A startup from our own developments

We started working together when we realized that our skills in game development could be successfully applied in the B2B segment. The shift from the gaming industry to business solutions was driven by the desire to create more functional products that could meet the needs of companies. We realized that our experience in creating interactive content and user interfaces could significantly improve business processes. This solution allowed us to apply the creative approach we developed in game development to solving real-life customer problems in the B2B sphere.

The CEO of Balancy is the key figure responsible for strategic management and the overall direction of the business. The CEO's most important role is to build an effective team, make key decisions, and determine the company's development strategy. Andrey and I met through World of Warcraft, although we had known each other since school. Since 2011, we began creating small mobile games together in a self-published format, combining this passion with our main jobs. In 2014, while developing the cross-platform MOBA UnnyWorld, we decided to develop our own startup, which later transformed into the Balancy service. I took the position of CEO, and Andrey became CTO, which allowed us to effectively distribute roles and responsibilities within the team.

Our startup arose from the idea of ​​solving a specific problem that many people were facing. We noticed a gap in the market for an effective solution that could meet user needs. After conducting research and analyzing competitors, we realized we could offer an innovative product that would not only make people's lives easier but also improve their experience. Our team joined forces to develop a unique proposition, which became the foundation for our startup. We strive not only for commercial success but also for a positive impact on society.

Pavel Ignatov: In the beginning, we developed various tools for our own needs while working on our fourth game, which we completed support for in 2018. When we started a new project, we were faced with having to re-create similar solutions. The previously developed tools were tailored for a specific game and did not meet the requirements of the new project.

Game development requires a set of tools that enable effective data management and remote control. This becomes especially relevant for projects with frequent iterations, as constantly rebuilding game builds can be inefficient. Some settings are indeed available directly in the game engines, but for full-fledged content management and promotions organization, it is necessary to integrate additional functions into the project. After discussions, we came to the conclusion that it was necessary to create our own set of tools, which was subsequently transformed into the Balancy project.

Balancy offers a set of tools designed to optimize financial processes and budget management. The main goal of Balancy is to simplify financial planning and provide users with easy access to analytical data. The set of tools includes functions for tracking expenses, creating budgets, forecasting financial flows, and analyzing cash flow. These tools help users make informed financial decisions and manage their finances more effectively. Balancy also offers integration with other financial services, allowing users to gain a complete overview of their finances in one place. Pavel Ignatov: In modern, content-rich games, each weapon has its own unique card with specific characteristics. Our software provides developers with convenient tools for storing this data and working with it remotely. This includes the ability to make changes and test weapon parameters, which significantly simplifies the development process and improves the quality of the final product. This service was initially developed to support our future projects, regardless of genre. With this tool, the developer can easily enter information about the game and its entities. For example, for quests, we provide entry of task details, including the title, rewards, duration, and completion conditions. After that, the tool automatically adapts to the game's underlying system, ensuring flexibility and convenience during development.

While developing our suite of solutions, our friends at Red Machine Games, who had previously created casual games, began working on their first midcore project. They needed an efficient way to manage in-game balance. We shared our developments and offered to test our tool in their game. This is how we landed our first client. They developed the game, and we adapted our tool, conducting real-world testing. If the developers had requests for additional features, we quickly implemented improvements. This collaboration became the foundation for our first year of operation.

The startup became a standalone brand when it reached key development stages, such as establishing a unique offering and building a stable customer base. This process typically involves branding development, a marketing strategy, and active market promotion. Recognizing its uniqueness and delivering value to customers were key factors in the startup's transformation into a full-fledged brand. Thus, the transition from a startup to an independent brand is an important milestone in a business, impacting its future growth and competitiveness.

Pavel Ignatov: After a year of collaboration, our relationship with Red Machine Games reached a commercial level. The team highly appreciated our product, which significantly simplified our collaboration. Previously, all data was stored in Google Sheets or integrated directly into the game code. Now, the studio has signed up all its future projects to our service, opening up new opportunities for joint development and improving game content.

This has been a great incentive for our further development. We focused not only on our own interests but also on the needs of other developers. As a result, we began to seek new clients and investment opportunities, while also continuing to develop existing solutions. In 2021, one of these solutions was game data management tools, which did not require LiveOps enhancements. We currently offer services that include effective LiveOps solutions, enabling our clients to optimize processes and enhance the gaming experience.

