Her brand is a unique club inhabited by amazing creatures and where flowers bloom on sweatshirts. Her work harmoniously combines digital illustration with watercolor, embroidery, and assemblage, creating a unique style and atmosphere.

We met with Karina for a conversation.

An experienced artist and illustrator, Karina Kino previously held the position of lead designer at Disney Russia. She is currently the founder of the Karina Kino designer clothing brand and has created her own illustration school, "Dobraya Shkola." She is also the author of the book "An Artist's Handbook," in which she shares her knowledge and experience in the fields of art and illustration.

I began illustrating in childhood, when I became interested in drawing and creating my first works of art. Gradually, this passion developed into a more serious pursuit, and I began exploring various illustration techniques and styles. Participating in art courses and master classes helped me develop my skills and find my unique style. Gradually, illustration became not only a hobby but also a professional activity, allowing me to express my ideas and emotions through visual art. Every new work is an opportunity for me to experiment and grow as an artist.

I've always been passionate about drawing. As a child, I created all sorts of characters and animals, and I can't imagine my life without this passion. So I decided to continue my education at art school and then entered university. Although I studied graphic design at the Stroganovka, where our department resembled the Bauhaus, the program included a lot of academic drawing and painting. These classes confused me, as I didn't understand their essence and didn't feel comfortable in them. It was a difficult period in my life.

How did you cope with this situation?

During my studies, I actively attended parties and communicated with DJs, including members of Flammable Beats. I've always been fascinated by subcultures, and meeting graffiti artists opened my eyes to the idea that art can be vibrant and fun. These encounters inspired me to explore creative expressions and immerse myself in an atmosphere where creativity and fun go hand in hand. These artists now have a well-established reputation and exhibit in galleries, although 20 years ago they were part of the underground. I began drawing characters and illustrating alongside my studies. At one of the parties, I met representatives of Jalouse magazine, who offered me a collaboration. At that moment I was only seventeen years old, and now this memory seems funny.

At that time, many illustrators actively worked with glossy magazines. I began collaborating with Jalouse magazine, and then with Yes!. My style, inspired by graffiti artists, was reflected in the illustrations I created for these magazines.

Artists often exhibit a rebellious spirit and nonconformism—this is a natural phenomenon. Mothers of future artists should remember that if their teenager is different from their peers, this is usually a positive sign. Uniqueness and unconventional thinking are important qualities for creative individuals. Support your children in their desire to express themselves, because this can be the foundation of their success in the art world.

At that time, social media didn't exist, but thanks to active communication, I quickly made connections and successfully entered the glossy magazine industry. My style at that time was distinguished by underground elements. I traveled a lot, held exhibitions in Germany and worked with managers in Berlin. The Western cultural environment had a significant influence on me. This path has become my foundation, and I continue to develop in this field to this day.

The most challenging aspect of being a commercial illustrator is the need to balance creative expression with client demands. A commercial illustrator must not only create original and engaging images but also consider clients' wishes, brand standards, and target audiences. This can require significant effort in adapting style and concept, which sometimes leads to a conflict between personal artistic vision and commercial expectations.

Furthermore, working with tight deadlines and the need to constantly generate new ideas can cause stress and burnout. Effective time and resource management are becoming critical to a successful career in this field. Furthermore, commercial illustrators often have to adapt to rapidly changing trends and technologies, which requires constant learning and skill development. Thus, the main difficulties in the work of a commercial illustrator are the combination of creative challenges and the need to meet commercial requirements.

I came to the world of the glossy industry as an independent artist and a representative of the subculture. I soon found myself trapped in this industry: commissions began pouring in, and as a student, I accepted everything. This led me to a vicious cycle: it seemed that more work would lead to a higher income. However, this approach prevents me from reaching a new level of development. I create commissioned illustrations, but as a result, I don't develop my own unique brand. Without additional effort, I risk becoming one of many faceless illustrators, losing the opportunity to stand out from the competition. The client isn't interested in your development as an artist; you exist solely within the "client-illustrator" relationship. As my own client, I understand that many people want to pay the minimum amount but expect a high-quality product. This is a completely commercial approach, focused on achieving results without regard for the artist's creative growth. While working on a project for the "Tvoye" brand, I created 300 prints in a month. However, this quantity didn't allow me to pay sufficient attention to every detail. This intense workload led me to an existential crisis: I realized I was only tackling superficial tasks, while I always valued deeper development and self-improvement. Ultimately, I decided to put my work on hold, telling myself, "I won't take on any more new projects. I'm striving for a new level of professionalism and want to focus on creating my own product."

Around the time I got married, I built up a financial buffer. This period became an important stage in my life, when financial stability allowed me to feel more confident and freer in my decisions.

You gained fame for your unique botanical prints. How did you come to choose this theme in your work?

I decided to take a break and entered the Faculty of Horticulture at Moscow State University. This was a bold move, as studying in this field wasn't directly related to my passion for drawing. However, the experience significantly enriched my knowledge and skills. For a year, I studied at Moscow State University among botany students, finding myself in a completely different environment, unrelated to illustration. This experience opened new horizons for me: I studied plant diseases and, in the process, discovered that I significantly improved my drawing skills. This is especially interesting, since in art schools and classical universities, education is focused on the individual, and the educational process practically lacks topics related to the depiction of plants and animals.

