In an interview, Nikolai Dybovsky noted that the Ice-Pick Lodge studio "creates not attractions, but torture chambers." This statement perfectly captures the essence of all the company's games, especially in relation to Pathologic. The 2019 remake, Pathologic 2, has undergone significant changes, but has not become easier. On the contrary, it turned out to be in many ways more difficult than the 2005 original. The game constantly immerses the player in an atmosphere of stress, putting pressure on them and introducing mechanisms that penalize death. Pathologic 2 provides a unique experience that requires players not only skill, but also the ability to cope with emotional and psychological challenges.

Pathologic 3 is coming soon, and the demo has been available since March 17th. In this game, the Bachelor's route has changed dramatically, both in mechanics and in mood. In a recent interview, Narrative Director Alfina (Alexandra Golubeva) noted that Pathologic 3 will be an excellent starting point for new players, as the entry barrier will be significantly lower.

Is this true? Judging by the demo, it seems unlikely. This game promises to be an amazing experience for players, but the barrier to entry here seems even higher than in Pathologic 2.

The Bachelor in Pathologic 2 is a rational physician focused on combating diseases in the City on Gorkhon. His approach to problem-solving is based on logic and scientific methods, making him more relatable to players. In contrast, the Haruspex is a mystical character who grew up in the region and has a deeper understanding of its secrets and peculiarities. His perception of the world and the Steppe environment differ from the Bachelor's rational approach. This contrast between the two characters creates a unique dynamic in the game, allowing players to explore different aspects of the plot and interactions with the surrounding world. Understanding these differences enriches the gameplay experience and deepens engagement with the story.

Mysticism and the Steppe remain integral aspects of this world, and they must be interacted with. The City on Gorkhon has a unique structure that requires thoughtful and step-by-step exploration. Pathologic 3 features time-jumping elements, allowing the player to delve deeper into the story. The Bachelor discusses key moments in his story with the Inspector, which somewhat simplifies the complex narrative.

Events in the game can be revisited and changed, as time is nonlinear. The demo, dedicated to Day Five, immerses the player in an atmosphere where the plague is already actively spreading. Characters such as the Odongi and the Steppe Sisters express concern. One of the patients shares information about the Termitary, and on the street, the player may encounter the Changeling, who mentions her twin. Shabnak suddenly appears, adding intrigue to the proceedings. This situation can be challenging for a newcomer, but the key to understanding lies in carefully studying the interactions and traits of each character, as well as exploring the surrounding world.

The best way to get acquainted with the world of "Pathologic" is with the game Pathologic 2. This game is ideal Suitable for a first immersion into the unique atmosphere of the universe. As the Haruspex, the player will be rushed, but the events unfold sequentially, and information is presented gradually, making it easier to comprehend. In contrast, Pathologic 3, judging by the demo, offers a more fragmented approach to the plot, which is part of its concept. Even in the key art, the Bachelor's face appears as a broken reflection, emphasizing the need to assemble and reassemble plot elements. Therefore, before diving into Pathologic 3, it is useful to familiarize yourself with the main events and characters of the previous games. The games differ significantly from each other. Pathologic 2 can be classified as a survival game, as the main character, the Haruspex, is tasked with foraging and is forced to sleep to survive. Sometimes he must barter for food and other resources, find them on corpses, or even search the homes of locals. In contrast, the Bachelor's story emphasizes scientific research and higher-order problem solving, highlighting the characters' different approaches and motivations.

The Bachelor acts as the main coordinator in the fight against epidemics. He makes key management decisions, such as introducing quarantines, which can cause discontent among the population and even protests. However, he is not afraid to immerse himself in the process and take an active part in the work. The demonstration showed the process of diagnosing diseases, and in one case, to more fully understand the situation, it was necessary not only to conduct an examination but also to visit the patient at home to learn more about their living conditions. Each such story is unique and adds interest to the process of fighting epidemics.

