Kanye West, who changed his name to Ye in 2021, is not only an outstanding musician but also an influential figure in the fashion world. His unique concert images, collaborations with famous brands, and conceptual signature clothing collections confirm his status in the fashion industry. Over the course of his 20-year career, his approach to style and understanding of fashion have undergone significant changes. In this article, we will examine the evolution of his style and influence on the development of fashion culture.

Early 2000s. Finding His Own Style

Kanye West's individual approach to style was evident from the very beginning of his music career. While other rappers of the early 2000s favored oversized T-shirts and baggy jeans, Kanye drew inspiration from college fashion. He chose brightly colored polos, vests, and blazers, which helped him stand out from his peers and develop a unique image. This style not only reflected his musical ambitions but also became an important part of his creative identity, contributing to his success in the music industry and fashion.

2005–2010. His own brand and a change of image

In 2005, the musician began developing his clothing brand, Pastelle. Working with a team of designers, he created bomber jackets and hoodies with unique designs. The debut clothing collection was planned for release in 2009, but Kanye West unexpectedly suspended production that same year, and the collection was never officially completed. The Pastelle brand remains iconic in the fashion industry, embodying creativity and individuality.

Varsity jackets and polos gave way to tuxedos and 1970s-style suits in the musicians' wardrobes. In 2008, Kanye West released the video for the song "Stronger", in which he appeared for the first time in plastic Shutter Shade sunglasses. Although this accessory was not particularly practical, the musician's fans quickly picked up on the trend, and for some time the glasses became a popular style item.

Early 2010s. Masks, new relationships and shoe design

Masks became one of the noticeable features of the musician's image during this period. In particular, during the 2013 tour, Kanye West performed in unique models from Maison Margiela. These fabric masks, completely covered in glittering rhinestones and stones, hid his face, creating a mysterious and memorable image. The use of such accessories emphasized the individuality of the artist and attracted the attention of the audience, becoming a significant element of his stage image.

In 2012, Kanye West began a relationship with Kim Kardashian, and many experts believe that he had a significant influence on the change in her style. Instead of bandeau dresses and bright patterns, Kim began to prefer elegant monochrome outfits and exclusive pieces from famous designers. This transformation not only enhanced her image, but also made her a style icon in the fashion world.

In the first half of the 2010s, Kanye West actively developed his collaborations, creating a unique line of shoes. In 2009, he began collaborating with Nike, which was a significant event in the history of the brand, since for the first time the company chose an ambassador who was not related to sports. This collaboration opened new horizons for both the musician and the brand, drawing attention to sneakers that combined style and innovation.

As part of his collaboration with Nike, Kanye West created a unique series of Nike Air Yeezy sneakers. This high-top model features laces and a Velcro closure and was released in several colorways, including a model with a light-up sole. A few years later, new collections such as the Nike Air Yeezy II and Nike Air Yeezy Red October were released, further developing the concept of the original line and becoming even more popular among street fashion fans and collectors.

Kanye West's collaboration with The partnership with Adidas was a landmark event in the world of fashion and athletic footwear. Through this partnership, they created the iconic Yeezy Boost series of sneakers. Among them are the 750 model, with its high-top silhouette and monochrome design, and the 350 model, featuring a cushioned midsole and a full fabric upper. These sneakers quickly gained popularity thanks to their unique style and comfort, making them coveted by both fashion and street style enthusiasts. The Yeezy Boost has had a significant impact on the industry, setting new trends in athletic footwear design.Over time, Kanye West has developed increasingly innovative and futuristic designs. In 2020, the Adidas Yeezy Foam Runner hit the market—unique sneakers made from a foam polymer based on recycled algae. Also debuting that year were the Yeezy 450s, a fabric sneaker framed by a polymer "skeleton." These models have become iconic examples of sustainable design and a creative approach to footwear, which has attracted the attention of fashion critics and style lovers alike.

2015–2020. Yeezy Clothing

Musician Kanye West's style is undergoing changes again. He chooses multi-layered monochrome looks in black, nude, white, blue, and gray. Subtle shades are harmoniously combined with striking materials and details such as fur, leather, velvet and shiny elements. In his signature clothing collections, Kanye focuses on this unique style, which combines both elegance and boldness.

In 2015, Kanye West launched his fashion brand Yeezy, which quickly gained popularity in the world of streetwear. Initially, collections were created in collaboration with Adidas, which contributed to the successful launch and popularization of the line. However, in 2022, the partnership was terminated due to the musician's controversial and offensive statements, which negatively impacted the brand's reputation. The escalating situation surrounding Kanye West led to a reassessment of his image and influence in the fashion industry.

Kanye West primarily offers minimalist clothing in subdued colors such as gray, brown, black, khaki, and white. Instead of the heavy effect typical of luxury fashion, he uses distressed fabrics, raw edges, and patches. The style of his collections is at the intersection of sportswear and streetwear, which makes his products relevant and in demand.

2020s. Performance Time – in Your Own Style and Collections

In 2022, Kanye West presented a unique clothing collection in collaboration with Gap and Balenciaga. This creative partnership resulted in a line including hoodies, jackets, T-shirts, and cargo pants in dark colors. The collection was sold in an unusual format: the clothes were displayed in black trash bins in Los Angeles parking lots, attracting attention and sparking discussions about new approaches to fashion presentation.

Kanye West's stylistic choices often spark controversy and questions among fashion fans. He was recently spotted on the street wearing tight leggings and socks, which were later revealed to be sock shoes—knitted footwear with a reinforced sole. This trend was quickly picked up by other well-known brands, such as Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, and The Row, which released their own versions of the "sock" look. Thus, Kanye not only sets the tone for his individual style, but also influences fashion trends in general.

In the summer of 2023, Kanye West and his wife Bianca Censori appeared barefoot in public. Bianca's style was undoubtedly also influenced by Kanye, reflecting their shared approach to fashion. While Bianca prefers loose and informal pieces, Kanye opts for covered and baggy garments, emphasizing his unique design principles. Their joint appearances demonstrate not only their personal style but also a shared fashion philosophy that combines comfort and creativity.

On December 13, 2023, it was announced that Yeezy had appointed Russian designer Gosha Rubchinskiy as the head of design for Yeezy. The brand's official website already features the first collaborative pieces, and pre-orders for the new collection are available. This appointment underscores Yeezy's commitment to bringing fresh ideas and a unique vision to the fashion world.
