For two years, the egg-shaped cocoon located in the chambers of Mog the Bloodlord remained a mere decorative element – a symbol of the villain's unfulfilled ambitions to create his own royal dynasty. This mysterious object personifies dreams of power and immortality that were never realized.

The dream of returning the kidnapped Mikella, Queen Marika's son, whose body has long since become a withered corpse, remains unfulfilled. The prince set off to unknown lands with a purpose known only to him. To follow his secret journey, players had to wait for the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. Finally, on the night of June 21st, this long-awaited moment arrived: the cocoon, previously serving as a decoration, turned into a portal opening the way to the Kingdom of Shadows. This expansion promises new adventures and mysteries, allowing players to delve deeper into the world and story of Elden Ring.

Fans already suspected that beyond the familiar game world, something more than just DLC with a few new locations awaited us. However, reality exceeded all expectations: in the first week, 5 million players purchased the add-on. This confirms the high interest in the new content and its significance for the community.

FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki stated that the Shadow of the Erdtree add-on will be the largest in the company's history. In reality, this expansion is an integration into the main game—a grand journey to a new land that also serves as the culmination of ideas conceived in Demon's Souls.

To understand all the nuances, it's necessary to describe what I discovered in the Shadow Realm. Elden Ring is a game about journeys, and each player's journey is unique. Every discovery and encounter with characters shapes an individual experience, making each game unique. Delving into a world of darkness and mystery allows you not only to explore new locations but also to uncover secrets that enrich the overall plot. In this context, the Shadow Realm becomes an important part of the journey, providing players with the opportunity to face new challenges and trials.

Preface: Formations Emerging

Before we begin, let's review the overall situation.

It might be easy to miss in the main game, but Mikella the Unclouded is one of the central figures in the Elden Ring mythology. He is the offspring of the queen and the twin brother of the famous Malenia. Mikella was born an Unclouded, a demigod who is well-positioned to become the new ruler of the Betweenlands. His unique history and role in the game world add additional depth to the story and enrich the mythology of Elden Ring, making him an important character for understanding the events and conflicts in the game.

The fate of the future heir, as is often the case in FromSoftware games, was tragic. Mikella was forever trapped in childhood, while his sister suffered from the Red Rot affliction, eating away at her from the inside. The magic of the Erd Tree proved powerless against this disease, leading Mikella to renounce the Golden Order established by his mother. This choice became a significant turning point in their destinies and changed the course of history.

Mog kidnaps Mikella from her cocoon. A still from the game's intro. Screenshot: Elden Ring game / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco.

In the far north, beyond the borders of the Between-Land, Marika's son planted the Holy Tree—a perfect replica of the Erd Tree, free of its flaws. He imprisoned himself in a cocoon at the roots of this tree, seeking to be reborn and free himself and his sister from the curse. This cocoon can be seen in the chambers of Mog, who intended to create his own royal dynasty with Mikella's help. However, his ambitious plan was interrupted by the sword of my Extinguished One.

After the fall of the failed monarch and the lighting of the place of grace, Needler Leda appeared nearby. She, like my Extinguished One, came in search of Mikella. Leda explained that the demigod had headed to the Shadowfell, and we needed to travel there to find out what he was looking for.

The expansion's premise raises two key questions: what is the Shadowfell, cut off from the Betweenlands, and what was Mikella's purpose in being there? These questions become the starting point for a deep exploration of the world that lies beyond the boundaries of familiar reality. Understanding the nature of the Shadow Realm and Michela's motives can reveal new aspects of the plot and deepen the experience of this work.

First meeting with Leda the Needler Screenshot: Shadow of the Erdtree add-on for Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

Shadow of the Erdtree includes lore elements created by George R.R. Martin for Elden Ring that were not used in the main game. Hidetaka Miyazaki noted that this expansion gave him the opportunity to complete some unfinished storylines and ideas. This makes the expansion significant both for fans of the original and for those interested in deep development of the world and characters.

The basic concept of the DLC is initially reminiscent of two other FromSoftware expansions—Ashes of the Ariandel and The Ringed City for Dark Souls 3. These expansions also feature a character who has renounced his origins—the slave knight Gael. Players follow him into unexplored corners of the world, discovering new locations and storylines. These parallels highlight FromSoftware's signature style, which incorporates deep character development and atmospheric locations to create a unique experience for players.