LiveOps is an approach to managing and supporting online games and services that incorporates regular content updates, events, and active player engagement. This method allows developers to adapt game mechanics in real time, improving user experience and audience retention. LiveOps incorporates analytics data that helps teams better understand player behavior, which in turn enables the creation of more engaging and engaging game offerings. Using LiveOps, developers can quickly respond to user feedback, resolve issues, and implement new features, making games more dynamic and relevant. Effective implementation of LiveOps contributes to revenue growth and an increase in the number of active users, which is a key factor in the success of modern games and services.

Pavel Ignatov explains that LiveOps refers to the global personalization of data in games. This means that the game can be adapted to different categories of players. For example, premium players have access to unique items in the in-game store, while those less inclined to spend money see a different selection. Additionally, there is a segment of players who actively purchase resources, such as energy. The store is also optimized for this group, offering more offers on energy items.

The game adapts to the needs and preferences of each player, maximizing the value of gaming sessions and increasing the likelihood of user return. All changes to the gameplay occur dynamically, providing a unique experience for each participant.

Imagine a situation where a player encounters a boss in a game. Some users successfully complete it on their first try, while others become stuck and are unable to defeat the opponent. Analyzing statistics, the developer notices that players often leave the game after three consecutive losses. This can lead to a loss of loyal players. However, there is a way to prevent this. Using special tools, players can be offered the opportunity to purchase a token or item at a significant discount, for example, 90%, after two losses. This increases the likelihood that the player will take advantage of the offer and, for a small sum, acquire a powerful artifact that will help them achieve victory. This approach not only maintains user interest but also encourages their continued participation in the game.

This system helps reduce the likelihood of players leaving after a third loss and increases the chances of expanding the loyal customer base. Loyal users, in turn, benefit from successfully completing difficult levels and defeating challenging opponents, which brings them satisfaction and joy.

LiveOps solutions are essential for many projects, especially in the gaming and digital services industries. They are particularly useful for multiplayer online games, which require constant content updates and player support. LiveOps solutions are also relevant for mobile apps, where user retention and active engagement are crucial. Projects focused on a subscription model can benefit from LiveOps, providing regular updates and events to maintain user interest. Furthermore, e-commerce companies can use LiveOps to optimize the user experience and increase conversions through personalized offers and promotions. Overall, any project seeking to improve user engagement and adapt to their needs can significantly benefit from implementing LiveOps solutions.

Pavel Ignatov emphasizes that the LiveOps concept is primarily suitable for mobile games with a free-to-play (F2P) model. Unlike mobile platforms, PC games hosted on Steam do not require strict moderation, allowing developers to avoid complex update systems and simply implement changes in new builds. This often results in large updates, up to 40 GB in size, although the substantive changes may be minimal. In mobile games, especially on the Google Play platform, the update moderation process takes about three days. If a developer has two to three updates per week, this creates significant delays, as the waiting time affects the ability to promptly change balance and other game elements. Thus, LiveOps becomes an important tool for promptly responding to player requests and maintaining the relevance of game content in mobile games.

In mobile games, LiveOps is important for assessing the impact of new features on player behavior. This requires waiting several days for the changes to reach users and then analyzing the data. If the results are unsatisfactory, a new update will be required. The Balancy system offers a solution by allowing balance changes to be made without having to upload a new build to the platform, enabling instant testing of updates and rapid response. This significantly accelerates the process of optimizing the gaming experience and increases player satisfaction.

Moving to Cyprus

Your startup demonstrated excellent results until the end of February 2022. Since then, the situation has changed. We faced new challenges and the need to adapt to changing market conditions. This required a rethinking of strategies and the implementation of innovative approaches to maintain sustainability and growth. We began actively analyzing customer needs and adapting our product to meet these new realities. Such changes allowed us not only to maintain the business, but also to find new opportunities for development.

Possessing deep knowledge and experience, I am engaged in the development of innovative solutions for the gaming industry. My goal is not only to create high-quality products but also to contribute to the development of game development by sharing knowledge and best practices with colleagues and the community.

