Released in 1997, Grand Theft Auto was one of the first games to feature an antagonist as the protagonist. At the start, players could choose from eight characters, but the gameplay for each remained the same. Grand Theft Auto set new standards for the genre and opened the door for subsequent games in which moral boundaries become blurred.
In GTA 2, the main character is Claude Speed. He returns to the criminal world after being released from prison, and this moment becomes the starting point of his further adventures. Information about his past and motivations remains a mystery, which adds intrigue to the game's plot. Claude Speed becomes a symbol of the struggle for survival in an aggressive urban environment where crime and violence are the norm.
The protagonist of the GTA series, Claude, continues his story in the third part, although this character is different from Claude from GTA 3. With the transition to full 3D, the game has a clear storyline. While GTA 3's plot is a classic crime story set in New York City, GTA: Vice City borrows the atmosphere of 1980s Miami and is inspired by the 1983 film Scarface. GTA: San Andreas centers on the protagonist, CJ,'s conflict with corrupt police officers and gang warfare. This game introduced a character progression system, allowing players to customize their character. San Andreas introduces various elements, such as clothing stores, tattoo parlors, and gyms, where players can improve CJ's physical fitness. The game also features diners, frequent visits to which affect the character's weight gain. For the first time in the series, players can experience hunger, which directly affects the hero's characteristics. Franklin is the most balanced character with wide customization options. Trevor embodies chaos and madness in all its forms. Players can try their hand at being a taxi driver, firefighter, medic, or police officer, which adds variety to the gameplay and adds new elements to open-world exploration. These activities allow for a deeper immersion in the city atmosphere and offer alternative ways to interact with the game.
Players receive bonuses for performing stunts, which serves as additional motivation for exploring the map. When Claude enters a certain type of vehicle, which appears to be a regular car, a side mission is activated, requiring the player to collect checkpoints within a limited time. Random encounters have been introduced in Liberty City: certain NPCs have begun offering side missions right on the city streets. This adds variety to the gameplay and allows players to earn additional points and rewards.
In GTA 5, heists play a significant role in the gameplay. When arrested, the player loses not only weapons and armor, but also some of their finances. An effective way to avoid arrest is to repaint the car at a specialized workshop, which allows you to conceal your identity and reduce police attention.
The chase mechanics were retained in subsequent installments of the series, but the scale of these chases has increased significantly. Depending on the number of stars that replace the officers' heads, the player encounters a variety of enemies, including helicopters, SWAT teams, military forces, and tanks. In GTA 4, the developers updated the wanted system, introducing new mechanics.