I soon realized that themes and story aren't the only elements linking Shadow of the Erdtree to previous expansions. Also noteworthy is the difficulty level, which FromSoftware has once again pushed to the limit. This makes the game even more engaging and demands maximum concentration and skill from players.

Day 1: Badlands

Shadow of the Erdtree begins without the flashy introductions typical of FromSoftware games. There are no cutscenes; only a short dialogue with Leda and a touch of Mikella's hand transport the player to a small cave on the edge of the Shadow Realm. This approach creates an atmosphere of mystery and immerses you in the game's world, compelling you to explore the surrounding area from the very first minute. My first impression was deceiving: after just a few dozen steps, I found myself before one of the most breathtaking panoramas in the world of Elden Ring. This moment was a true revelation, highlighting the game's beauty and scale, as well as its unique atmosphere. A look at the surrounding landscape immerses you in an atmosphere of adventure and exploration, making Elden Ring an unforgettable experience for players.

Screenshot: Shadow of the Erdtree add-on for Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

A rusty field strewn with ghostly tombstones creates an atmosphere of abandonment and mysticism. The silhouettes of massive towers and bridges appear in the misty distance, lending a sense of mystery to the place. The jagged horizon, outlined by sharp cliffs and precipices, adds drama to the overall landscape. Above all this rises the broken trunk of the Tree of Decay, symbolizing loss and oblivion. This scene immerses one in deep reflection on the past, on what once was, and on the unchanging cycles of life and death.

This landscape clearly demonstrates two key things. First, the Shadow Realm is significantly larger than the Tomb, the starting location in Elden Ring, which Hidetaka Miyazaki himself compared to the expansion's map. Secondly, this is a brutal land: it was here that Marika won her first war, and its aftermath is still felt today.

The first town you encounter was burned to the ground by order of Messmer, Marika's descendant. A terrifying creature roams the area, the instrument of this punitive action—a giant wicker man surrounded by burning bodies. When my friend, with whom I was playing co-op, attempted to fight this monster, it first rained fireballs down on him, then destroyed all life within a hundred meters. This clash became a true test, demonstrating the power and destructiveness of the enemy.

Shadow of the Erdtree quickly shows its teeth. Screenshot: Shadow of the Erdtree add-on for Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

This harsh land shows no mercy, and its inhabitants pay no attention to your victories over the gods and demigods of the Betweenlands. The first boss—a ghostly knight in a tomb ironically named the Nameless Mausoleum—required only a few blows to crush my Extinguished.

I had to venture into this hell on earth to find Marika's son, who, like Kurtz from Apocalypse Now, had taken refuge in the depths of these uncharted territories.

The Crosses of Mikella are designed to simplify the search. These signs are placed at the places where Marika's son gives up part of his being. The crosses mark the main route of Shadow of the Erdtree, which leads through the Shadow Realm to the rebel demigod.

I had no other choice, so I began my journey.

Day 3. On the Benefits of Blessings

Mykella's Crosses serve not only as landmarks but also as sources of blessings from the Tree of Decay. These unique artifacts are essential, as their properties can significantly enhance player abilities. Blessings received from the crosses open up new opportunities and improve chances of success in the game. Using Mykella's Crosses becomes a key element of strategy, allowing you to effectively overcome difficulties and achieve your goals.

These items, resembling scorched wood shards, are a key upgrade material in Shadow of the Erdtree. Each upgrade, requiring two blessings, significantly increases your attack power and reduces damage taken by five percent. While this may seem insignificant, the effect becomes noticeable as blessings accumulate. After collecting just two or three, you'll notice that a boss that previously seemed impassable becomes much more manageable. Using these blessings effectively can significantly change the course of battles and increase your chances of victory.

Screenshot: Add-on Shadow of the Erdtree for the game Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

The second important element worth paying attention to is the blessings of the Holy Spirit. They allow you to upgrade the ghosts you summon for boss fights and in the open world. This innovation wasn't well received by all players, and indeed, it's not particularly elegant. However, without these blessings, the expansion would be ineffective. Upgrading ghosts with blessings opens up new tactical possibilities and makes gameplay more engaging, which is especially important for successfully navigating difficult sections of the game.

Shadow of the Erdtree is expected to attract a diverse audience. This will include experienced players who have completed Elden Ring 100 percent, reached the level cap, and defeated Malenia, as well as newcomers who quickly completed the main quests to begin the expansion. Such a variety of players will create a unique atmosphere in which everyone can find something new and interesting.

