Creativity, therefore, plays a key role in our survival and development, allowing us to find new approaches and solutions in a changing world.

This can be due to many factors, including personal interests, environment, and educational level. Psychological aspects, such as self-confidence and openness to new ideas, also play an important role. Support from family and friends can also contribute to the development of creative abilities. To realize your potential, it is important to create conditions conducive to creative thinking and actively seek out new sources of inspiration.

Individual differences in creativity are associated with both cognitive abilities and personality traits. People with high levels of creativity often exhibit openness to new experiences, flexible thinking, curiosity, and independence. In 2023, a meta-analysis was published examining the effectiveness of various methods for developing creativity in adults. Although there is no specific data on this issue, the authors of the study came to an important conclusion: the duration of training is not a decisive factor. The analysis identified three main groups of teaching methods, which differ in the time spent on their application. These results emphasize that the quality and approach to training are more important than its duration.

  • The first group is a one-time study of a technique, for example, brainstorming or the "six hats".
  • The second is taking a short course dedicated to developing creativity using different methods.
  • The third group is a long-term course on developing creativity, lasting several weeks.

The effectiveness of the three types turned out to be approximately the same. However, the meta-analysis did not evaluate the sustainability of the effect on creativity and the duration of its maintenance.

Last year, my colleagues and I conducted a detailed review of the methods used in creativity research. These methods are also discussed in the meta-analysis I mentioned earlier. For example, the results of the meta-analysis show that meditation demonstrates effectiveness comparable to long-term creativity training. At the same time, stimulating creativity with chemicals turns out to be one of the least effective strategies.

Creativity-boosting methods vary in effectiveness depending on individual preferences and approaches. One of the most effective is brainstorming, which allows you to generate numerous ideas in a short period of time. Visualization is also helpful, helping you see a problem from different perspectives and find innovative solutions. The association method, which connects ideas, can facilitate sudden insights. It is also important to prioritize rest and a change of scenery, as this can facilitate the emergence of new ideas. Experimenting with various techniques, such as creating mind maps or using random words to stimulate thinking, can significantly increase creativity.

It is important to understand that these proposed methods are not a guarantee of success. Research shows that creative ideas arise more often in certain conditions, but their effectiveness for solving a specific problem in a specific person remains unclear. Researchers often recommend the following approaches:

  • Rest or switch to another activity that is not too difficult (but not too easy either). Perhaps, an unconscious problem-solving process occurs during this process, or rest simply allows you to replenish depleted resources.
  • Use attention management techniques or meditation - either concentrating as much as possible on your thoughts and state, or, conversely, letting your thoughts wander freely.
  • Involve emotions - both positive and negative can be useful. You can improve your mood with humor or, conversely, get angry.
  • Move to a new context. A change of scenery allows you to find a solution, because a familiar environment suggests the use of familiar methods.
  • Move around. Physical activity, like engaging emotions, gives energy, but is not as effective.
  • Model the problem using available tools, pen and paper, and so on. But sometimes real objects can have completely unnecessary properties and, on the contrary, drive you further into a dead end.
