As September 1st approaches, the issue of education becomes relevant, and many begin to look for new opportunities for self-development. In this context, I have prepared a list of places where you can study lettering and working with fonts. I will also add my comments on each of the schools and courses to help you make a choice.

I have divided the materials into two sections: one dedicated to learning to work with ready-made letters, and the other to creating letters yourself. I have selected only high-quality resources, excluding those that seemed inappropriate or unprofessional to me.

Online Typography Courses

Every university program in graphic design necessarily includes a section, course, or at least several hours devoted to typography. Educational institutions such as Moscow State University, HSE, Britanka, Synergy, and many others offer a comprehensive education that requires a significant time investment. Additionally, there are shortened continuing professional education programs that allow you to quickly master the basics of typography and improve your design skills. Among online platforms, I recommend the following options. Natasha Agapova's course, "Typography: Form and Content," offers a deep dive into the fundamentals of layout. Participants will explore key aspects of font selection, their harmonious combination, and the interaction of text and images. A deeper understanding of typography will help you create aesthetically pleasing and functional designs, which is essential for the successful design of web pages and printed materials. Enroll in the course and improve your typography skills to enhance the quality of your design projects. This portal features several of my courses, which you can find in the library. In the next section, I will talk about these courses in more detail.

A Guide to Typography Basics: Tips for Beginners and Non-Designers

Typography is the art and science of text arrangement. It plays a key role in creating visually appealing content and improving readability. For those just starting out in design or working with text, it's important to understand the basic principles of typography.

The first thing to consider is font selection. A good font should not only be aesthetically pleasing but also easy to read. There are many font styles, including serif and sans-serif. Serif fonts are more often used for printed materials, while sans-serif fonts are ideal for web design.

The second important aspect is text hierarchy. Use different font sizes, styles, and colors to highlight headings, subheadings, and body text. This will help readers quickly navigate the content and highlight key points.

Also, consider line spacing and letter spacing. Proper spacing helps improve readability and creates a more harmonious look for the text. Too dense or, conversely, sparse spacing can distract from the main content.

Color palette is another important element of typography. Choose contrasting colors for text and background to ensure maximum visibility. Remember that too bright colors can be distracting, so it is better to use calm and neutral shades.

Finally, test your solutions on different devices and in different browsers. What looks good on one screen may look different on another. Make sure your text is always readable and attractive to your audience.

Finally, the basics of typography are important for anyone who works with text. Understanding these principles will help you create high-quality and attractive content that will be easy for readers to digest.