Screenshot: Add-on Shadow of the Erdtree for the game Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

I I found myself in a space between worlds: my Extinguished One arrived at Mikella's cocoon already a Lord of the Betweenlands, but its stats weren't particularly noteworthy. Level 130, just slightly above the recommended minimum, its build focused on strength and faith, and its claymore adorned with Holy Ashes of War—all in all, nothing particularly impressive.

Even though I only managed to collect a few Tree blessings, it was enough to defeat the Sacred Dancing Lion. This ferocious, multi-phase boss is actually a fusion of several individuals, united and animated by the spirit of a beast mask.

Additional blessings played a key role in defeating Rellana, whose dual blades and lightning-fast attacks are reminiscent of Mardia from the Old Hunters expansion for Bloodborne, as well as Pontiff Sullivan from Dark Souls 3. These parallels highlight the unique gameplay and challenge offered by these popular games. Being able to quickly react to enemy attacks and use blessings to enhance your abilities significantly increases your chances of success against Rellana.

So, yes, I exaggerated a bit about the difficulty. The expansion certainly presents a challenge, after all, it is FromSoftware DLC. However, the difficulty curve here feels significantly smoother compared to the main game, which makes the process more engaging.

Balance in Elden Ring has always been perceived as one of its weak points. During their journeys through the Betweenlands, players encounter sharp changes in difficulty: from a feeling of complete dominance over their opponents to instant death at the mere sight of an enemy. However, in this game, the progression is reminiscent of FromSoftware's previous projects. Players are gradually immersed in a ruined kingdom, mastering its mechanics and learning to overcome emerging threats. At the same time, the game offers increasingly difficult challenges, which makes the process of passing exciting and fascinating.

In addition, the DLC contains simpler opponents: for example, these strong, but clumsy blacksmithsScreenshot: Add-on Shadow of the Erdtree for the game Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

The rule about exploring the open world only applies if the player has invested enough time in it. This emphasizes the importance of the new leveling system that was implemented in the game. The new kingdom, developed by FromSoftware designers, truly deserves deep attention and immersion.

Day 4. Maps and Legends

The day after defeating Rellana, I met with Dane of the Dry Leaf Clan. This enemy isn't one of the game's main bosses, and the fight against him takes place in the inconspicuous ruins of a small town located off the main path.

I found him this way: after reaching the first Place of Grace in one of the locations, the name of which I can't reveal due to spoilers, I came across a note from Dane. In it, he invited me to travel east to fight him and prove my right to be called a warrior. I accepted the challenge and received Dane's hat and his fighting techniques, which made me an expert in kung fu. This experience became an important step on the path to mastery in martial arts.

This town didn't seem to offer much in the way of entertainment, but I decided to take a few minutes to explore and test out my new combat gloves. My decision proved wise: on the southern outskirts, I discovered a crack in the ground. Descending, I stumbled upon an underground tunnel that led to a village on the edge of the region. From there, paths opened to several bonus locations, significantly expanding my options for further adventures.

The Shadow Realm significantly exceeds the Tomb in size and complexity. If the Betweenlands could be called multi-layered, the new map opens up a world with endless interweaving and mysteries. Compared to the Shadow Realm, the Betweenlands seems flat, like the Earth in a conspiracy theory. This emphasizes the uniqueness and versatility of the new space, which brings new challenges and opportunities to the game.

Verticality plays such a significant role in Shadow of the Erdtree that at times the game can easily be classified as a platformer. Screenshot: Shadow of the Erdtree add-on for Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

In Shadow Realm, the developers combined the experience gained in creating the open world of Elden Ring with elements of the level design of the first parts of Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Like the kingdom of Lordran or the city of Yharnam, this world is an intricately woven knot containing many smaller knots. Diverse locations overlap, intertwine, and connect in unexpected places, creating a unique game space that immerses players in an atmosphere of mystery and exploration.

From the very first minutes, the game immerses you in a captivating world where green islands floating in the sky coexist with gloomy, foggy valleys located below. At the initial stage, you will hardly be able to figure out how to get to these mysterious places. You will only be able to explore most of the locations after dozens of hours, and this can be done in the most unexpected ways. You'll need to carefully explore the world and solve complex spatial puzzles to unlock new horizons and access new adventures.

