What is trust in the context of web interfaces
Trust, from a psychological perspective, is a complex cognitive phenomenon that is difficult to define unambiguously. In a general sense, trust can be characterized as the confidence that another party will act predictably and reliably. This process involves the assessment of risks and expectations, making it an important aspect of interpersonal relationships and social dynamics. Understanding trust is important not only in personal relationships but also in business, where it plays a key role in forming partnerships and customer connections. Building and maintaining trust improves communication and increases the effectiveness of interactions.
In web interfaces, user trust is most often assessed using indirect metrics. For example, an important indicator is the frequency of clicks on the "buy" button. This metric allows us to assess the extent to which users trust the interface and are willing to make purchases. A high click rate on this button may indicate a positive perception of the interface and user confidence in the security of their actions. Thus, analyzing indirect metrics, such as clicks on key elements, helps better understand the level of user trust in a web interface and identify areas for improvement.
Trust is a key aspect of interactions between users and organizations, differing from reputation and liking. The main difference between trust and trust is the presence of vulnerability and risk. A user may face the consequences of negative actions on the part of another party in whom they trust or, conversely, refuse to trust. Building trust requires attention to security and transparency, which is especially important in today's digital world. A user who likes or shares a post may be confident in the veracity of the information, while their followers may know it is fake. In such a situation, the user's reputation is at risk. This is especially important in the context of financial news: if a user makes investment decisions based on information from the Panorama news agency, they risk financial losses. The need to critically evaluate information sources is becoming a pressing task for anyone seeking to avoid such risks.
What are social cues?
There are four types of cues in an interface. These elements or attributes, located outside the content, can significantly influence the level of user trust. Correct use of these cues helps create a more intuitive and reliable interaction with the interface, which, in turn, has a positive impact on user experience and satisfaction.
Atmospheric design cues play a key role in creating visual perception. Colors and fonts are the main elements that create the overall atmosphere and mood. The correct choice of color palette helps convey emotions and accents, and fonts ensure readability and style. It is important to consider these aspects when developing a design to achieve harmony and appeal.
Structural usability cues include the organization of information on the page, the distribution of headings, and the optimization of navigation. Proper content structure helps users easily find the information they need, improves website usability, and enhances the user experience. Effective navigation and logically arranged sections facilitate faster navigation and increase the likelihood of returning users. Proper information structure also has a positive impact on SEO, as search engines consider ease of navigation and data organization when ranking pages.
Thirdly, it is important to consider content cues related to a consistent style, the structure of the news text, and the harmonious combination of text and images. The final type is social interface cues. These are elements that make the user feel like they're interacting with a real person, not a soulless system. Such elements contribute to a more human and emotional experience, improving engagement and increasing user satisfaction.
In news interfaces, we identified 12 of the most common types of cues. These cues play a key role in improving the user experience and simplifying content navigation. Each of these categories helps users quickly find the information they need and navigate the news flow.

During the discussion of various interfaces, the question arose of whether the user would want to integrate similar functionality in their news aggregator. The results showed that social cues, with the exception of chatbots, have a positive effect on information perception. Users are more likely to rate trust highly and express a willingness to share content on their media outlets.
The Most Influential and Least Influential Social Cues
Cues related to social media had the greatest impact on content perception. These include links to media outlets' social media pages, attribution to the author or editor of the article, the number of reposts, the ability to repost to social media, and links to Yandex and Google News. These elements not only enhance trust in the information but also promote its dissemination, which in turn increases the content's visibility in search engines. Proper integration of social signals into content can significantly improve SEO results and attract more visitors to the site.
When users see social elements on a page, they sense that the media outlet is part of a broader context. Communication between the user and the news interface often appears one-way, as the interface is limited in its responsiveness. In contrast, social media offers the opportunity for multi-way communication. For example, through social platforms, users can send messages to media outlets and receive responses. A large number of media outlet followers on social media also creates a sense of trust in the source of information.
The chatbot icon and the option to view comments without adding them demonstrated the worst results. This is related to the situational normality hypothesis, according to which users tend to trust interface elements that operate in a familiar way. For example, the ability to read a comment but the lack of an option to add one may evoke distrust. It is also worth noting that the use of Jivo chat on commercial websites is justified, while for news resources this solution seems inappropriate.
How colors affect trust in a news interface
When choosing a color for a commercial website, A/B testing can be used, which simplifies the process. However, when it comes to scientific research, many complexities and nuances arise that require more in-depth analysis. It is important to consider not only visual aspects, but also the psycho-emotional perception of color by the target audience, as well as the impact of color solutions on user behavior. The correct choice of color can significantly increase conversion and improve the user experience, which is especially critical for commercial projects.

In the first part of our study, we analyzed all the colors of the rainbow, excluding light blue due to its proximity to blue. In our study, we found that blue is not the most trustworthy color. Black and white, green, and gray color schemes showed the best results, inspiring greater trust in the audience.

Users may experience discomfort when interacting with a purely blue interface, which may be due to its unfamiliarity. It is also possible that the chosen shade of blue does not match their aesthetic preferences.
The issue of hue variability is an important aspect in the study of color. We consider discrete quantities, such as a specific hue, which can be expressed through RGB or HEX code. However, color is a continuous scale, and it is still unclear how to properly approach it. Understanding this scale is necessary for a deeper analysis and use of color in various fields, such as design, art, and technology.
The black and white scheme proved to be the most popular in the study due to its simplicity and versatility. It is the only bichromatic scheme, which makes it particularly noticeable. Black and white designs are often used on news websites, as they focus on the content and make the information easier to perceive.
It is difficult to determine what exactly the color gray symbolizes. Perhaps its neutrality plays a key role, as it lacks a strong emotional coloring or connotation. As a result, websites designed in gray tones don't create the impression that users need to be emotionally engaged. According to our semantic data obtained from open-ended questions, many respondents emphasize the importance of neutrality and impartiality in information, making gray an excellent choice for conveying this message. In contrast, green is a cool color, which also influences how information is perceived.

Other important parameters
The subjects were divided into three groups. One group was told that all news presented would be fake, another that all news was real, and a third group was not warned about the nature of the news.
Prior belief significantly influences the level of trust in an interface, but this only occurs if the interface's color scheme itself evokes trust. A color palette can significantly improve user perception, which in turn contributes to a more positive experience with the product.
Users who encountered black and white, gray, or green websites demonstrated a significant influence of prior beliefs associated with a trustworthy color scheme. When we informed the user that all news was true, their rating increased. If we asserted that all news was fake, the rating decreased.
If the user initially encounters a red or yellow color scheme, which in themselves do not inspire trust, there is no statistically significant effect of prior belief. This indicates that the perception of the color scheme can significantly influence the user's level of trust in information or a product.

Therefore, it's important to focus on design, content, and functionality to create a unique atmosphere that will foster a stronger connection with your audience.
Colors that inspire trust are often associated with feelings of calm, relaxation, and neutrality. While such shades may be more typical for banking institutions, their use on websites dedicated to products for mothers and babies can also be appropriate. Choosing a color palette that creates an atmosphere of trust will help emphasize the reliability and quality of the products offered, which is especially important to the target audience. Properly selected colors can not only attract attention but also create a comfortable perception of information, which contributes to increased customer loyalty.
It is plausible to argue that a website should have human-like characteristics. This is important for creating an atmosphere of trust and improving user interaction.
