the original lettering and its legibility. I wanted to preserve the expressiveness of the handwritten font, while ensuring consistency across all characters.

In addition to the main work on the box, I started creating alternative letterforms and ligatures. In the first stage, I used a neural network to study common Russian names and frequently occurring letter combinations, which allowed me to identify the most popular ligatures.

However, as we progressed, we realized that the task would require significantly more time than initially anticipated. Therefore, we decided to put off the tool and generation for later: for careful development and achieving a high-quality result, much more time is needed than was envisaged in the deadlines.

Although the deadlines were quite tight, paying attention to the technical details of the font was of paramount importance. I adjusted the spacing between letters and corrected the outlines of the characters to achieve uniformity in the graphic design.

Of course, it is difficult to develop the perfect font that would meet all the requirements in such a short time. Nevertheless, I made every effort to create the highest quality product possible under the circumstances.

Ultimately, the HiFi streaming service "Zvuk" acquired a functioning font, which was embedded in the Telegram bot. This innovation allowed users to create elegant inscriptions reminiscent of handwritten lettering.