Local castles often play a crucial role in the game's puzzles. In an interview conducted six months before the expansion's release, Hidetaka Miyazaki noted that his goal was to more closely integrate dungeons into the game's open world. The development team successfully implemented this idea, resulting in improved interaction between the game's locations and puzzles.

In the world of Betweenland, the largest dungeons are typically located on the outskirts, often at the boundaries of different locations and regions. Examples of such locations include the Chantry Quarter in Yharnam and the kingdom of Lothric from Dark Souls 3. These dungeons represent unique zones where players can encounter a variety of enemies and challenges, making them important elements of the gameplay. Such locations not only enrich the plot, but also create an atmosphere of mysticism and danger, attracting explorers and adventurers.

For example, the Haven of Shadows, the largest castle in the add-on, connects as many as six locations. Finding the exit to each of them is quite a task. Screenshot: Shadow of the Erdtree expansion for Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

The open world of Shadow of the Erdtree resembles a sprawling Metroidvania, where the familiar gameplay of Elden Ring is presented in a more concentrated format. The game still contains elements of conveyor belt content, such as soldier camps, but the developers have done everything possible to diversify the gameplay and improve the user experience. This allows players to dive deeper into the world, explore its secrets and discover unique mechanics that enrich the gaming experience.

Think of the Crucible Knights, soaring on golden wings. Yesterday, I visited an inconspicuous fort on the outskirts of the map and entered one of its rooms, where I encountered a boss knight using the same technique. After several battles, I managed to defeat the knight and earned the Ashes of War skill. This skill allows me to dive-bomb my enemies from the air and proved extremely useful later, as it allowed me to defeat one of the key story bosses. The Ashes of War skill opens up new tactical possibilities, making combat more dynamic and exciting.

I lost count of the number of times I opened the map in search of missed locations. Sometimes it seemed like I had reached a dead end, but suddenly new secret passages would appear before me, leading to unexplored places. These unexpected finds not only enriched my experience but also added intrigue to the game. Exploring the map became a true adventure for me, full of surprises and discoveries. Each time I found a new path, it inspired me to continue exploring and seek out even more hidden locations.

Some of them provide answers to questions raised in the main game. These answers can cause fear and anxiety.

Not far from the settlement of Belurat, I stumbled upon a prison—one of the new types of mini-dungeons. Inside, I met the ghost of a prisoner who told me about the process of creating the living clay jugs common in the Betweenlands. This information opened new horizons for me, as the jugs not only have unique properties but also play an important role in the culture and everyday life of the locals. Understanding such details enriches the experience and allows us to better understand the world of the Betweenlands.

Before reading this text, please be aware that it contains spoilers.

In our discussion, we will examine key plot points and characters in detail. We will focus on their development, conflicts, and significance in the overall narrative. This will help us better understand the meaning of the work and its impact on the audience.

Pay attention to details that can be crucial to the perception of the story. By analyzing characters and their interactions, we can uncover the main themes and ideas established by the author.

Thus, this text will be useful for those who want to delve into the analysis of the work and appreciate it from different perspectives.

Freshly roasted humans were used to create these pieces. Potters used their tools to transform them into an amorphous mass, which was then placed in a jug. This process emphasizes the uniqueness and originality of the craft, as well as its historical significance.

After this, you will no longer be able to look at living jugs in the same way. Screenshot: Shadow of the Erdtree add-on for the game Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

Leda later shared her opinion: "These people were not righteous. They were simply losers in the war."

Day 6. The Dark Underbelly

The Between-Land, devastated by the War of the Sundering, was not known for its joy and prosperity. However, it cannot compete with the grim conditions of the Shadow Realm.

Despite its dark backstory, the Elden Ring universe draws players in with its vibrant colors and the atmosphere of a bygone golden age. However, the dull tones and oppressive influence of the Tree of Blight create a mood reminiscent of Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne. This add-on not only continues the traditions of previous games, but also deepens them, immersing players in a familiar, but at the same time unique atmosphere.

In the add-on, the developers actively use the Gothic component of their signature aesthetic. Screenshot: Shadow of the Erdtree add-on for Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

In an interview after the announcement of Elden Ring, Hidetaka Miyazaki noted that he perceives the game's universe as a harsh wasteland. However, the Betweenlands seems to be a place that still has a chance for salvation. In contrast, the Shadowlands seem to have lost their chance for restoration long before my arrival. These lands are immersed in darkness and hopelessness, which emphasizes the contrast with the atmosphere of the Betweenlands, where hope and the possibility of change still exist.

