In 2023, CreativePeople celebrates its 20th anniversary. The company's founders and team share their memories and achievements over two decades of work.

  • how it all started with a student party;
  • what designers did when they didn't know the word "identity";
  • how to spend all your money, decide it's time to close your business, and not do it;
  • how to survive the economic crisis in Medvedkovo;
  • why systems management is also a whale;
  • what experiments are more useful than despair;
  • how not to get upset if creativity on the web is a thing of the past;
  • what is collapse, when there is a niche and a strategy;
  • why is it worth trying at all.

CreativePeople is a digital and design agency with over 20 years of experience. We specialize in design in all its forms, offering comprehensive solutions for our clients. Our team collaborates with major brands and helps develop their identity from scratch, ensuring high quality and an innovative approach to each project.

2003

In the spring of 2003, students at the Higher School of Economics, lawyer Alexander Kovalsky and political scientist Sergey Kalyuzhny, decided to start a joint venture. They had experience working on protodesign, as they were members of the university student council and were involved in creating identities and posters for various events. This previous work became the foundation for their future business, allowing them to effectively combine their skills and creative approach.

The project for which the friends initially united was quickly canceled, leaving them in a rented office with an obligation to pay. This situation became the impetus for the creation of CreativePeople, a new initiative aimed at developing creative solutions and innovative ideas.

Twenty years ago, the design and digital technology market in Russia was just beginning to develop. Clients had to be explained the internet, the opportunities it offered, and convinced to create their own websites. Our company, made up of friends, was among the first to witness the emergence of Russian web design, creative digital solutions, and what later became known as corporate website design. This period laid the foundation for the further development and implementation of modern approaches to web design, which play a key role in business today.

The CreativePeople name was founded in 2003. Alexander, Sergey, and their friends were often called "creative guys," a somewhat dismissive term reflecting a lack of understanding for their choice of unconventional hobbies over traditional and predictable careers in fields such as law. Thus, the name stuck—"Creative People," or CreativePeople in its international format.

In the summer of that year, the friends registered the domain cpeople.ru, which was the final step in establishing the company. This domain has become an important part of their online presence and has helped improve brand visibility online.

The initial projects included creating a website for office neighbors, developing an information system for lawyers, and creating websites for an advertising agency and an icon-painting workshop. Logos and packaging for kitchen utensils were also designed for friends. Orders came from acquaintances, a landlord, and early partners who offered graphic design and IT services but did not want to develop websites themselves.

In the fall of 2004, after a year and a half, Sergey Prokofiev joined the team, who later became the Director of Development.

Many stories circulated about the Creative People office at the university. Sergei Kalyuzhny, the chairman of the student council, worked in this space, and it was here that all the interesting students flocked to realize their ideas. I also began to appear in this office often. At first, I didn't interact with Kovalsky, as he came to work during the day, and I arrived late at night and sat at his computer. Kalyuzhny was busy with his own affairs, and I could immerse myself in my favorite computer games, such as "Knights of the Old Republic," which had just been released. Occasionally, I was also assigned work tasks, such as filling various websites with content. This experience helped me develop skills in web development and content management.

Later, when I began looking for work, I realized that I was already partially employed.

His works, distinguished by their unique style and innovative approaches, continue to inspire musicians and listeners around the world. Prokofiev was born in 1891 in Russia and demonstrated outstanding musical talent from an early age. He studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he received a fundamental musical education.

After the 1917 Revolution, Prokofiev lived abroad, but in 1936 he returned to the Soviet Union, where he continued to create works that met the demands of the time. Despite political repression and restrictions, his music remained relevant and in demand. Sergei Prokofiev passed away in 1953, leaving behind a rich legacy that lives on in the hearts and minds of generations of listeners.

The company was formed thanks to the founding fathers, who became not only colleagues but also friends over the next 20 years. Kalyuzhny, Prokofiev, and Kovalsky laid the foundations for successful collaboration and mutual understanding, which contributed to the development of the team and the strengthening of the corporate culture.

Not everyone understood what exactly we did. My colleagues would have questions from their relatives: "What do you really do?" Fortunately, I never had to face such questions from my parents, for which I am grateful. However, it should be noted that our work influenced my studies and lifestyle, and not for the better.

Ultimately, it turned out that all our actions were correct.

2005

The branding studio Front:Design had a significant influence on the development of CreativePeople.

