Blowjob?

Sonic Members Youth has always had an interest not only in music but also in art. This interest is reflected in their lyrics and the visuals of almost all of their albums. The band's music is rich in references to artistic movements, highlighting their unique style and deep connection to culture. Sonic Youth successfully combines musical experiments with elements of visual art, which makes their work multifaceted and interesting for listeners and art connoisseurs.

For the cover of the album Evol (1986), they used a still from the film "Submit to Me" by Richard Kern, for Daydream Nation (1988) - a painting by Gerhard Richter, for Dirty (1992) - photographs of taxidermy by Mike Kelley, for A Thousand Leaves (1998) - a collage by Marnie WeberImage: SST Records / Enigma Records / DGC Records / Geffen Records / Matador Records
For Sonic Nurse (2004) - a painting by Richard Prince, for Rather Ripped (2006) - work by Christopher Wool, for NYC Ghosts & Flowers (2000) a painting by William Burroughs, and for their latest album, The Eternal (2009), an abstract painting by fingerstyle guitarist John Fahey.Image: Geffen Records / DGC Records / Matador Records

The collaboration with a major label piqued their interest in the provocative work of Pettibon, whom they had respected from the beginning of his career.

In November 1989, Sonic Youth began recording a demo version of their upcoming album, tentatively titled Blowjob. The project yielded a track of the same name, inspired by the 1945 film noir Mildred Pierce. The album became an important milestone in the band's work, reflecting their unique style and influence on alternative music.

The film tells the story of housewife Mildred Pierce, who sacrifices everything for her arrogant and greedy daughter. Mildred is constantly shamed by her daughter for her low social status, which forces her mother to struggle to improve her life. Mildred opens a successful restaurant chain and enters into a marriage of convenience with a famous former rich man, hoping to change her fate. However, this does not bring the desired results. The daughter, conspiring with Mildred's new husband, commits murder as a result of their quarrel. Ultimately, Mildred takes the blame and confesses to the uncommitted murder. The film touches on themes of maternal love, sacrifice, and complex family relationships, demonstrating how the desire for success can lead to tragic consequences.

For the album cover, the musicians intended to use one of Pettibon's illustrations, which they noticed on a T-shirt. This illustration depicts actress Joan Crawford, famous for her role in the film "Mildred Pierce", and also contains the inscription "Blowjob?" This visual element highlights the unique style and concept of the album, reflecting both the artistic and cultural influences that Crawford's work has had on the musicians.

The album title was a real test of humor and record label censorship. However, the Geffen team was unable to cope with this task.

Fun fact: the record company and our representative from A&R opposed the use of a black-and-white image from the very beginning. They even planned to order stickers for the cover warning of censorship, since Tipper Gore, a renowned American civil rights activist, spoke out against foul language.

This approach underscores their respect for the creative process and the artist, which in turn enhances their image in the music industry.

Thurston Moore had a significant collection of Pettibon fanzines, which inspired him to create the new cover.

I saw the news photo that inspired Raymond's drawing and noticed that there was something special about the image. It was filled with multiple meanings and opportunities for interpretation.

This black-and-white illustration, executed in Pettibon's style, is an unusual romantic image. The painting depicts a young couple radiating serene calm and detachment from the world around them. The artist's signature adds a rebellious and provocative quality to this piece, adding depth and context to the scene.

"I stole my sister's boyfriend. It was a total blast. "That same week, we killed my parents and got out of there." Image: DGC Records

The characters in the illustration, unlike the caption, were real people. Few people realized what a dark and terrible story this seemingly harmless picture hides. Behind the external calm of the events depicted, there is a deep and disturbing plot that makes you think about the real emotions and experiences of the people captured in it.

On April 19, 1966, the resonant trial of Ian Brady and Myra Hindley began in the UK. They were found guilty of kidnapping, torturing, and murdering three children. This case attracted public attention and became one of the most high-profile in the history of the country. In 1985, 20 years after their sentences to life imprisonment, the serial killers confessed to the murder of two more children, which further shocked society. The trial and its aftermath left a profound mark on British crime and justice history.

The remains of the five victims, ranging in age from ten to seventeen, were discovered in shallow graves on Saddleworth Moor, a moorland in northwest England. The crime became known as the "Moor Murders" because of the location where the bodies were found. The case has generated widespread discussion and public interest, raising questions about the safety of young people and the need for more effective measures to prevent such tragedies.