Having understood oneself anew, including through education Gardening, I decided to start from scratch. Everything I'd done before hadn't yielded results, and I had no portfolio. Now that I'm free of that burden, I'm ready to move on. I left some projects and continued working with Disney, but I realized that to realize my dreams, I needed to become my own client. This is a new stage in my life, which will open up opportunities for creating unique projects.

Have you decided to start your own business?

To create my brand, I had to invest all my savings and start actively working. I created an Instagram account from scratch, which quickly attracted attention and helped me find my first clients. Working in the West, I noticed that there were many competing illustrators, while in Russia, it's much easier to stand out. If you're a self-employed client, you have the opportunity to implement unconventional projects. I understand that in business, there's often a requirement to follow a certain format—the goal is to create a product that's guaranteed to sell. However, for an artist, the main goal is self-development. This is, to some extent, a spiritual path that goes beyond money. If you focus on profit from your creativity, there's a risk that the result will be derivative and unoriginal. Modern society is highly commercialized, which affects the perception of art. Participants in my courses often ask, "How can I make money from art? How can I make it profitable?" I explain that art requires significant investment and shouldn't be viewed solely as a means of earning money. While technical illustrator careers are certainly possible, this approach won't yield significant income.

If you have the drive, strength, and desire to focus solely on aesthetics, the rewards will ultimately be much greater. However, it's important to understand that instant results aren't to be expected. Art is a journey that requires time and patience, but it's in this process that true value and satisfaction lie.

Choosing a theme and style for illustration is an important step for any artist or designer. A well-chosen theme helps create a unique visual language that reflects your ideas and feelings. When choosing a theme, it's important to consider your interests and what inspires you. This could be nature, urban life, abstraction, or something else.

Illustration style also plays a key role. It determines how your work is perceived by viewers. Different styles can convey different emotions and moods. For example, minimalism is suitable for creating clean and uncluttered images, while a bright and vibrant illustration can convey dynamism and energy.

It's important not only to choose a theme and style, but also to stay true to yourself. Sincerity in creativity attracts attention and allows you to connect with your audience. Experiment with different styles and themes, but try to maintain your own individuality. This will help you develop as an illustrator and find your audience.

Absolutely, this is necessary. Without it, it's difficult to consider yourself an illustrator. Your style and identity in the world of illustration must be genuine and reflect your true essence. Since childhood, I've been fascinated by animals and nature, inspired by the works of Gerald Durrell and Jack London. My love of nature and animals has become the foundation for my creative path and the development of a unique style that allows me to express my ideas and feelings through illustration.

Learning gardening is a great example of how a genuine passion for plants can develop into a deep understanding of botany. This process begins with a personal interest that gradually develops into a serious hobby or even a profession. If you're looking for advice in this area, I highly recommend listening to your inner voice and discovering your true interests. Diving into the world of plants not only enriches your knowledge, but also brings pleasure, allowing you to become a part of nature.

To become an illustrator with a unique style, it is important to first understand yourself and allow yourself to be authentic. You should not strive to be a copy of others; You need to be true to yourself. Understanding who you really are is the key to expressing yourself in illustration. You might be obsessed with bats or feel like Wednesday, but you're forced to conform to accepted standards. If you're not living your true life, your work won't be authentic. By freeing yourself from external expectations, you can create illustrations that reflect your individuality and inner world. Clients sense the difference: if you create a print with soul and sincerity, they're willing to buy it. If the work is done without enthusiasm, just for the paycheck, the result is uninteresting. Creativity is a means of self-expression, a language through which you communicate with the world. If you don't have an idea or a message to convey, creativity becomes empty.

For example, if you compare working in Procreate to traditional watercolor, a watercolor painting can take two days to complete, while in Procreate, the process takes only 15 minutes. This allows artists to use their time more efficiently and experiment with ideas without significant resource expenditure.

Artificial intelligence is already being used to create book covers, highlighting the growing role of digitalization in various industries. In an increasingly automated world, it's important to identify unique aspects beyond the capabilities of neural networks. This not only preserves creative individuality but also develops skills and ideas that are beyond the capabilities of machines.

Hand-made illustration techniques are more striking, interesting, and original than their digital counterparts. Digital illustrations often share similar characteristics, which reduces their uniqueness. Choosing an authentic analog style can significantly increase your chances of recognition and standing out from the competition. Using craft methods allows you to create a unique visual language that will attract your audience and leave a lasting impression.

There is currently a noticeable trend among Western artists who make their own paints, including the use of natural ingredients such as turnips. Art Nouveau, which emerged in the late 19th century, is characterized by smooth forms and harmonious colors. It often combines natural motifs with fantastical elements, making it ideal for fairy tale illustrations. Modernist illustrations are capable of conveying complex emotions and ideas, creating a unique interpretation of the fairy tale world. Modernism, in turn, brings experimental approaches and new techniques to illustration. This style often departs from traditional forms and can utilize abstraction, allowing authors to create unique visual narratives that complement the plot. When creating clothing print collections, it's important to draw on current trends. Researching fashion trends helps us understand which colors, patterns, and styles will be popular among consumers. Taking these trends into account helps us create unique and sought-after designs that will attract customers and meet their expectations. The use of modern trends in prints contributes not only to aesthetic appeal, but also to successful sales.

