Thirty-sixteen-year-olds from a Norwegian secondary school and their literature teacher took part in the experiment. The teacher gave the students an assignment: in small groups, prepare and record an audio podcast lasting 10 to 15 minutes. This task not only contributed to the development of teamwork skills, but also helped students improve their verbal and creative expressiveness, as well as master modern technologies for creating audio content.

Students were asked to select and discuss a poem by a contemporary author from a pre-compiled list. This list included only those works for which there were no reviews or comments online. This was done to prevent teenagers from simply finding the "right answer" and, thus, to promote the development of their critical thinking and analytical skills. This approach helps deepen their understanding of literature and encourages independent analysis of texts.
The experiment lasted over one month.
- Two weeks before the start, the teacher hung posters in the classroom with the rules of research discussion (they were developed by one of the authors of the study, Gunvald Dversnes). Among them, for example, active listening to others, an encouragement to complement each other's ideas, a critical but respectful attitude towards other people's opinions, and the ability to argue one's position. The teacher periodically reminded the students of these rules throughout the experiment.
- The first week was devoted to theoretical preparation: the teacher told the students how poetry analysis is generally structured, what stylistic devices poets use to convey their thoughts to the reader.
- During the second and third weeks, work on podcasts took place in groups. There were eight groups in total, 3-4 people each. All discussions were recorded and subsequently analyzed by the researchers. Each group held six meetings to discuss, prepare, and record the podcast.
- During the fourth week, the students finalized and completed their podcasts. Although the researchers did not specify how the students themselves concluded the assignment, it can be assumed that they presented their work to the class.
The researchers collected approximately 50 hours of recordings of students' conversations during preparation for their graduation ceremonies. The recordings were first classified into two main types: personal and work-related discussions. The work-related discussions, in turn, were analyzed and divided into two categories: presentational and exploratory. Exploratory discussions included discussions about the meaning of various poems, while presentational discussions included the work completed by the students after they had come to an understanding of the chosen work. This approach to analyzing conversations allows us to better understand how students interact and develop their ideas in preparation for important events.

The final stage of the study was a detailed analysis of the recordings of the two groups Schoolchildren who demonstrated the greatest activity in using exploratory discussions.
The study showed that autonomy does not negatively affect adolescents. On average, 77% of the time spent in group meetings was devoted to work tasks rather than personal conversations. However, it is worth noting that this figure varied among different groups: one group devoted only 7% of the time to side conversations, while another spent 38%. This suggests that the level of self-organization and focus of adolescents can vary significantly, which is important to consider when organizing the educational process.
Research has shown that the ratio of personal and work conversations during meetings depends on their sequence. For example, during the third meeting, students more often discussed extracurricular topics, while during the fifth meeting, work issues predominated. Although the scientists did not explain this phenomenon, it can be assumed that by the third discussion, participants may have become tired of the main issue, and by the fifth meeting, approaching the end, they were focused on completing the project. This highlights the importance of communication dynamics in group projects and the need to consider the emotional state of participants at different stages of the work.
During the discussion, presentational conversations predominated over exploratory ones. Toward the end of the project, the proportion of exploratory discussions decreased significantly: at the second meeting, it fell from 57.5% to 31%. At the same time, presentational conversations increased their share: while at the first meeting they occupied only 14% of the time, at the second meeting their share increased to 31%. This indicates a shift in emphasis from research to presentation of results, which may be related to the approaching conclusion of the project.
Although the study participants were required to analyze only one poem, this proved to be a challenging task. Content analysis of the discussions of two groups that actively used research approaches showed that they experienced difficulties in identifying the lyrical hero, understanding the meaning of the work and comprehending its logic.