In early February 2022, we began receiving investment proposals. However, we soon had to suspend all processes due to the unstable situation and uncertainty. Blocked payment systems made it impossible to receive transfers, which exacerbated the situation. Ultimately, we were required to relocate to another country. Until this happens, our startup's development will remain frozen.

We actively sought solutions to attract the investment necessary to expand our business. As a result, we contacted a potential investor from Cyprus and met with them at the Emerge conference in Yerevan, where we discussed all the terms of cooperation. In early July, we arrived in Cyprus, choosing a travel date to avoid tax residency. This decision allowed us to move to another country and receive the first investments from our partner.

Andrey Apanasik: In our situation, the choice was limited. The investor, located in Cyprus, has an extensive network of contacts, which allows him to effectively resolve various issues. That is why we decided to relax in Cyprus.

Investors from Canada offered the opportunity to cooperate, and we might have considered moving to this country if the Cyprus option had not arisen. However, the choice of country in the current situation is limited. Possible destinations include Serbia, Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, and Portugal, as well as Cyprus. It is important to keep in mind that each of these countries has its own visa requirements, and there is also a risk of deterioration in the geopolitical situation. Therefore, when choosing a country to move to, it is necessary to carefully analyze all aspects, including safety and living conditions.

Many people face various difficulties when moving. One of the main problems is organizing the process of packing and transporting things. Sorting through your belongings and choosing what to keep, throw away, or donate can be stressful. Finding suitable housing can also be challenging, especially if moving to another city or country. Factors such as rent, location, and infrastructure must be considered.

Another major challenge is adapting to a new location. This may include meeting new neighbors, finding work and educational institutions, and adapting to the local culture and lifestyle. Relocating is not only a physical change of residence but also a psychological adjustment, requiring time and effort to adapt comfortably.

Andrei Apanasik notes that the banking system in Cyprus operates according to specific rules. Strict controls over financial transactions are in place, requiring clients to provide numerous documents when opening an account. To open an account for an individual, it is necessary to provide a contract with the employer as proof of employment, as well as receipts for rent and other supporting documents. This approach ensures the security and transparency of financial transactions in Cyprus.

Overall, we encountered no significant problems when registering and closing a business in the UAE. Compared to other countries I've visited, the process here is significantly faster and simpler. There are companies that help with legal matters, making life more comfortable for expats. Renting a home is also easy thanks to the Bazaraki platform, similar to Avito. Additionally, there are numerous Telegram channels for expats created by Oleg Reshetnikov, where you can find information on various topics, including IT, apartment rentals, and kindergartens. The locals are always friendly and helpful, creating a pleasant atmosphere for new residents. After moving to the UAE, I felt psychological relief, especially given the tension in Russia until February last year.

  • Safety. During my entire stay, I did not meet any police officers at all. I saw only one car on the highway, and that was it. I also did not hear about any crimes. But they say that incidents mostly happen in villages.
  • Low prices. A kilogram of pomegranates costs 1-2 euros. Overall, if you convert prices into rubles at the current exchange rate, it turns out that food is now cheaper than in Russia. As for rent, we rent a three-room apartment near the sea in a good area of ​​Larnaca for 700 euros a month. Now living is cheaper than when I lived in Moscow: just for rent and food, I spent about 50-60 thousand rubles, not counting metro rides. Therefore, living in Cyprus is really cheaper, unless you do what most people do and for some reason gravitate to Limassol. Just think of Georgia. Everyone goes to Tbilisi, although there are other cities in the country. Does it matter which region you live in if you work remotely? The main thing is to have internet.
  • By the way, Cyprus has full 5G coverage, but the connection may be worse in the mountainous regions. When we rented a house upon arrival, we lived solely on mobile internet.
  • There are a lot of people from Russia. This is both a plus and a minus. On the one hand, it's bad when you arrive in a new country and have no one to talk to and meet. But here, it's enough to go to a Larnaca chat room and you can immediately make new acquaintances. On the other hand, when people move to another country, they try to unite and create so-called hubs. Since they are satisfied with communicating with each other, they continue to live in their own cultural vacuum and don't try to integrate into the local culture. This isn't necessarily bad, but it's not good either. If you want to live in another country, it's best to first establish contacts with the local population.
  • Since Cyprus is part of the European Union, visa holders have certain advantages: with a local ID, the chances of obtaining a Schengen visa are significantly increased, unlike the situation in Georgia and Armenia. Also, the tax rate varies depending on salary. With an annual income of up to €19,500, you don't have to pay taxes.