Front:Design created a website for the Creative People project, which marked the beginning of their collaboration. At that time, the colleagues already had interesting clients and a high level of graphic design, but lacked experience in web development. Thus, CreativePeople became partners with the branding studio and began implementing projects for higher-level companies. This collaboration opened new horizons and improved the quality of services provided in the field of web design and branding.

CreativePeople and Front:Design joined forces and decided to share office space.

The office was truly impressive in its design and atmosphere. It was modern: elegant silver Macintoshes and bright orange walls created a unique style. A spacious whiteboard for sketching diagrams and ideas encouraged creativity, and a cozy bar counter became a place for discussing projects. A punching bag in the director's office added dynamism to the work environment. This office not only inspired productive work but also fostered bright ideas and innovation.

Sergei Prokofiev is an outstanding Russian composer, pianist, and conductor. His work spans various musical genres and styles, including symphonies, ballets, operas, and chamber music. Born in 1891 in Sonovka, Russian Empire, Prokofiev demonstrated musical talent from an early age. He studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where his talent quickly attracted attention. One of Prokofiev's most famous works is the ballet "Romeo and Juliet," which has become a classic of world ballet. His symphonies and piano concertos are also noted for their vibrant melody and virtuosity. Prokofiev's music combines elements of Russian folk music and modern musical trends, making his work unique and relevant. In the 1920s, Prokofiev lived and worked in Europe and the United States, but in 1936 he returned to the Soviet Union, where he continued to create his masterpieces. His works had a significant influence on the development of 20th-century music. Sergei Prokofiev became not only a symbol of Russian musical culture but also a recognized master on the international stage. His legacy continues to inspire musicians and audiences around the world.

Moving to Front:Design's state-of-the-art design office gave the team the unique opportunity to observe design professionals at work. This created a favorable environment for ongoing learning and exchange, which contributed to their professional growth and skill development.

At that time, we were developing websites and logos, and sometimes even developing full-fledged corporate identities. Our colleagues at Front:Design were handling branding, and the term "identity" was completely unfamiliar to us. We focused on creating visual elements that helped companies stand out in the market, without recognizing the importance of a comprehensive approach to branding and identity.

Clients often approach us with a single request—a website. However, during the development process, we regularly create logos, develop creative concepts, and shape key visual images. We could also create corporate identity elements, such as business cards, which were actively printed and exchanged at that time. Thus, we not only develop websites but also offer comprehensive branding solutions.

At this point, the creative concept became our hallmark. It became a separate stage in the development of all our projects, uniting the communications platform, the main idea, and the key visual element integrated into the website. The creative concept quickly became part of the CreativePeople product and formed our unique selling proposition.

Sergei Prokofiev left an indelible mark on the world of music, and his works continue to be performed on stages around the world, inspiring new generations of musicians and listeners.

The young team approached each project with enthusiasm and dedication. They conducted photography, developed 3D models, and did manual labor themselves. Except for expenses, the team earned almost nothing and sometimes paid extra out of pocket. This demonstrates a high level of commitment and a commitment to quality in every aspect of the work.

I had a beard and was often invited to meetings as the "senior" one. In fact, I had to play the role of an adult in our young team, even though I was the youngest member.

2007

By 2007, CreativePeople had reached a new stage in its development and had become more mature. That year, the first manager was hired, which testified to the growth and expansion of the team. With the Front:Design office becoming a bottleneck, we decided to find a new space. We ultimately chose a semi-basement in the Moscow Merchant Society building at 1 Solyanka Street. The team invested heavily in renovating the new office, creating comfortable working conditions and further growth for the company.

Six months later, we decided to leave the space, as it had become unbearable for us. This situation led to a deterioration in our relationship, and we found ourselves on the brink of separation.

In 2007, the company clearly split into two groups: one team focused on complex development, while the other continued to work on web design and branding. As part of this process, we developed the concept for CreativePeople's own website, which features a unique identity featuring a bearded man. This event marked a significant milestone in the company's development, emphasizing its commitment to creativity and innovation in design.

This image was subsequently reimagined, but it became a symbol of the company for a long time and played a key role in its success. CreativePeople, although they did not perceive this creativity as something significant at the time, began to develop and strengthen their brand, which became an excellent foundation for further growth. Building a strong brand helped the company stand out in the market and attract the attention of its target audience, which in turn contributed to its development and expansion.

