What is positive motivation

It helps you focus on achieving specific goals and overcome obstacles along the way. Motivated people possess high inner strength, which allows them to successfully overcome challenges and achieve desired results. Knowing about energy and persistence, we often perceive motivation as the main driving force in everyday life. However, motivation is only one of the characteristics necessary for success. It is known that constantly overcoming oneself and forcing oneself to work or study can lead to burnout. It is important to find a balance between motivation and rest to maintain productivity and maintain high performance. Understanding this aspect allows us not only to avoid burnout but also to build sustainable habits that will help us achieve long-term goals without compromising our mental health.

To ensure that learning and teaching remain meaningful, it is important to focus not on the strength, but on the quality of motivation. Effective motivation plays a key role in the learning and teaching process, fostering a deeper understanding and interest in subjects. Focusing on high-quality motivation helps create an atmosphere in which students and teachers can achieve their goals and develop their skills.

When can we talk about high-quality, positive, and optimal motivation? This is the state of flow—the moment when the process of activity becomes interesting, engaging, and enjoyable in itself. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, the author of the concept of flow, describes this state as deep involvement in an activity. At such moments, a person expends a lot of energy without feeling effort, forgetting about time and themselves. At the same time, there is a feeling that everything is working out, and the activity itself brings bright and intense pleasure. The flow state not only contributes to increased productivity, but also improves the overall quality of life, creating conditions for personal growth and self-realization.

There are many situations in life in which we experience the flow state. This can happen during hobbies, sports, games, or work. All of these situations have common characteristics that contribute to immersion in flow.

  • clear goals: I know what I need to achieve and how;
  • feedback: I see whether my actions are successful;
  • sense of control: I know that success is possible and that I have the power to achieve it;
  • the level of difficulty is optimal in relation to my abilities: not prohibitively difficult, but not so easy that it becomes boring.

Why motivation cannot be only intrinsic

The flow state is characterized by intrinsic motivation, in which the activity becomes an end in itself. However, in real life, external factors often impact our productivity. For example, academic assignments rarely promote flow, as they can feel like obligations rather than interesting challenges. To achieve flow, it is important to create conditions that promote concentration and engagement with the task, which will increase efficiency and job satisfaction.

Preparing a PhD dissertation is often a highly complex task. Goals remain unclear: it is not always clear what requirements the dissertation must meet and what criteria determine its success. Feedback on the quality of your work is virtually nonexistent; even reviewers at scientific journals may only provide feedback after months of waiting. This leads to a lack of control over the process. During the defense stage, you face uncertainty: there is no certainty about how the defense will go and whether you will be able to successfully approve it.

Performing tasks based on external motivation can have various consequences for your mental state. While such motivation can be beneficial and contribute to achieving results, it can also lead to burnout. It is important to be aware of these aspects in order to find a balance between external incentives and internal needs, which will help avoid negative consequences and maintain productivity.

A 2014 meta-analysis based on studies involving over 200,000 respondents demonstrates that intrinsic and extrinsic motivation often go hand in hand. Both forms of motivation play a significant role in achieving results. However, intrinsic motivation is a greater predictor of the quality of the result, while extrinsic motivation influences quantitative indicators. For example, if a student is writing an essay to get a high grade, their work may be longer, but not necessarily more interesting. At the same time, to make the essay creative and engaging, it is important to develop intrinsic motivation and interest in the topic. This will not only improve the quality of the assignment but also ensure a deep understanding of the material.

Intrinsic motivation is directly linked to high levels of psychological well-being. Our research has shown that successful students who enjoy learning are often happier than their peers with high grades. We found that these happy, high-achieving students have high intrinsic motivation, which contributes to their success and satisfaction with the educational process. This confirms the importance of developing intrinsic motivation for achieving not only academic success but also overall happiness in life.

How are intrinsic and extrinsic motivation related?

The most widespread theory of motivation in modern psychology is self-determination theory, developed by Richard Ryan and Edward Deci. In their work, they integrated ideas from humanistic philosophy, emphasizing the human desire for freedom as a key element of happiness. One of the main components of their theory is the continuum model of relative autonomy of motivation, which explains how different levels of autonomy influence people's motivation and behavior. This theory is relevant for understanding how internal and external factors shape our desire to achieve goals and satisfy needs.

This phenomenon can be characterized as integrated regulation, which emphasizes intrinsic motivation and the desire for professional growth. Dentistry is not just a job, but a calling that requires diligence and dedication.

The good news is that the process of internalizing motivation is possible—it is a movement along a continuum from top to bottom. For example, a child initially attends school at the insistence of their parents, but over time, they begin to recognize the significance and value of learning for themselves. As a result, autonomous forms of motivation develop, and learning activities begin to bring positive emotions. This transition from extrinsic to intrinsic motivation plays a key role in the educational process and promotes deeper understanding and interest in knowledge.