Considering the peculiarities of the Russian climate and customer preferences, we can highlight key points in choosing prints for clothing by season. In winter, dark prints are trendy; they not only enhance style but also create a cozy look during the colder months. In spring, preference should be given to light prints, which reflect the renewal of nature and add bright accents to an everyday wardrobe. Choosing the right prints depending on the season will help emphasize your individuality and stay in line with fashion trends. I've stopped relying on external trends. There are forecasting websites that cost a significant amount of money to access. For example, Disney used such resources to determine trends for the next season. Unlike them, I rely on my inner feelings and observations. My personal trend is wildflowers, which I've been studying for several seasons now. Are there effective methods for protecting my prints from theft? Indeed, image and design theft online is a common problem. To protect your work, it's important to use several approaches. First, post your prints with watermarks or in low resolution, which will make them difficult to use without your permission. Secondly, consider registering your designs as copyright, which will give you legal protection. It's also helpful to track the use of your work online using dedicated services. And don't forget to actively promote your prints and build your personal brand, which will help differentiate you from competitors and reduce the risk of theft. In my experience, this is almost impossible to change. You have to accept it. Initially, I tried to fight it, hiring lawyers, but I soon realized that this process requires significant effort and financial investment. Ultimately, it's much easier to create something new.

Theft can be classified into two main types. The first type is theft of an original design, when printing companies, without a corresponding reputation, use the sketch you provided without your consent. This constitutes a clear copyright infringement and is unacceptable behavior. Such cases highlight the importance of choosing reliable and trusted printing partners to avoid leaking your ideas and stealing your intellectual property.

Another scenario involves people not using my print from a file, but creating very similar works. This is controversial—it's not outright theft, but can be considered copying that borders on reproducing the original. It's important to understand that such actions can negatively impact copyright and intellectual property. Creating unique content and respecting the work of other artists should be the main principles in the creative environment.

I do not interfere in this process, since this happens with my students too. It is natural to feel the influence of the teacher after completing the course. Even Leonardo da Vinci had students who adopted his style. When you start teaching, your style isn't exclusive to you—it becomes shared and passed on to others.

I created The Kind School out of a desire to provide a supportive and understanding space for children and parents. In today's world, educational institutions often focus on academic success, neglecting the importance of emotional and social development. The Kind School offers not only a quality education but also an atmosphere conducive to developing self-confidence and mutual support. I believe that every child is unique and deserves the opportunity to discover their talents in a comfortable and safe environment. My goal is to create a community where students can learn, explore, and grow together, supporting each other along the way.

In my twenties, I was able to draw tirelessly, but now that I have two children, sleepless nights are no longer an option, and I have very little time for creativity. Nevertheless, I realize that by teaching others, I pass on my knowledge and skills. In this process, they become a kind of extension of me, and together we create amazing works of art that sometimes surpass my own.

Now you don't have to grow hundreds of apples yourself, because new trees can produce thousands. This process symbolizes growth and development, allowing you to pass on your best qualities to the next generation. In this way, you create a powerful cycle of fertility that promotes prosperity and expansion.

Watching this network grow, you realize that time is a limited resource. You never know how much is left, so it's important to use every minute as efficiently as possible. The future is unpredictable, and perhaps something unexpected will happen tomorrow. I realize that sharing information is becoming even more important than being creative.

Our school has creative chats, which are a valuable resource for knowledge sharing. Although it was originally intended for participants to learn from me, I found that I was also learning from my colleagues. These chats actively share advice and experiences, creating a unique collaborative atmosphere. This enrichment of knowledge and inspiration has become a powerful stimulus for my professional growth.

By filming lessons, I develop significantly as an artist. I test new materials, study literature, and prepare for lectures, which inspires me to come up with new creative ideas. Many of my popular works were created specifically for video lessons, as the process of learning and creating content is much more rewarding than simply drawing alone. During the school's operation, I have achieved significant progress and growth in my art.

Community plays an important role in the lives of many people. It is a space where you can share experiences, receive support, and find like-minded people. Participation in the community contributes to the development of skills and knowledge and also allows you to expand your social connections. If being part of an active community is important to you, it can greatly enrich your life and help you achieve your personal and professional goals.

For historical reasons, my friends are rappers and graffiti artists. My own community is formed around my school.

There are certainly various groups and associations in the Russian art community, but I am not familiar with them and do not participate in their activities. I previously tried to participate in markets, but I experienced panic attacks. This is a quirk of my psyche, and many artists probably face similar difficulties. Therefore, creating a community for us can be a difficult and not always comfortable process.

I primarily communicate with clients and students. In my communications, I do not aim to collect a lot of likes. The most important thing for me is the knowledge I possess and the opportunity to share it with others.