The Goo album cover was based on an actual paparazzi photograph taken in 1966 during the trial. The illustration caught Pettibon's attention when he came across it in True Detective magazine. This discovery inspired a visual design that perfectly captures the atmosphere and spirit of the times.

Trial witnesses Maureen Hindley and David SmithImage: True Detective / Sonic Youth

The photograph shows David Smith and his wife Maureen Hindley, who were important witnesses in the The Marsh Killers case. Their testimony played a key role in the investigation. Seventeen-year-old David Smith had in-depth knowledge of serial killers and often visited them, as his wife was Myra Hindley's younger sister. David and Ian Brady bonded over their shared history of trouble with the law. Currently, they shared a fascination with fantasies about committing crimes, such as bank robberies. David Smith witnessed the murder of one of Ian Brady's last victims. The teenager was killed with the butt of an axe in his own home, a horrific event that unfolded before David's eyes. While the murder was being committed, Myra Hindley was in the kitchen, aware and hearing everything that was happening. Afterwards, they all calmly sat down to drink tea together, which emphasizes the terrifying indifference and calm of the criminals.

Returning home, Smith, frightened by what happened, shared his experiences with his wife, who convinced him to contact the police. This decision was decisive, as thanks to their actions, they managed to stop a series of horrific murders. The events that took place emphasize the importance of promptly seeking help and cooperating with law enforcement in critical situations.

My Friend Goo

The sixth album is called Goo, which is inspired by the song My Friend Goo. This composition, along with the instrumental track Scooter + Jinx, references the main characters of the short film Sir Drone. The screenwriter and director of this film is Raymond Pettibon. The album combines musical and visual elements to create a unique atmosphere and immerse the listener in a world that reflects the themes of Pettibon's work.

The film satirically reflects on the dual nature of the music industry and the naivety of aspiring musicians. The plot centers on two guys who aspire to form a protopunk band in 1970s Los Angeles. This story shows how young artists face the challenges and realities of the music world, striving to realize their dreams.

Goo was a girlfriend of one of the two guys who often hung out. As a result, she became the drummer in their music band. I thought it would be wonderful to support her in this endeavor.

This track has become an important part of the musical history and development of the album, attracting the attention of listeners and critics.

Gary Gersh denied accusations that the label put pressure on the musicians to create a more commercially successful product. However, in addition to problems with the title and album cover, the band members had serious concerns about the quality of the recordings made during the early sessions. As a result, they had to replace engineer Nick Sansano, with whom they had successfully worked on the previous album. This time, the musicians realized that Sansano was under pressure from a new label, which insisted that their music sound more radio-friendly.

We struggled for a long time to achieve the desired result. Each time, something went wrong, and we had to start over. This caused me deep disappointment.

The cost of working on the album was a record-breaking $150,000, which is five times more than the recording costs of the band's previous album, Daydream Nation. This significant increase in costs underscores the musicians' ambitious approach to creating new material.

DIY vs Design

The cover for Sonic Youth, like many of Pettibon's works, was not the result of a commissioned project. It was created in the spirit of DIY culture, which highlights the artist's individual approach. An illustration based on a magazine clipping is transformed into an element, adhered to the album sleeve with ordinary clear tape, adding uniqueness and originality. This method not only showcases Pettibon's creativity but also reflects the philosophy of independent art, where every element has meaning and tells its own story.

I used to have a collection of hundreds of fanzines, which I would buy for as little as 50 cents. Today, their value has reached hundreds of dollars.

The working method in question can be described as organic. In this approach, the creative process and the final result become a natural reflection of the artist's interests, based on intuition and personal preferences. Moore, acting as both designer and client, realized his idea exactly as he wanted, which emphasizes the importance of a personal approach to creativity. This style of work contributes to the creation of unique content that resonates with the audience and meets their needs.

A designer from Geffen carefully studied the cover layout and noticed that one of my hairs and a thumbprint accidentally got into the frame. However, I decided not to interfere and leave everything as is.

This prompts reflection on why art often hurts. If it doesn't, is it really art? Why do glamorous photo shoots provoke repulsion and major labels breed contempt? These questions highlight the depth and layering of artistic expression, opening new horizons for understanding visual content.