Relocating to Cyprus may be attractive to many, but there are also reasons to reconsider. Firstly, the high standard of living on the island can lead to significant expenses for housing and daily needs. Furthermore, the labor market in Cyprus can be limited, especially in specialized fields, making it difficult to find work. It's also important to consider the language barrier if you don't speak Greek or English, which can complicate integration into local society. Finally, the climate, although pleasant for most, may not be suitable for people sensitive to heat or humidity. All these factors should be carefully considered before deciding to relocate to Cyprus.

Pavel Ignatov argues that the presence of disadvantages complicates the situation. Prices in this region may be higher, but this depends on the country being compared. For example, in Belgrade, Serbia, the cost of living is two to three times higher. Compared to Moscow, as Andrey already mentioned, prices are similar. However, the food basket here is significantly cheaper than in Moscow, about half that.

More One reason is that getting here is only possible via transit routes. For some people, long flights can be a serious obstacle, but for us, it's not a problem. Ultimately, I have no additional reasons for moving here.

  • The geopolitical situation in the north. There is a risk of escalation.
  • We personally have not yet encountered anything similar, but they say that nepotism is rampant in government structures. It is allegedly difficult to obtain or organize anything without connections in this field.
  • The delivery and taxi systems are poorly developed. This applies not only to the delivery of food but also other goods. In Russia, it's much easier.
  • Personally, I really don't like the climate. It's extremely hot in the summer and cold in the winter because there's no central heating. Meanwhile, electricity prices are sky-high: it can cost up to €400 a month.

It should be noted that not all income meets the visa criteria. Different types of income may not be taken into account, which may affect your chances of successfully obtaining a visa. It's important to carefully review the requirements and conditions to ensure you meet all the necessary standards.

Andrey Apanasik emphasizes that this situation is not unique to Cyprus. Traveling to another country without a steady source of income may not be the smartest decision. Even with a financial cushion, there's always the need to look for work, even if it's temporary, to avoid financial difficulties and ensure a stable existence.

Pavel Ignatov notes that it's easier to find a job in Cyprus if you already have an offer from a company or if you arrive with an employment contract, which doesn't necessarily have to be concluded in Cyprus. This opens up additional opportunities for applicants wishing to work on this island.

About the current situation

Andrey, you manage your Telegram channel and VKontakte group, and also closely follow the development of the gaming industry. How do you see the current state of this sector in Russia?

Andrey Apanasik notes that the situation in the industry and the economy is causing significant concern. Indie developers face significant difficulties, since they cannot simply register a company abroad and open a bank account for financial transactions. For example, accessing Steam Direct and registering a slot for publishing a game on this platform becomes problematic due to restrictions on the use of Russian cards. These barriers significantly complicate the process of entering international markets for game developers from Russia.

It is possible to find an intermediary to help organize the process. However, once sales begin, it will be difficult for the developer to transfer funds directly to a Russian bank, since an intermediary bank will be required. This creates the need to once again find someone or travel to another country to open an account. This situation presents a serious challenge for independent developers and small studios.

Large companies such as Game Insight and Belka Games have significantly reduced their presence in the Russian market. This has occurred, in part, as a result of restrictions on financial transactions and concerns about the potential loss of cooperation with Western partners. For an American company, collaborating with a Russian studio could lead to negative consequences, primarily due to the established reputation for toxicity.

Hiring in Russia has also undergone changes. Previously, many specialists worked for Western companies through outsourcing, but they are now facing contract rejections. Some companies, such as Crazy Panda, which created games for the Russian market on the VK and Odnoklassniki platforms, have a chance of survival. In this new reality, it's important to adapt to changing market demands and seek opportunities for development within the country.

The situation on Google Play remains challenging for Russian developers. Even with a Russian account, they face the inability to receive funds. Transferring funds to your account requires registering a legal entity, which presents significant challenges. As a result, the market is experiencing a serious crisis, which negatively affects developers and their opportunities for further growth and development.

