It is important to recognize that internet addiction can negatively impact the social life, education, and mental health of both children and adults. Understanding the signs and consequences of this condition will help in its prevention and correction.

Why do children develop internet addiction?

There are six main reasons for internet addiction in children and adolescents. First, it is the availability of technology. Today, almost every child has a smartphone or tablet, which makes it easy to access the internet at any time. Second, social media plays an important role in the lives of young people, creating the need for constant communication and participation in virtual life. Third, it is the lack of parental control, which allows children to spend a lot of time online without restrictions. Fourth, it is the variety of online content, which can be fascinating and addictive. Fifth, it is the search for comfort and escape from reality, especially in the face of stress or social problems. Finally, sixth, it is the influence of peers, which can contribute to increased time spent online. Understanding these factors will help parents and professionals more effectively deal with the problem of internet addiction among young people.

How can you tell if a child or teenager has internet addiction?

  • The first sign is a loss of interest in real life: when the child is no longer interested in trips, walks, clubs, or communicating with friends. If they consistently prefer their phone to various alternatives, this is an important signal that their relationship with gadgets needs to be regulated.
  • The second and very important sign is a lack of cognitive and play activity: the child is not interested in new places and toys, they don't ask questions, and they don't take part in family conversations. They seem to be frozen in anticipation of when their phone will be returned so they can continue playing or watching TikToks.

A child's loss of interest in life can lead to modern gadgets becoming the only available way to spend their leisure time. In such situations, children may spend a lot of time on screens, which negatively impacts their development, social skills, and mental health. It is important to strive to create a variety of exciting activities that will help restore interest in life and develop creativity.

It is important to monitor the time spent on gadgets to help children develop healthy habits and improve their quality of life.

How to help a child get rid of internet addiction?

There are four main ways.

An effective preventative measure is the formation and maintenance of a healthy regimen for the use of digital technologies. Setting clear time limits for online activities and encouraging active leisure can help children develop self-regulation skills. It's also important to engage teenagers in discussions about their internet habits and work together to develop rules that will help them be mindful of their internet use. The first step to addressing internet addiction in children and teens is having an open conversation about the situation. Many of them face a lack of time to complete homework, socialize with friends, and get enough sleep. You can start the conversation like this: "Today you spent an hour playing games instead of doing your homework. As a result, you'll have to go to bed later, and you won't get enough sleep tomorrow, which will affect your mood." After this, it's important to set clear time limits for device use. For example, an elementary school student might be allowed to use their device every day after school for one hour. During this time, they can engage in any activity: playing games, making videos, browsing social media, or chatting with friends. After the allotted time has passed, the child is required to return the device and begin doing their homework. This approach will help balance screen time with important aspects of life, such as studying and socializing.

At the beginning of a limited internet access regime, a child may experience frustration and tantrums. This is a natural reaction. It is important for a child to understand that they have a right to use the internet, but this right has certain limits. Establishing such a regime will help a child learn to manage their time online and develop self-discipline skills.

Simply telling a child or teenager, "Please spend no more than two hours on gadgets," is not enough. To successfully limit screen time, parents need to actively monitor compliance with these rules. In this context, parental control apps become indispensable assistants. They allow you not only to set time limits but also to monitor your child's activity on devices, thus providing a more effective approach to screen time management.

Despite parents' efforts to control the daily routine, if a child or teenager does not know how to communicate with peers, they will experience feelings of loneliness and isolation. This may lead to them seeking solace in online communication. Teaching children social interaction skills is important for their psychological health and successful social adaptation. Without these skills, they risk finding themselves in a situation where virtual communication replaces full-fledged interactions with others, which can negatively affect their development and self-esteem.
