The game takes place in a fictional country known as Heideia. This country suffers from many problems: a protracted conflict has led to the devastation of many settlements, and as a result, the country closed its borders to the outside world, slowly plunging into the abyss of internal crises. In addition, a mysterious cataclysm occurred on its territory, which led to the appearance of enigmatic supernatural creatures that pose a danger to the locals.

The main character, a young soldier named Remy, was born in Heideia. As a child, his mother, seeking a better future for her son, secretly took him outside of her homeland, ultimately leaving him without parental care and disappearing without a trace. As an adult, Remy decided to find out the fates of his parents and other loved ones who remained in Heideia. In light of this, he decided to return to his homeland: he would illegally cross the border and try to find answers to the questions that had plagued him for many years.

In the recently released gameplay trailer for Hell is Us, Jonathan Jacques-Belletet emphasized that for the main character, the territory of Heideia is a completely unfamiliar, dangerous, and hostile space full of mysteries. Interestingly, the game will not provide the player with explicit clues, and the plot will not lead the hero by the hand throughout the story. Players will have to actively interact with the NPCs inhabiting this world, memorize their lines, and navigate the locations independently, as there are no obvious markers or marks on the map.