Two Conditions for the Transition from Extrinsic to Intrinsic Motivation

One of the key discoveries in self-determination theory is that motivation can be effectively managed by creating conditions for the development of more autonomous forms. In this process, it is important to approach it from two sides. On the one hand, it is necessary to provide people with the opportunity to make independent decisions and choose their own paths. On the other hand, it is necessary to maintain and strengthen intrinsic motivation by creating an emotionally safe and supportive environment. This approach promotes deeper engagement and satisfaction, which in turn has a positive effect on results.

The development of intrinsic motivation is largely determined by the environment. An important aspect is the satisfaction of three basic human psychological needs, which play a key role in shaping motivation and the desire for self-development. These needs include the need for autonomy, competence, and social connection. Satisfying these needs helps strengthen intrinsic motivation, which in turn has a positive impact on personal growth and goal achievement.

  • autonomy—the need to act independently, to act in accordance with what you personally think is right in a given situation;
  • competence—the need to experience success, to feel that your actions lead to the desired results;
  • relatedness—the need to feel close to others, to feel that you care about each other, that your relationships are not formal.

There are recommendations for supporting the satisfaction of student needs. For example, to address the need for autonomy, it is worth giving students the opportunity to choose topics for projects or determine their own pace of learning. This promotes the development of independence and responsibility for their own learning. It is also important to create conditions in which students can express their opinions and ideas, which strengthens their motivation and engagement in the learning process. Supporting students' autonomy helps them develop self-confidence, which has a positive impact on their overall educational experience.

  • Introduce rules and requirements only when necessary and always clarify the reasons for them and the values ​​behind them;
  • Accept the point of view of others, listen to their opinions and give them due attention and respect;

This way, you will be able to not only maintain your qualifications at the proper level, but also improve them, which is a key aspect of a successful career. Caring for the psycho-emotional state of participants in the process contributes to their increased motivation and learning effectiveness.

Supporting each other in the educational environment, whether at a university or a school, plays a key role in creating a productive learning atmosphere. We often underestimate the importance of psychological comfort, but research at the beginning of the 21st century confirms that emotional support among students contributes not only to improved academic results but also to the development of social skills. The psychological climate in educational institutions directly affects student motivation and success, which emphasizes the need to develop mutual assistance and support in the educational process.

In distance education, a lack of communication between participants can be a major obstacle to successful learning. Students often do not have the opportunity to see their classmates and interact with the teacher, which makes it difficult to exchange opinions and ideas. In such conditions, it is easy to lose motivation and a sense of engagement, especially without regular feedback and support from teachers. Therefore, it is important to create conditions for active interaction to ensure a comprehensive educational process and improve learning outcomes.

The tenets of self-determination theory have been repeatedly tested in various cultures. How do they apply in our context? An example is a study conducted several years ago on a small sample of students at Moscow universities. This study analyzed alienation from the educational process and the loss of meaning in learning. The results showed that students experienced a decrease in motivation and interest in learning, which underscores the importance of applying self-determination theory to understanding educational processes in the modern context.

  • Productive motivation in Russian students, as we then found, is ensured by clear teacher requirements, the opportunity to choose assignments or topics, adequate task complexity, and support from teachers and classmates.
  • And the opposite conditions, when the teacher is distant and the student has no choice, were associated with alienation.

If the environment does not contribute to the satisfaction of basic needs, a person is still able to rely on intrinsic motivation and engage in reflection, as well as seek meaning in their activities.

Existential analysis opens the way to the search for meaning. Alfred Längle, a renowned psychotherapist, suggests considering meaning as the best possible reality. It's important to ask yourself: what could be most valuable and meaningful within the current learning task? From the many available topics, choose the one that arouses the greatest interest and promises benefit. This approach will not only help you set priorities but also deepen your understanding of personal goals and values. Self-determination theory offers an approach to self-reflection, focusing on questions about the motivation and purpose of your actions. It is important to ask why and how I perform a particular task. If the action is carried out for external reasons, it is necessary to analyze your willingness to continue it. For example, is it worth spending several hours composing a bureaucratic report in order to maintain the opportunity to teach in the future? Such analysis helps identify true motives and improve the quality of decision-making. This question opens up a choice. We can either abandon what we perceive as meaningless, or make a conscious decision and say, "Even though this may not seem very engaging, I have reasons to continue." As a result, external, controlled motivation is transformed into an identified and autonomous one, allowing us to consciously approach our actions and find meaning in them.

Taking care of your motivation plays a key role in maintaining psychological well-being and engagement. When we experience internal resistance, forcing ourselves to work or study, this leads to a decrease in the quality of task performance and negative emotions. Without a sense of value and interest in the activity, any activity becomes burdensome and a source of stress. Maintaining engagement and a positive attitude toward work and study contributes to more effective learning and professional growth.