Numerous indie studios, such as Morteshka, Ice-Pick Lodge, and others, continue to operate actively in Russia. The reasons why they are reluctant to leave the country are varied. Firstly, many of these studios have strong roots and are tied to the local culture, allowing them to create unique content that is in demand across a range of niches. Secondly, in 2023, indie developers have the opportunity to adapt to changing market conditions, develop local communities, and find new ways to monetize their projects, including crowdfunding and collaboration with international platforms.

Thus, indie studios in Russia have every chance of successfully developing while remaining true to their artistic principles and local traditions.

Andrey Apanasik wonders why some don't make efforts to change their situation. Those with the opportunity often choose to move, while others stay and seek alternative paths. Morteshka, a small studio, is an example. In theory, the developers can sustain themselves for a long time thanks to revenue from sales of previous games. Their new game, "Moose Man," was recently released on the VK Play platform. Since February of last year, there has been active discussion at meetups about vacant niches and new opportunities in Russia. However, it's important to note that the Russian market is not as large as many people think. For international releases, the majority of buyers come from the US. For example, some believe that the Russian audience significantly contributes to traffic for CD Projekt RED games. In fact, sales in Russia account for only 5.4% of the company's total revenue. This confirms that while Russian players do contribute, they are not the primary audience. Assessing the true impact of the Russian market on the global gaming industry reveals the need to seek new strategies to attract international players and expand their own market. The remaining developers are actively seeking alternative platforms, such as VK Play. Morteshka's games on this platform have the potential for success thanks to their unique setting. However, it is too early to draw definitive conclusions. Atomic Heart is scheduled for an exclusive release on VK Play in February 2023. If the game proves successful, it could attract other developers to release their projects on this platform.

The issue of government support for the gaming industry in Russia is currently being actively discussed online. Despite some community skepticism about such initiatives, there is a possibility that they could have a positive impact on the industry's development. Government support could include financial subsidies, tax incentives, and specialist training programs, which in turn would increase the competitiveness of Russian developers on the international stage. It is important to note that the successful implementation of such measures depends on their proper implementation and cooperation between the government and business.

Andrey Apanasik notes that the current situation with applying for government grants leaves much to be desired. For example, the recent case of Watt Studio highlights the controversial nature of this approach. There are several unclear points that affect both applicants and government agencies. The main problem is that funding is provided in tranches and upon completion of work, which can come as a surprise to many. Often, project creators are unaware of these conditions and, having received the promised support, find themselves in a difficult situation. Furthermore, it's important to understand that the government allocates funds for game development for a reason. Projects must fit a specific theme and be aimed at creating a positive image of the country and its values. This makes the grant process more complex and requires developers to carefully craft their ideas. Pavel Ignatov noted that the Russian gaming market is limited. Developers shouldn't expect games funded by the state budget to be popular outside the country. Within Russia, there are also not many people willing to play these games and pay for them. This could lead to the creation of yet another project that fails to find an audience. However, for developers, such experience can be beneficial professionally.

When developing projects, there is a serious risk that can negatively impact a developer's career. The opportunity to receive a one-time payment for work leaves the developer without further prospects, which jeopardizes their reputation. As a result, other potential clients may refuse to collaborate. In addition, there is the risk of becoming dependent on orders from state companies, which may set their own terms. In such a situation, the developer, having no alternatives, finds themselves in a difficult position and is forced to accept terms that may not correspond to their interests.

In a global context, government support for game development is indeed important. However, such assistance should be organized more effectively. For example, in Canada, developers have the opportunity to reclaim taxes paid for employees. This creates incentives for managers to hire qualified specialists and develop large companies. Such measures can significantly contribute to the growth of the industry, increasing the number of jobs and improving the quality of gaming products.

Andrey Apanasik notes that in Europe there are tax incentives for game developers, which are actively used by companies such as Ubisoft. These incentives promote the development of the gaming industry and attract investors, creating a favorable environment for growth and innovation in the video game industry.

Pavel Ignatov notes that countries' desire to attract more companies to the gaming industry is entirely justified, as this sector generates significant revenue. However, unfortunately, developer support in Russia is currently focused on other goals. This creates barriers to the full development of the gaming industry in the country and hinders the growth of innovative projects.