Diagnostics is a key element of the game and its central concept. This is the aspect that the Bachelor was supposed to deal with back in the 2005 game "Pathologic. Utopia." The process of comparing symptoms, conducting examinations, and making diagnoses become the basis for developing a vaccine. The importance of diagnostics in the game cannot be overstated, as it determines the further development of events and the player's strategies. The ability to correctly assess a situation and make informed decisions contributes to a successful outcome, making each session unique and engaging.

The process of diagnosing a disease is an engaging and multifaceted approach. First, a patient interview is conducted to determine their complaints and medical history. This is followed by a visual examination, during which it is important to note all manifestations of the disease. After this, the identified symptoms are recorded on a special tablet. Based on the collected data, a diagnosis can be established. However, there is a possibility that the diagnosis will remain unclear, in which case a home visit may be necessary for a more detailed examination. It is important to remember that an incorrect diagnosis can lead to ineffective treatment and worsening of the patient's condition. Therefore, accuracy at every stage of the diagnostic process is paramount.

In context «go» I mean "moving around the map." This is probably one of the main shortcomings of Pathologic 3. Perhaps the decision is due to technical limitations, but the game lacks an open world. Walking around the autumnal, gloomy, but cozy city was an important part of the atmosphere, and its absence reduces immersion in the gameplay.

The city consists of small districts that can be left by passing through an arch with a clock. After this, a map opens, from which you can select the desired destination. However, difficulties can arise along the way. In the demo version of the game, the character, the Bachelor, does not bypass the infected and rebellious districts, but runs through them, which leads to clashes in boring and monotonous locations. The player can try to intimidate the bandits inhabiting these areas with a pistol, but it is much easier to simply run to the next arch with a clock. As a result, this hinders the full exploration of the city and reduces the interest in exploring it.

In The game's demo includes episodes related to the plague, but they appear less engaging. The Bachelor character has an experimental gadget that must be activated when dark flashes appear on the ground. In the original version of "Pathologic," dodging flying clouds of plague wasn't particularly engaging, but judging by the demo, the current implementation is even less so. Hopefully, the final version of the game won't require constant encounters with infected and rebellious areas. The question remains: will it be possible to bypass these dangerous zones without encounters?

Bachelors don't require constant feeding, but resource management becomes necessary. They must balance between states of apathy and mania, taking various drugs. The authors describe this as mental metabolism. Both states have their negative consequences. In a state of apathy, the Bachelor exhibits sluggishness, while in mania, they become overly active, which can lead to rapid exhaustion. Apathy gradually accumulates and intensifies. It's important to note that it's still unclear how balance in "mental metabolism" will be achieved and how exactly apathy and mania manifest in the Bachelor's life.

An interesting observation: kicking trash cans decreases apathy and increases mania. There are no restrictions on this behavior: one can continue kicking trash cans until the Bachelor becomes manically active. The essence of this practice is clear—it's the Bachelor's way of stimulating themselves. However, the mechanics look quite unusual.

You can learn more about some things by pressing a button: fragmentary thoughts of the hero will appear on the screen. This mechanic is also used in the investigation. And it's just interesting to read comments like these from the Bachelor. Screenshot: Pathologic 3: Quarantine / Ice-Pick Lodge

The game demo certainly can't fully capture its capabilities, but it already showcases a wealth of content. The core mechanics are intriguing and promise a wealth of interactions, although it's still unclear how they will work together. Pathologic 2 also featured many different systems that blended harmoniously and complemented each other, so Ice-Pick Lodge has no reason to doubt its potential. We expect the full game to offer an even deeper and more engaging experience.

Sometimes Pathologic 3 becomes like a board game Screenshot: Pathologic 3: Quarantine / Ice-Pick Lodge

The demo version of the game makes an impression Confusion. Players struggle to grasp the mechanics immediately, as the game doesn't clearly explain its rules. Before the game can engage, players must face certain challenges. However, it is precisely this suffering that underlies the essence of "Pathologic," reflecting an important aspect of overcoming death. This theme of overcoming and struggling with difficulties makes the game unique and memorable.
