World Press Photo announced the winners of its 2025 competition on March 27. This year, 42 photographs were selected from 59,320 entries submitted by 3,778 photographers from 141 countries. The World Press Photo Contest annually highlights outstanding achievements in photojournalism and serves as a platform for showcasing significant events and stories from around the world.

This year, the selection of the best photographs was conducted based on a geographic division into six groups: North and Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, West, Central, and South Asia, and Asia-Pacific and Oceania. Within each of these groups, winners were selected in three categories: Individual Photographs, Stories, and Long-Term Projects. This approach allows for a more accurate assessment of the diversity and uniqueness of photographic art in different parts of the world.

These people are driven by a desire for a better life and are willing to overcome dangers to achieve their dreams. The photo project documents their stories, highlighting the human suffering and hope that accompany migration along one of the most dangerous routes in the world.

Many people do not reach their destination. Those who do make it through this journey face a new and difficult challenge: a journey through Central America and Mexico on their way to the United States.

"The House Smells Like Smoke"

"Women's Bodies as Battlegrounds"

Cinzia Cannery is a human rights professional and activist working within the Association Camille Lepage. This organization focuses on the protection of human rights, support for victims of conflict and the promotion of justice. Cinzia is actively involved in projects aimed at raising awareness of human rights violations and providing assistance to victims. Her work includes researching cases of violence, advocating in international forums, and collaborating with other organizations to improve the situation in conflict-affected regions. The Camille Lepage Association continues to draw attention to critical human rights issues, thanks to the efforts of activists like Cinzia Canneri.

In 2017, Cinzia Canneri began documenting the experiences of women fleeing government repression in Eritrea. With the outbreak of war in northern Ethiopia in 2020, she also began documenting the stories of women fleeing armed incursions. Both groups of women face systematic violence, including rape and torture. Social stigma, limited access to healthcare, and difficulties for journalists in obtaining information about what is happening make this topic underreported in the media. The need for more in-depth coverage of these tragedies is becoming increasingly urgent to draw attention to the problems faced by victims of violence in these regions.

This project gives women affected by military conflicts in the region on the border of Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Sudan a chance to tell their stories. The jury notes the significance of this project, highlighting its deep emotional component and attention to the feelings of the participants. It serves as an important tool for raising awareness of the consequences of war and supports women in their quest for recovery and justice.

"Bullets Know No Borders"

Ebrahim Alipour is a name that has become famous in various fields. His achievements and contributions to his field are noteworthy. Ebrahim demonstrates leadership qualities and a passion for innovation, which allows him to stand out among his peers. His experience and knowledge make him a valuable specialist capable of solving complex problems. Importantly, Ebrahim actively shares his experience, which contributes to the development of the community and the advancement of professionalism in his field. His work and projects inspire many, and his pursuit of excellence is a role model.

Kolbari are individuals involved in the illegal transportation of goods from Iraq and Turkey to Iran. Under Western sanctions, the Iranian government imposes bans on the import of many goods in order to protect local producers and prevent the outflow of foreign currency. Among the Kolbari, a significant number are Iranian Kurds who, faced with high unemployment, are looking for ways to earn money. Risking their lives, they cross the border on foot, delivering goods such as household appliances, mobile phones, and clothing. Many of them consider their activities legitimate, as they do not recognize state borders that divide the same people.

The jury noted that the project clearly illustrates the complex consequences of economic sanctions.

"Te Urewera - Living Ancestor of the Tahu People"

The Ngāi Tahu people of the Te Urewera region of New Zealand have successfully preserved their unique culture and identity. In 2014, the New Zealand government granted the Tahu people the right to manage their ancestral lands, taking into account their cultural values. However, the government has recently adopted changes that the Tahu perceive as a rollback of progressive policies aimed at supporting Indigenous peoples.