Young people looking to enter the game development industry should consider several options. Creating a small game can be an excellent way to demonstrate professional skills and the ability to complete projects. A successful release will open up opportunities for collaboration with publishers, which, in turn, can lead to promising publishing offers and subsequent relocation. I myself went through a similar path: I started as a C# developer, then worked with Android, and only then ended up in game development. In this field, I was mainly involved in backend development and used Java. This transition allows you not only to develop the necessary skills but also to be better prepared for the challenges that game developers face.

Starting a career in IT and considering relocation is a smart move for long-term professional development. Life goes on beyond your 20s and 30s; everyone has the opportunity to prepare for relocation and then pursue their dreams. In the current environment, realizing professional ambitions in Russia is becoming increasingly difficult, both due to the geopolitical situation and the unstable economy. The situation at StopGame appears more positive, as this portal initially focused on video and continues to develop thanks to creative content. However, if the creators of this content decide to focus on developing their personal brands, this could negatively impact the resource. Igromania, in turn, also produces video content, but uses engaging previews with host Dasha Ostrovskaya to attract and retain audiences. It's worth noting that many contributors have left the publication, which could lead to changes in content quality and diversity. iXBT.com has successfully maintained its relevance by focusing on computer hardware and technology. This allows the portal to adapt to changes in the industry: if the publication was initially diversified, it can effectively switch to new directions, which contributes to its survival and development in the rapidly changing information space.

Andrey, why did you leave DTF? You previously actively published materials about game development.

Andrey Apanasik notes that the administration's decision to redesign the platform, in particular the abolition of dislikes on posts, was the last straw for many users. This change was adopted in a similar way to YouTube, but raised a lot of questions and discontent in the community. The administration's response to the criticism was insufficiently tactful, which exacerbated the situation. Even the resource's employees disagree with this position, but for a number of objective reasons, they cannot openly express their opinion. The only one who dared to express criticism was the fired author Nikita Vasiliev, who made a remark to the manager about this change.

The resource's administration policy raises questions. Lately, there has been inconsistency: content fluctuates between games, movies, and Reddit discussions. DTF newsletters for popular posts have become a source of memes on Twitter. The algorithm, set up to automatically include posts with several thousand likes in collections, results in users receiving emails not containing informative articles but, for example, messages about a redesign containing profanity. It's worth noting that this tool is managed by a technical team, and the DTF editorial team cannot independently correct the situation. Personally, I'm a bit tired of this and decided to take a break. Perhaps I'll return later.

Currently, there are no alternatives to DTF. On this platform, my posts garnered between 1,000 and 2,000 likes and at least 2,000 views. If the material went viral, the number of views could reach 100,000, as happened with the Atomic Heart investigation. StopGame has significantly fewer active users, and posts in the "Blogs" section typically don't garner more than 10 comments, as the focus is on video content.

This decision is driven by the company's strategy aimed at maintaining independence and control over projects. Investments from gaming companies can impact our creativity and freedom in development. We prefer to work in an environment that fosters innovation and development, independent of external factors.

Andrey Apanasik: Let's consider a situation where a mobile gaming company invests in our project. Our clients maintain a balance in the service that is linked to similar projects. In this case, they may have concerns: if a startup has such investors, it may use their balance, which requires significant time, money, and effort to calculate. This could lead to the loss of a large number of clients, which is absolutely not in our interests.

We plan to further develop our business by implementing new technologies and improving customer service. Our primary focus will be on expanding our product range and streamlining processes to increase efficiency. We are also considering entering new markets and strengthening our positions in existing segments. Our goal is to create a sustainable and competitive business that will meet the demands of modern consumers and adapt to market changes.

Pavel Ignatov reports on the expansion of the team over the past year. Two developers and a business development specialist have joined the company. We are currently actively collaborating with new business development to expand our client base by the end of January.

As the company grows, we intend to attract investment. We already have several investors who have expressed preliminary commitment, but we need to find a lead investor. Even if some guides are difficult to access, there are numerous forums, groups, and channels where you can get professional advice and support.

To succeed, it's important to overcome your doubts and let go of the "I can't do it" mentality. Don't dwell on the negative. Instead, believe that with enough effort and persistence, you can achieve any goal. With this mindset, you can overcome many difficulties. It's important to surround yourself with like-minded people and create together. Remaining passive and complaining about your circumstances is not the best path. Nobody will do it for you.