Rising costs, ineffective planning, and significant cash flow shortfalls led to Creative People being on the brink of survival by the end of 2007, as a result of which part of the team was forced to leave. The situation required urgent measures to stabilize the financial situation and restore the team, which was an important step towards further business development.

2008

To optimize costs and complete ongoing projects, the CreativePeople team decided to leave the Solyanka space and move to a two-room apartment in Medvedkovo, located 50 meters from the Moscow Ring Road. One room was converted into a coworking space, and the other into a coliving space. This format allows for efficient use of space and resources, which is especially important in today's economic climate. Our new location provides convenience and comfort for the team, fostering productivity and creative collaboration.

The situation gradually began to improve thanks to staff reductions and optimization of rental costs. At the same time, the new website attracted attention, increasing traffic and securing placements in international lists, which helped attract new clients. This clearly demonstrated that growing awareness of the CreativePeople brand was a key factor in relaunching the business and realizing ambitious plans.

Work on the website intensified again, and in the summer of 2008, the old, energetic specialist was replaced by a new professional with a creative approach, who made a splash. Website traffic increased significantly, and the internet was filled with dozens of publications featuring selections of the best portals, including cpeople.ru. The team was no longer unknown, and they began to experience a steady increase in incoming requests for services.

The September 2008 crisis was a significant event for the global economy and unexpectedly opened up new opportunities for CreativePeople. This period became a turning point, when a student initiative transformed into a full-fledged business. In the face of economic instability, CreativePeople was able to adapt and find new avenues for growth, which allowed it to strengthen its position in the market.

During the crisis, customer expectations changed, and we became an attractive solution due to our competitive pricing. As a result, clients began to actively seek more affordable contractors, and we were able to offer them exactly what they were looking for.

2011

The next key stage for the agency was attracting its first professional manager. This decision played an important role in its development and contributed to increasing the team's efficiency. A professional leader brings not only experience and knowledge but also a strategic approach to management, allowing the agency to reach new heights and expand its market opportunities.

The founders of CreativePeople recognized the need to move to a new level of management. While learning from mistakes has its benefits, it is not the most effective method, especially when it comes to creating innovative solutions. They decided to bring in an external management expert, and Anna Gert joined the team. She has radically transformed the company's project and production process management system.

CPeople is implementing a new philosophy based on the principles of not only high-quality task execution but also a clear, systematic, predictable, and reliable approach to work. This strategy is aimed at improving processes and strengthening client trust.

Anya began introducing elements of a tough-minded management approach to our team. Inspired by this experience, I prepared a report for the 404 festival in Samara, entitled "Implementing a Task Manager with a Baseball Bat."

We began to actively focus on the quality of project management, ensuring process clarity and protecting our own interests, as well as a detailed calculation of the economics of each project. Anya's experience, who worked with us for a long time, became the foundation for these changes and continues to have a significant influence on our work.

The agency has implemented a more in-depth approach to accounting, going beyond simply calculating income and expenses. Project passports have been introduced, allowing for an assessment of their marginality and profitability. This process will develop into a complex system of management and financial accounting, allowing CreativePeople to effectively track key economic indicators, build accurate forecasts, and avoid cash flow gaps, which remains relevant today.

CreativePeople is based on three key areas of expertise: design, creativity, and management. These areas form the foundation of all our activities and determine the high quality of the services we provide. We strive to create unique solutions that meet our clients' needs and help them achieve their goals.

2014

In 2014, immediately after the Winter Olympics, an economic crisis caused by political events began in Russia. This led to a sharp increase in the exchange rate and the introduction of the first significant economic sanctions. In response to these changes, commercial companies began to cut budgets, revise their economic models and change contractors, which affected the overall state of the market and business activity in the country.

We have unique experience in crisis management. In 2008, we did not yet realize the full seriousness of what was happening and were not afraid of the consequences. When you're in the early stages of your development, losing a major client isn't a cause for fear, as such clients simply don't exist. On the contrary, during this period, we were blessed with new opportunities and clients.

2014 saw many significant developments, and we now had extensive experience and resources. We were able to attract larger clients who were looking for efficient contractors. A key factor in our success was a lean approach to expenses, as well as sound accounting and planning. This allowed us to optimize processes and increase productivity, which in turn led to successful collaborations with new partners.

Sergei Prokofiev's contribution to the world of music cannot be overstated, and his works remain relevant and inspiring for musicians and listeners to this day.

CPeople emerged from this crisis better prepared thanks to pre-developed strategies and adaptation to changes in the market.