One of the first peaceful characters I met on my journey was a local servant named Paltsev. She addressed me with an insult, calling me the son of a whore, and offered to either kill her or leave this place. Her reaction is difficult to blame. The inhabitants of these lands were not paragons of virtue, but they certainly did not deserve the fate that was in store for them.

Messmer's troops razed the local kingdoms to the ground. Screenshot: Shadow of the Erdtree add-on for Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

In some settlements, the locals were transformed into insectoid creatures by a disease. Others were destroyed by Messmer's army and its fire golems—horrific variations of the golem guardians, condemned to wander these desolate lands, stripped of their minds and transformed into silent embodiments of fear.

Messmer the Impaler, inspired by Vlad the Impaler, takes the throne in the Shadow Haven. He destroyed his mother's people at her behest, and as punishment, Marika, terrified by her son's serpentine form, imprisoned him and his army in the Shadow Realm. This is a story of betrayal and the consequences that lead to eternal imprisonment.

Screenshot: Shadow of the Erdtree add-on for Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

Just as Dark Souls 3 contrasted with the first two games in the series, the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion is a polar opposite to the main Elden Ring game. While Souls depicted the world in a state of decay due to the artificially prolonged Age of Fire, Shadow of the Erdtree explores the darker aspects of the Golden Order. This expansion deepens the understanding of the mythology and aesthetics of Elden Ring, offering players new horizons and dark secrets that previously remained out of sight.

In Shadow of the Erdtree, blessings, perceived as sacred gifts in the main game, are like hard drugs. One character persistently asked me for Marika's blessing, using the same language as a drug addict begging for his fix. The Tree of Decay in this context is presented as a shadow of the Erdtree, reflecting its dark side.

Screenshots: Add-on Shadow of the Erdtree for the game Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco
Screenshots: Add-on Shadow of the Erdtree for the game Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

The longer you watch what is happening, the more persistently the question arises: what could Mikella find in these mysterious and cursed lands?

Day 8. Search Party

The main characters of the expansion are also looking for an answer to the same question as I am, setting off in search of Mikella.

This diverse cast of characters, who once served various lords of the Between-earth, includes unique figures. Among them are Sir Ansbach, a former servant of Mog, and Freya, who once fought side by side with General Radan. Also present in this world is the giant Mur, who lacks maternal love. Each of these characters has their own unique history and personality, making them important elements of the rich mythology of the Between-earth.

Leda said that the only unifying link in this company is faith in Mikella. It was not for nothing that Malenia emphasized that her brother is endowed with the wisdom and charm of a god. That's why I repeatedly met significant characters at the Michela crosses, which made it much easier to understand the plot.

Screenshot: Shadow of the Erdtree add-on for Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

The story of Shadow of the Erdtree centers on the fate of a single demigod, allowing FromSoftware to achieve a balance between its signature allusive storytelling style and the more straightforward narrative approach of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. This approach draws attention to individual fates and adds intimacy and depth to the narrative, while remaining rooted in the world's overarching mythology. This creates a unique experience for players, who can immerse themselves in the story's detail and emotional intensity, discovering new facets of the universe.

Characters still prefer to communicate in riddles and conceal their true intentions, but their quests are now much easier to follow. Improved navigation and clearer information delivery make it easier for players to navigate character objectives and motivations. This allows you to more effectively plan your actions and achieve goals in the game.

FromSoftware also began using notes - and with their help you can understand where to go next. Screenshot: Add-on Shadow of the Erdtree for the game Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

The archaeological narrative remains an important element in the game, as the Shadow Realm holds many answers to questions raised by the main storyline. I recently discovered the last of these answers while wandering through the Côte d'Azur, a bonus area that lives up to its name. Vibrant blue flowers give this place a unique, filtered appearance, creating an atmosphere of mystery and beauty that makes it perfect for exploration.

On the northeastern coast, I stumbled upon a hidden path that led me to a unique location. Here were the enormous spider-hands that guarded Caria's estate from the main game, as well as the Fingers, which influenced events in the Betweenlands. This discovery was unexpected and fascinating, allowing us to dive deeper into the game's atmosphere and explore its hidden corners.

There isn't much loot scattered around the DLC map, but exploring it fills in many gaps in the main game's lore. Screenshot: Shadow of the Erdtree add-on for the game Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

Bonus locations offer interesting quests and additional lore elements. However, the main information and key plot events are available when following the main route. This allows you to focus on the important part of the story. The main plot is presented clearly and accessible, which helps players overcome many obstacles and meet memorable characters who act as bosses.

Day 10. It's Hard to Beat a God

In the process of fighting Messmer, I suffered over a hundred defeats, and I am primarily to blame for this. But I am not alone.

The bosses of Shadow of the Erdtree provoke active discussions among players, becoming the main target of criticism in the context of the DLC. Many users have accused FromSoftware and its director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, of giving bosses excessively high health and making their attacks appear too chaotic. Furthermore, players have noted the lack of counterattack opportunities between long combos, making progress difficult. These aspects are controversial and raise questions about the game's difficulty balance.

Most of these claims are incorrect. The reason is that these bosses do not create an artificially high level of difficulty compared to their counterparts in previous FromSoftware games, and especially not in Elden Ring. In fact, the battle mechanics and enemy difficulty remain consistent and logical, which makes the gameplay more engaging and deep.

Some bosses, such as the Golden Hippo, have hitbox issues that can be reminiscent of the Iron Golem from Dark Souls. Additionally, Shadow of the Erdtree has a number of optimization issues that cause frame rate drops at key moments. This makes it difficult for players to adequately react to the boss's attacks and degrades the overall gameplay experience.

The second phase of the final boss is a prime example of the "Random bullshit go!" memes, with so much happening on-screen that it's difficult to focus on reactions. This could likely be addressed in future updates. In particular, the developers recently added the ability to summon a mount during the final battle in the original game, which can make progression easier.

Sometimes you get stuck on a boss longer than planned. This happened to me when I encountered Messmer. Every time I convinced myself to stop trying and look for blessings, fate and my curiosity led me to corners of the world where blessings were absent.

Otherwise, if I encountered difficulties, I had only myself to blame. For example, Messmer, whom I spent over a hundred attempts on, fought fairly and valiantly. He gave hints about his attacks through animations in advance, opened up opportunities for counterattacks, and even provided a place of grace right in front of the arena so I could rest and return at any time. However, I still kept losing, getting angry, and trying to win again.

Ultimately, successfully defeating a boss requires mastering his combo attacks, and resisting the temptation to use rolls or heal at inopportune moments. The key is learning to effectively use short windows of time to counter. This is reminiscent of the gameplay in Dark Souls, where attention and precision are key to defeating enemies.

The boss designs in the games demonstrate impressive continuity, continuing to develop the ideas introduced in Dark Souls. Gameplay and narrative elements remain prominent in the new projects. For example, Messmer the Impaler can be considered a clear analogue to the Nameless King, who is also a royal scion exiled due to his association with blasphemous beings. This parallelism highlights not only the artistic sensibility but also the deep connection between the characters, making them even more memorable for players.

Romina Saint of Flowerbuds is a unique acid hybrid of Quelaag and Scorpion Najka, half human and half arthropod, suffering from a mysterious disease. The rotting knight resembles the Orphan of Kos in both appearance and attack style. In addition, the final boss is a clear homage to Artorias and the princes Lothric and Lorian, which emphasizes its significance in the game.

The Sword of the Rotting Knight strongly resembles the placenta that Orphan Kos beat us with. Screenshot: Shadow of the Erdtree add-on for the game Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

For 15 years, the FromSoftware team has been continuously developing and refining the gameplay ideas that were laid down in their first game, Demon’s Souls. These interconnections demonstrate the deep connection between the studio’s projects and show the evolution of their approach to creating unique gaming experiences.

In Shadow of the Erdtree, familiar motifs are given new meaning, allowing the developers to focus on the central idea that permeates all of FromSoftware’s works. This brings us to a key plot twist that reveals the depth and complexity of the game world.

Day 11. The Last

This turn of events is not entirely unexpected. The main game already hinted that Mikella isn't as kind as he's made out to be. In the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, his true intentions are gradually revealed midway through the story, but only after completing the corresponding quests. This adds depth to the character and highlights the complexity of his motives.

When I finally climbed the final steps of Enir-Ilim, the final castle in the game, I learned Mikella's true intentions. The reality turned out to be significantly darker than I expected.

Before reading this text, please note that it contains spoilers. We will discuss key plot points that may spoil your viewing or reading experience. If you haven't yet read the work, we recommend doing so before continuing. Otherwise, you risk learning important details that may affect your experience of the story. Be careful to avoid any unwanted revelations if you don't want to spoil the plot.