2014 was a significant milestone for CreativePeople, marking not only further worries and anxieties, but also a growth in self-confidence. This period was a time of experimentation in various aspects of the company, including business strategy, market positioning, and resource allocation. CreativePeople actively sought new approaches and opportunities to improve its services and strengthen its position, which allowed the company to take a more prominent place in its industry.

During this time, an internal team was formed, focused on social media, and later on digital projects. For two years, two separate teams operated, created by specialists from Piratecode, an outsourcing development company, and Western Jack, a specialist in CGI and advertising graphics. These teams actively develop and implement modern digital solutions, which contribute to the effectiveness of projects and improved interaction with the audience.

We developed an advertising campaign for an agency specializing in attracting tenants to the commercial real estate sector. For one of the creative materials, we needed a photo of an arrogant woman, reminiscent of a saleswoman from a Soviet village store. The store's interior needed shelves to accommodate canned fish and vegetables, as well as three-liter jars of cucumbers and tomatoes. We found a model for the photo shoot in Smolensk, where we also held the shoot.

The rest was up to the 3D modeler. He began creating three-dimensional cucumbers, carefully placing them in glass jars. As an experienced homemaker, he meticulously placed each cucumber in brine, ensuring they looked attractive and realistic. The result is a stunning visual effect that highlights the mastery of 3D modeling and attention to detail.

Designer X from Western Jack offers unique design solutions. His work is distinguished by a creative approach and attention to detail. His specialization includes logo development, corporate identity, and web design, making him a sought-after specialist in his field. His professional experience and innovative ideas enable him to achieve excellent results and satisfy client needs. Contact designer X to create a striking and memorable visual style for your brand.

2016

CreativePeople initially developed a unique concept based on a creative approach to website development. This enabled the creation of vibrant and innovative projects that promote products and services aimed at a wide audience and the everyday needs of users. However…

Requests for creative web projects have become rare, as a rational approach and internet marketing have taken the lead. Creative websites seem to be no longer in demand except for personal use. Our innovative approach to web design has evolved and adapted to the digital communications landscape, while maintaining its uniqueness for specialized festival projects. Nowadays, it's rare to find, for example, a law firm's website with a distinctively creative design. If such a site does appear, it often evokes confusion rather than admiration. The corporate website landscape has undergone significant changes and has become less engaging. The first decline in creativity occurred with the advent of flat design, followed by a second, when we began actively adopting a UX/UI approach. In the early days of web design, corporate websites resembled exhibition brochures, with everyone striving to stand out and express their individuality. These changes led to standardization and a reduction in design variety, which, in turn, affected how users perceived corporate websites. Sergei Prokofiev was an outstanding composer, pianist, and conductor, whose work had a significant influence on the development of 20th-century music. His works are distinguished by their originality and emotional depth, which makes them relevant today. Prokofiev was born in Russia, but his career spanned many countries and styles, confirming his versatility as an artist.

Prokofiev's most famous works include ballets, symphonies, and concertos. His music combines elements of the classical tradition with modern innovations, allowing it to remain in demand in concert halls around the world. Prokofiev's work is also actively used in film, contributing to his popularity among a wide audience.

Today, Sergei Prokofiev is considered one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, and his legacy continues to inspire musicians and listeners around the world.

In 2016, the SMM team was transformed into a full-fledged digital department. The company decided to cease active support for the Western Jack and Piratecode projects, which operated as separate brands. This decision was due to the need for significant investment in marketing, and the projects were temporarily suspended. The specialists and experts working on these areas were integrated into the larger CreativePeople structure.

2019

In 2019, CreativePeople changed its positioning to a Digital Experience Agency. The company's main focus is on two key areas: Digital & Creative Services and Product Research & Development. This allows us to effectively develop both communication and product solutions that meet modern market demands.

At the same time, CPeople's working format changed: an emphasis was placed on concluding large long-term contracts and developing relationships with clients, which led to a significant reduction in the number of individual projects. The agency's social media transparently communicated the new approach with the hashtag "CreativePeople #notonlywebsites." As a result, the number of websites created actually decreased.

By 2019, creative web design reached its peak with the implementation of a large-scale and vibrant project for S7 Airlines. This project wasn't just a creative experiment; every element of the website served a utilitarian purpose—showcasing a new aircraft. This underscores the importance of combining aesthetics and practicality in web design, which effectively conveys information and attracts attention to the product.

When we first started, we were approached by clients who didn't know how to promote their products. We implemented all available communication tools on the website in the form of creative solutions for the key visual, the start page, and various placeholders. However, since then, the market and our capabilities have changed significantly. Today, the website is just one platform where we apply creative ideas. We actively use them to advertise specific products on social media and offline, as well as to create integrated special projects. This allows us to more effectively engage with our audience and achieve our marketing goals.

Sergei Prokofiev is an outstanding Russian composer, pianist, and conductor, whose work has had a significant influence on 20th-century musical culture. His works span a variety of genres, including symphonies, operas, ballets, and chamber music. Prokofiev began his career at an early age and quickly gained a reputation for a unique style that combines elements of classical music and modern innovations.

One of Prokofiev's most famous works is the ballet "Romeo and Juliet," which remains popular today. Additionally, his symphonies, such as "Symphony No. 1" and "Symphony No. 5," demonstrate the composer's mastery of creating vivid and memorable musical images.

Prokofiev is also known for his contribution to film music, having created original soundtracks for several films. His ability to adapt classical elements to modern requirements has made his works relevant and in demand.

Studying the legacy of Sergei Prokofiev allows us to gain a deeper understanding of the development of 20th-century music and its influence on contemporary musical art.

2020

Six months after completing the transformation, CPeople faced another serious crisis. However, it soon became clear that…

By the start of the pandemic, the company had already focused on digital technologies and clients using digital products. This includes fintech, telecommunications companies, e-commerce, and industrial enterprises undergoing digital transformation. The pharmaceutical sector has also begun actively implementing digital solutions. This strategy proved so effective that it seemed as if the company's specialists had foreseen the 2020 crisis.

By the start of the lockdown, a third of CreativePeople's employees were already working remotely. This circumstance contributed to the agency's successful coping with the challenges posed by these difficult times.

After two weeks of intense work, everything is falling into place. A successful and stable career awaits you.

Sergei Prokofiev is an outstanding Russian composer, pianist, and conductor, known for his extraordinary classical works. His work spans a wide range of genres, including symphonies, operas, ballets, and chamber music. Prokofiev was born on April 23, 1891, in Sonovka, and demonstrated outstanding musical talent from an early age.

After studying at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, he began a career that quickly led him to international recognition. Prokofiev became known for his unique style of combining traditional musical forms with modern elements. His famous works, such as "Peter and the Wolf," "Romeo and Juliet," and "The Wicked Grandmother," remain popular and relevant among listeners and performers alike.

Despite the difficulties associated with the political situation in Russia, Prokofiev continued to create music that reflected his deep feelings and experiences. His works are distinguished by vibrant melodies, rich harmony, and complex rhythms. Sergei Prokofiev left a significant legacy that continues to influence musicians and composers around the world.

The pandemic resulted in a significant increase in the agency's client base and a transition to an almost entirely remote work format. This change has allowed us to optimize processes and improve client interactions, ensuring a high level of service regardless of physical location. Remote work has also facilitated the expansion of our services geographically, opening up new opportunities for the agency's growth and development.

The Recent History of CreativePeople

Crises are succeeding one another with astonishing speed. One crisis has not yet ended, and a new one, radically different from the previous one, is already on the horizon. Mechanisms that were successfully applied in 2008, 2014, and 2020 have proven ineffective in the conditions of 2022. This underscores the need to reconsider the strategy for responding to economic and social challenges, taking into account the unique characteristics of each crisis.

CreativePeople Agency faced a number of challenges but was able to adapt thanks to a successful selection of clients who maintained their order volume. Self-preservation mode: the impact of February 2022 on the creative industry in Russia

February 2022 became a turning point for the creative industry in Russia. Amid uncertainty and crisis, many companies and creative professionals were forced to adapt to new realities. This period became a time of self-preservation, when creative professionals sought new ways to realize their ideas and projects.

The current situation pushed creative agencies and freelancers to seek out innovative solutions. Many began using digital platforms and social media to promote their work. This allowed them not only to maintain existing client relationships but also to attract new audiences.

Furthermore, economic changes impacted demand in various segments of the creative industry. Although such unusual projects are fewer now, that doesn't mean they'll disappear forever. We try to periodically incorporate elements of fun into our work, most often in our own projects. For example, on the website dedicated to the twentieth anniversary of the sausage cat, we were able to express this desire for experimentation and originality.