At the beginning of the text, I mentioned Mog as a villain, but in reality, he turns out to be a victim of circumstance. Mikella promised the Blood Lord the throne, but his true goal was to seize Mog's body so that his son, Mariki, could use it as a vehicle to resurrect General Radan. Thus, Mog finds himself embroiled in complex intrigues and manipulations, becoming a victim of someone else's ambitions.

Radan was chosen by the future god as his true consort. Mikella traveled to the Shadow Realm to revive him, as this place had become a haven for the souls of the departed. Here, at the top of the Tower of Shadows, he settled down and waited for the death of the general, who was at the gate formed by human bodies.

In essence, we are fighting with the body of Mog, disguised as RadanScreenshot: Add-on Shadow of the Erdtree for the game Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

Mikella managed to convince numerous Extinguished and other creatures to join his quest through a powerful spell. He used the same methods as Moga and Maleny, bewitching them and forcing them to fight and die for his own ends. This highlights his manipulative abilities and ability to use fear and force to achieve his goals.

Mikella does not know how to love. During his wanderings, he rejected not only his family, but also his capacity for compassion. He hid this part of his soul, known as the Holy Trine, in the most remote corner of the Shadow Realm, hoping that no one would be able to discover it.

The Holy Trine is the part of Mikella that he chose to discard. Screenshot: Shadow of the Erdtree expansion For the game Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

Michella, who advocates mercy, is in practice no different from his mother. He uses people to achieve his ambitions and abandons human values on the path to power. This similarity highlights how the desire for power can distort moral principles and destroy true values.

Marika's son became another manifestation of FromSoftware's key motif—the road to hell paved with good intentions. Mikella, like Marika or Gwyn, considers himself a savior, unaware that his methods of achieving his goals cause more harm to the world than the most terrible threat he himself has devised.

The demigod rightly points out that we, the Extinguished, are not so different from them in essence.

One of the last days, deviating from the main route, I met Egon, a dragon hunter whose life was ruined by the terrible dragon Bale. His legs refused to obey him, he was terrified of his enemy, but nevertheless he crawled up the mountain, seeking revenge for the suffering caused. Egon symbolizes fortitude and determination, even when strength is failing. His fight with the dragon demonstrates not only the physical but also the emotional challenges that dragon hunters endure.

Screenshots: Shadow of the Erdtree add-on for Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco
Screenshots: Add-on Shadow of the Erdtree for the game Elden Ring / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

At one moment, his strength left him, and, on the verge of death, he handed me his finger so that I could call on him in the battle with dragon. I complied with his request and witnessed one of the most powerful monologues in FromSoftware history, in which Egon curses Bale and threatens to tear his scales apart with a hail of harpoons. This moment highlights the depth of the characters and their motivations, making the game even more gripping.

The game's quest is an adaptation of Ahab's storyline from Moby-Dick, in which the ship's captain is obsessed with revenge against a huge whale for cutting off his leg. However, in the context of FromSoftware's work, other interesting parallels can be identified. The game not only conveys the spirit of the protagonist's struggle and obsession but also delves into themes of revenge and internal struggle, making the game more layered and rich. The quest's plot explores not only external conflicts but also psychological aspects, forcing the player to consider the consequences of their actions.

Before becoming a dragon hunter, Egon was a cowardly marauder. His life changed when he learned of the ritual of absorbing dragon hearts, a revelation that gave him a new direction. This plot twist resonates with the stories of many Miyazaki fans, who claim that these works helped them overcome depression, giving them a sense of triumph after overcoming adversity. In both cases, victory is achieved through struggle, and this struggle becomes a symbol of internal transformation.

We often justify our actions by saying that the world is already full of destruction, and our actions supposedly lead to something good. But is this really true? We without hesitation exterminate entire nations on the path to the throne of Elden, simply following directions, without thinking about the consequences.

Every difficult boss and challenging episode becomes a true test for us, like Moby Dick. It is a challenge that we are obliged to accept in order to confirm our own strength and ability to overcome difficulties.

FromSoftware's game again forced me to reexamine my inner motives, but this time it did so with particular frankness.

The end result was not a triumph, but a source of sadness - both from the end and from the realization that my efforts had only deepened the emptiness and lifelessness of this world. In this context, Shadow of the Erdtree becomes a shining example of FromSoftware's creative philosophy, demonstrating their unique approach to creating atmospheric and deep game worlds.
